Protecting the dignity of vulnerable communities by developing sustainable economic and agricultural solutions, providing a source of income, access to healthy food sources and mitigating climate change
Join us for an in-depth look at one of the cornerstones of our agricultural innovation. The Green Belt, consisting of meticulously selected rows of trees, serves as a natural fortress against the challenging Iraqi climate. These trees, chosen for their exceptional resilience to both salt and heat, play a crucial role in safeguarding the farm from harsh winds while providing a verdant canopy for the entire agricultural expanse π³
Watch as our board member showcases the Responsive Drip Irrigation (RDI) system working under the soil, a cornerstone of our regenerative approach. When you dig under the surface layer of soil, you can clearly see its transformation from compacted clay to a more receptive texture. Observing the subtle shift in color along the RDI tape line, is a good sign that crucial moisture is present. While it's not a flood of water, it's exactly what our strong, heat-tolerant tree needs to grow and thrive π¦
Here, we're not just growing crops, we're pioneering a sustainable agricultural model that can thrive in even the most challenging conditions. The Iraq Pilot Farm is more than just a farm; it's a beacon of hope for sustainable agriculture in challenging environments. It embodies our dedication to regenerative practices, where each element - from the trees in the Green Belt to the RDI system - plays a crucial role in revitalizing the land and fostering a more sustainable, nourished future. Stay tuned for deeper insights into the innovative systems propelling our success. Together, we're forging a path towards thriving, regenerative agriculture models to become the mainstream method of farming πΎ
πΏ UPDATE: Here are some of our recent achievements at .foundation :
π± We are excited to share that we are expanding our impact by building a third regenerative farm to provide even more fresh produce to the animal residents. With this new farm, we'll be able to grow a wider variety of produce and better meet the animals' needs.
πͺ To strengthen the soil structure at the new farm, we planted vetiver (chrysopogon zizanioides) around the perimeter. It's an amazing plant that helps prevent landslides due to its extensive root structure.
πΎ Bed shaping has begun with 28 beds planned for Farm Three!
π» Our team is working hard with volunteers/interns to move compost to where it's needed on the second farm. All to provide the freshest and healthiest produce to the animal residents of the foundation!
π Stay tuned for more updates and photos of our regenerative farm at Cikananga Wildlife Center, which we'll be sharing throughout the week. Your support helps us create sustainable, healthy food systems for the animals they care for at .foundation β₯οΈ
If you'd like to join us in our mission and help us continue to provide nutritious food for the animals, you can help by donating to our GoFundMe linked in our stories and highlights. Every little bit counts, and your contribution will directly support the growth and maintenance of our regenerative farms. Let's work together to make a difference in the lives of these animals and the planet we all share. ππΎ

Regenerative agriculture encompasses a wide variety of innovative farming techniques with a focus on protecting the ecosystem and restoring soil health at the forefront πͺ
This holistic approach to farming uses practices like cover cropping, crop rotation, and minimal tillage to rebuild soil health and fertility, while also promoting biodiversity and reducing erosion. By prioritizing the health of the land, regenerative agriculture has the potential to combat climate change by sequestering carbon in the soil, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and enhancing the resilience of farming communities π

The intense global attention on carbon emissions steers us away from other critical elements of sustainability.
Truly sustainable and regenerative production needs to consider many different factors.
Soil microbiomes, human rights, water cycles and the health of ecosystems are only a few of the many elements necessary to obtain sustainable, regenerative production.
At Enduring Harvest we strive to implement as many of these elements as possible across multiple projects around the globe.

Human stress on our planets most precious resource, fresh water π§ has left farmers, families, and entire communities extremely vulnerable. This has been caused by deforestation, industrial agriculture, careless wildfires, and poor irrigation practicesπ°
1.4 billion inhabitants occupy 11.9M KmΒ² in the highest risk desertification zones π, and they remain in desperate need of mitigating technologies that can sustain burgeoning populations, especially in developing nations. (United Nations, 2022)
At Enduring Harvest, we use the most water-efficient method of irrigation to date, Responsive Drip Irrigation. RDI reads the chemical signals sent by the plantβs roots, called exudates, and delivers water only when requested, making it a truly plant-responsive and highly efficient system. RDI allows us to produce high-quality crops while conserving the natural resources in the regions where we develop our regenerative farm projects π±

Here is some behind the scenes footage of our Pilot farm project in the southern Province of Samawah, Iraq.
This video below shows our dedicated farm managers securely planting our Date Palms and testing the irrigation systems.
The land in this region has been seriously degraded, which has resulted in harsh conditions and extreme poverty for the community.
This project was created to restore the land, harvest fresh produce and create income earning opportunities for the local community.
We plan to improve the conditions of this region starting with our 20-acre regenerative farm. This farm will act as blueprint for what we are hoping to replicate in other developing nations.

What exactly is desertification?
Desertification is the process of fertile land transforming into desert typically as a result of deforestation, drought or improper agriculture practices.
This will problem will continue to happen rapidly if wide-scale changes are not made.
We are directly combating desertification through our regenerative agriculture practices.
Click the link below to read our informative article titled βIssues with Irrigationβ written by Chris Marinaccio that breaks down current issues causing desertification and details what we are doing to combat them through our ethical irrigation practices!

What is a microbiome?
Trending in the health and wellness space, a microbiome is simply a community of microorganisms living together in a particular habitat.
"Habitat" can be defined as many things.
Parts of the human body, like your skin, gut and mouth, all have different microbiomes. Similarly, different parts of plants and soil have individual microbiomes.
While vastly diverse, plant and soil microbiomes refer to the communities of fungi, bacteria and other microorganisms that are crucial to healthy soil.
This great graphic by Meghana bhardwaj Kaul explains the differences in each plant and soil microbiome.
Desertification is one of the most urgent issues humanity is facing.
Drylands and manmade deserts are expanding rapidly, accelerating the warming of our planet.

Irrigation has been a vital part of agriculture for thousands of years.
Many different types of irrigation have been used since humans first introduced the concept in regions that could not sustain crop growth through natural precipitation patterns.
As the human population expanded over generations, more irrigation was needed to keep up with food production.
With the higher demand for irrigation, more water is pulled from natural resources causing variety a serious environmental impacts.
Check out our βIssues with Irrigationβ article below written by Christopher Marinaccio to better understand what methods of irrigation are harmful to the environment and how those negative impacts can be mitigated.
