Minneapolis residents will hold a rally to celebrate new clean energy home upgrade programs and call on city officials to make them available to all residents by funding the Climate and Equity Plan through the city’s next franchise agreement —” which is entering initial negotiations. By updating the franchise agreement so that the franchise fee is based on the social cost of carbon and increasing it over the next five years, the city will raise a projected $100 million to directly fund retrofits, weatherizations, and electrification for upwards of 10,000 homes a year to implement the Minneapolis Climate and Equity Plan.

Saint Paul Council Leadership, Renters, Landlords, Community Leaders Raise Urgent Need for Tenant Protections
Following today’s vote to end the path of putting a Rent Stabilization policy on the ballot in Minneapolis, the Home to Stay coalition released the following statement:
“We’re incredibly disappointed that this year’s path towards rent stabilization was ended with today’s vote, especially with the way the vote happened. Renters in Minneapolis need their elected officials to act. We’ve heard from people across race, job and zip code who are struggling to find a safe, stable place to call home. Passing a rent stabilization policy would help families across the city facing drastic rent increases every day. When put to the voters in 2021, residents voted in support of passing a policy, and here we are in 2023 seeing the policy not going on the ballot. Renters have waited for too long and are tired of struggling. We know those in power will be happy that their ability to raise rents in any amount was protected again today, but this fight will go on. Today was incredibly frustrating but our coalition won’t stop fighting until we win a policy that keeps Minneapolis families in our homes and our city truly becomes a place where all of our families can thrive.”

Representing hundreds of residents who will participate in the caucuses across the city as a part of the organizing efforts of Home to Stay Minneapolis and its organizational members, speakers will highlight the urgent need for the Minneapolis City Council to create a rent stabilization policy with a 3% cap that reflects the will of voters and the Minneapolis Rent Stabilization Workgroup.
Rent stabilization will be a major priority during this year’s ward caucuses, with constituents asking candidates to commit publicly to putting a strong policy on the November 2023 ballot.
