These pictures were my grandmother's of the SS Baltic (White Star Line) at sea in May 1929, New York to Liverpool England. She is in the striped top with her husband (Isabella and Roy Elliott - both Scottish but living in New York at the time). Can anyone name the other people? It would be lovely for their ancestors to see the photos I'm sure. I especially like the one with the child and her dolly inside the lifebuoy ring. 新年快乐Saturday 10 February is the start of the Year of the Dragon 🐉 which will be celebrated in China and other parts of Asia. Dragons are charismatic, intelligent, confident, powerful and they are naturally lucky and gifted! In China genealogy records were traditionally kept in a family’s ancestral temple. People kept a family ancestor book called a 家譜/Jiapu where they recorded their ancestors. DNA testing is now also a great too to try to track down the area/town where your Chinese family is from. Many genealogy databases also offer help.

America consular fees were charged during 1906-1952 and seen in passports in the form of a paper stamp. Check any old passports to see you if you have any - sometimes the stamp can be collectible. Here are ones for $1 and $9, June 1923. That would be $163 in stamp fees if it was charged today.
Thinking of starting your family tree? Search through any old documents you might have in the house. You might be lucky enough to find old passports, old letters, and other paper which date and locate your ancestors. This is an employment reference for Roy Eliiott given by a Shipbuilders - Scotts in 1923.
Robert Burns, poet and songwriter is celebrated today. The 1788 digital copy of the original records of Burns and Jean Armour formally records their 'irregular' marriage which had been in place for several years. In Scotland until 1939, you could marry in front of two witnesses creating a more informal consent based marriage not requiring approval of the church.

Using DNA today to help link me to people with whom I share a common ancestor. Great way to help confirm ancestors if paper records are weak. I have been using them for tracing Irish roots. Working on a Lewis ( island in Scotland) family tree today. Everyone spoke Gaelic so need to brush up on Gaelic to English names. Anndra is Andrew, Eoghann is Ewan. Mairead is Margaret. All records in English but sometimes a mix. Wish we had been taught Gaelic in school might have made things easier! I love family trees.

If you have had your DNA tested ( autosomal/cousin test) then this is a fun thing to try. You can compare your DNA to ancient people ( I’m related to three guys found under a bar 5000 years ago in Rathlin Northern Ireland) or join interest groups based on a name or a area.
