Crazy end of the year with contest wins almost every weekend! 🥇
Several surfers that I’ve been helping this year, got 8 victories in surf contests in the last 2 months. 🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆
“Work pays off!” I always say, but sometimes it takes a while to be true.
The most important thing is never quit and keep giving your best every day. ⚡️
Congrats to:ochoa
hinata (3x)!
It’s very hard to win a contest and doesn’t happen everyday, so this wins made my day every single time. 🙌
I want to say thank YOU to you guys for giving so much of you to achieve this moments. 🙏
And remember,
Today is another day to get back to zero and start all over again!!!
Let’s Go! 🚀
This is just the beginning, keep grinding everyday to reach your goals in 2024. 📈

Girls Camp started here in Peniche.
Getting ready for the QS season starting next month.
Stoked to have this good souls next to me. 🧡
Focusing on getting higher scores and win heats.
Goals, Mindset and Approach. 🏆
Lets GO Girls!!! 💪🏾
In El Salvador to coach on the ISA World Surfing Games 2023. Starting today 31st May.
More than 300 athletes from 63 countries are competing here to get a spot in the Olympic Games 2024.
Competing here is specially challenging because of the high temperatures, high humidity and also the constant changing conditions of the waves.
Another important factor is the 20 minute heats on main rounds and 15 minute heats in repechage rounds.
We are ready!
Let’s Go!!! 💪🏾
Ariane Ochoa is qualified for the Challenger Series 2023, that start next week in Australia by making the Top 5 WSL Europe. 💥
It’s been a long road but it’s the 3rd year in a row in the Challenger Series for Ariane. 💪🏾
With ups and downs on your way, you always kept that smile in your face. 🙂
I am proud of your commitment, love and trust on the process. 🙌
Keep smiling and enjoying it. ⚔️
Let’s GO!!! 🔥🚀
30 years of Surfing. 🌍
It’s our time to teach and pass the values of surfing to the new generation of surfers.
Another step up in Morocco 🇲🇦.
Another no swell WSL contest…
QS3000 in Anchor Point, Morocco.
We did the best we could but nothing good came out of this one.
From my 4 surfers, one got injured before the event and 3 lost in the first heat. 😡
They were all surfing some of their sharpest surf I have seen. But like I always say this is not about surfing. ⚔️
This is competition and if you are not smart in 25 minutes, you go home. 🛴
Time to keep working and learn from the mistakes. 📝
Besides this, I was surrounded by great people that made this trip special. Thanks guys for the good vibes. ❤️
Good People have Good Karma!!
Next one WSL QS3K/1K Caparica.
Let’s GO!!! 🚀
0-3
Great team work in our last competitions in Canary Islands. 🌴
It was the last 2 stops for the national spanish league.
and .ochoa came to this events with defined goals and the desire to win. 🥇
In the end we didn’t bring the 1st place home but we refined our competition routines and training methods. 📝
Want to congratulate them for their team spirit, work discipline and never giving up until the last second. 👏
Ariane was on the title fight until the last second of the last heat, ending #2 in the ranking 2022.
Leticia finished #10 overall.
It was not the results we wanted but lots of lessons learned and they become stronger with this 2 good competitions. 💪🏾
In 2023 we promise to go back to fight for the Spanish National Title. 🏆
It was great to see the support you give to each other! 👌
So proud of you girls!!! 🙌
For 15 months I have been working with a basque government project for Olympic sport as coach and technical director.
It was a good experience, moving to Bilbao and living in a high performance center like Lezama, the headquarters of Athletic Club.
Working on a daily basis with other sport professionals, coaches, personal trainers, physios, doctors and all kinds of people involved in high performance sports was amazing and very demanding.
I had a team of great surfers, with the goal to make them better and more prepared for the goal of the olympic games, Paris 2024.
Unfortunately the basque government decided to pause the project and all this is over now. So I had to move on. Nevertheless I learned a lot and I am grateful for this opportunity.
Want to thank you all that have been part of this journey, specially Jatyr, Meri, Aritz and Olatz. 💙
To all the athletes that sweated so much for this jersey, remember: when one door closes another one opens, keep grinding, keep going, hasta la victoria! ❤️
The first event of 2022 is the QS3000 in Netanya, Israel.
Happy to be back here after 3 years and that it is a men and women event, both with equal 3000 points.
Let’s hope for some good waves 🤞
After a cold pre-season in the basque country, we have some of the coldest days ever here in March. 🥶🥶🥶
Hope to see some of my local friends on the beach again. 🤙
Big shout to for taking care of my team. 🙏
What a great week in the WSL Ericeira Challenger Series!
Congrats .ochoa for this amazing result! 🥉This 3rd place feels like gold.🏆
You were ripping!!! 🔥💥🚀
Also a word to:
for her first challenger, what a great performance of surfing. 👏 vitoria for all the commitment this week. 💪

A big shout to and all the professionals involved that made this possible, with you all we couldn’t achieve this. 💙
Congrats to .qs for the commitment and decisions to make the contest in the biggest days, that made it so much better and interesting for everyone participating and watching.
Great Show!!! 🔟👌
Some of the best waves I have seen in Ribeira d'ilhas in contests in the last 25 years, Amazing!! 🙌
A big Hug to my brother that is always in our hearts when we are in competition.
Also wish and better luck in the next event. Good performances that were overcame in the last minute of their heats. Keep up the good work. ✌
Happy and proud for all we achieved in Pantin. 🙂

Thanks to for all the support and .events for this week.
Great way to finish the WSL 20/21 season.
Looking forward to start 21/22 sesson soon.
The truth! Always. This is the deal with my athletes.🤝
If you are looking for a pat on the back, I am not that guy...sorry to say. 🙂
But if you are committed to work and improve your surfing, let's go all the way, follow me! 💥🚀
It's a choice.
Are you ready for the truth?
Red or Blue? 🔴🔵
Scoring surfing is hard, it takes a long time and experience to get to a high level.
What is forgotten sometimes is that it takes a good team to do a good job, one good judge is not enough.
Who ever thinks different is not seeing the entire picture.
CR7 can't play alone, it takes another 10 players, and so is judging, it's a team job.
Is making 20 years I started this journey, judging at professional contests.
Next weekend I go back to a classic and one of my favorite places, Figueira da Foz, to judge the open liga meo event.
What a mythical place with Nice People, Good Waves and Great Food!
Let's Go!!!

An unplanned plan 🅱️ that happened to me. ⏱
Arrived to the beach the other day for a private coaching session and when I was instructing my athlete about the tactical goals and time of the session, I realised I forgot my watch at home.
I just forgot it...my classic tidal watch that I use all day everyday... 😑 well not today.
First thing that came to my mind was the countless amount of times I told my surfers that this piece of gear is fundamental to an athlete that wants to do a session with me.
And now here I am doing the same...🤦♂️
2 seconds after I remembered 💡 that because this happens so often, I bought a couple of cheap casio water resistant watches just in case someone forgets, and one is still in my backpack.
So my designed plan B for surfers became my plan A that day. 🤙
Felt Lucky, but as we say here in Portugal: “a forewarned man is worth two men”. Probably this doesn’t make much sense in english but I think you get my point. 😁😀😎
❓One question for you:
Where is your watch? Do you use one in all your surf sessions?
❌ A competitor surfer without a watch is like a boat without a compass. 🧭
You should always use one and have a old one in your backpack too. 😉
More on how to properly compete in surfing coming soon here, stay tuned.
How is it like to Judge Surfing?
Got this question a lot in the last 20 years during my judging career.
Here I show a small 1 minute sample of a day judging in a surf contest.
Normally it is 20 or 25 minutes like that each heat.
Watching, Compare, Score and Type.
You need a lot of Focus and Memory.
So we get some breaks to refocus, each 3 heats, you get a 1 heat break.
Normally a working day it’s 8 hours, but the majority of days in contests go up to 10 or 11 hours.
It’s not uncommon to arrive at the tower before sunrise and leave at sunset.
My record is 14 hours and 7 minutes judging day, for a total of 40 heats on a Pro Junior event in Sopelana on July 2016.
Most surfing contests are between 2 days up to 6 days, depending on the number of competitors that sign up.
I have been doing around 30 contests per year since I started professionally.
Meaning I should have done around 600 contests, sometimes I get to judge 1000 waves in a contest and that is crazy because at the end of a contest we remember most waves.
Over 500.000 waves scored in my life!
That’s lots and lots of comparisons!!!
Or over 20.000 hours judging if you make the math.
Read in a book that for you to master something in life, like really being one of the best, you need to do that thing for 10.000 hours.
Well seems like I doubled that number already, does that make me a double master? 2x Master Judge! lol
If you want to know more about how judging works or learn more about how to make points in surfing comps, DM me or comment below. I will be happy to help.
This 5 decisions turn a heat win into a loss. 💥
Have seen this poor decisions happen in contests several times. 🤞
1: Not knowing the time duration established for the heats and leaving the water earlier, before the heat finishes. 😴
2: Not looking back to see if another surfer is surfing, dropping in and making an interference. 🏄♂️🏄♀️
3: taking as many waves as possible in a battery. 😡
4: catching waves without scoring potential. 😑
5: Staying inside to catch the more frequent but smaller waves. 🤔
Let's learn from then and remember it, save this post for future reading before a contest. 👇
New season, new goal: 2021 Championship. 🏆
When I started doing my internship for the portuguese federation Level 2 Surf Coach in Calili surf school, I was not expecting this to happen. 🙂
Calili asked me to coach him for the SUP Wave National Championship, his goal was to improve his performance and the goal/idea I introduced was to win the next heat.
Our focus in practice was to make high scores and win heats.
Just that.
The result?
Runner-Up🥈And at a distance of finishing a turn from probably being the champion.
Lesson learned? Don’t fall on your turns!!!
😆😁😀
Now seriously, this was an amazing result but especially a great performance from an “underdog”, winning all his heats to the Final.
The formula: Goal, Work & Mindset.
But don’t you think this was an easy one.
Calili is a humble fighter, always ready to work on his fitness and train a lot. 💪
Mentally he will “eat you heat for breakfast” :) when competing. ⚡
(I think this is his best characteristic).
Above all I was really proud and pleased to work with such an athlete, that is always ready to listen, discuss ideas, loves challenges, and doing the work.
But more importantly stoked for the friendship I did with one of the best persons I ever knew. You have a heart of Gold 💛 my friend, keep being like that!
I challenge you to this year goal: 2021 Champion. 🥇

Backside Top turn in 10 frames. ✌
This is how I see separate this turn in moments.
But only 3 are on the top of the wave, the "wanga" moment. ⚡
Why?
Because you won't have a proper turn without a beginning, middle and an end.
The preparation of the turn is essential and the way you exit is crucial. 💡
If you don't start good, you won't do good and definitely finish bad.
In the last 20 years all I did was watching, watching, watching. All the details matter.
Then compare, compare, compare.
And finally Scoring.
Do you want to get higher scores in competitions? 🥇
Stay focused on my feed, more coming the next days.
Let me know in the comments or DM which frame/moment is, in your opinion, the most important and why.
Last Sunday got a the chance to go out with some of the boys to surf one of my favorite places. A very special spot.
And what a surf session and experience!
Pushing the limits and surf bigger waves makes me feel more alive.
Someone once said:
"The best things in life are on the other side of fear."
This one we won't forget it soon.
Some of the more beautiful waves I saw in 2020.
A big shout to my friends out there that day!
RESPECT.
Can't wait for the next swell!!!
Thanks for being there to picture it:
Legends never die.
Aitor was one of my mentors when I decided to judge surfing professionally. He was the European head judge on former ASP now WSL. I learned a lot from him and I will never forget it.
People come and go in your life, but some of them always receive you with a smile and open arms.
He owns the best technical surf shop in Bilbao area. Where he is a legend and a reference to many people that come to him for advice on surfing.
If you come to Basque Country and need a board or gear, this is the place to go for:
Eskerrik Asko Aitor!!!
Roots & Honor.
What's in it for you?!
Life gives and life takes, but in the end is all about your choices after each moment.
Your choices will make who you are.
Stop the BS and be yourself!
