Day 8 Maranello to Pisa. I was able to redirect what I thought was going to be a hot and flat route to one that was still hot but with lots of elevation changes through the Tuscan landscape. Day 8 turned out to be a beautiful ride offering the ability to checkout Pisa upon our arrival.

Day 7 Venice to Maranello Hot flat ride today through farmland ending in Maranello which on the fringe of Tuscany and its rolling hills. Toured the Ferrari museum in Maranello. Leaning Tower of Piza tomorrow 🤠

Day 6 Bled to Venice, Italy. The ride for the first half of the day traveling through Slovenia was epic riding and scenery. The second half in Italy, hot and flat. The next 3 days making our way back Milan are expected to be flat and hot which was required to hit some of the cultural/tourist spots I’ve not experienced on previous trips.

Day 5 Bled, Slovenia. We spent a day in Bled and off the bike. We enjoyed boating and getting around the town. Our hotel had a stunning view of Lake Bled, the island and castle on opposite side of the lake. Great food and wine was enjoyed.

Day 4, Millstatt, Austria to Lake Bled Slovenia. Today’s ride was very beautiful. We rode to the top of Vrsic Pass in the Julian Alps. Halfway up we got into drizzling rain. Normally, not an issue with classic European switchbacks. However, the turns of the switchback at higher elevation was paved with cobblestones which have been polished over from traffic. This made the turns a bit sketchy with the addition of fresh drizzle. The people of Slovenia are delightful. Beautiful country. Lake Bled is a beautiful setting and a favorite tourist locations for Slovenians.

Davy 3 Cortina, Italy to Millstatt, Austria. Gorgeous ride through the Alps. Staying on Lake Millstaat was beautiful.

Day 2 with my beautiful bride. Torbole, Italy to Cortina. Had a great time playing on many of our favorite passes in the Dolomites. Temperate weather with light rain over last hour of day. Still having troubles trying to get credit/debit cards to work in self service fuel pumps.

Day 1, 20 year anniversary trip with my fine wife Mary. In reflection of our honeymoon and 10 year trip we are doing a trip from Italy to Austria to Slovenia and back. Yesterday was Milan to Torbole Italy located at the very northern tip of lake Garda. Heading deep into the Dolomites today.

Based on rider interest, motowayz has expanded its Foundational & Intermediate ADV / Dual-Sport Adventure Training Camp. This event will be held at Kennedy Creek Resort https://www.kennedycreekresort.net/ nestled the beautiful north Georgia Appalachian Mountains. Join us to have fun and experience expert off-road motorcycle training to hone your skills to help you ride more effectively, efficiently, and safely.

Dates: Thursday Evening, August 1st – 4th, 2024

Availability: Registration on first come, first serve.

Introduction & The Curriculum
This course is for experienced motorcyclists who have on-road experience on an ADV (adventure) dual-sport motorcycle. For the purposes of this course, an experienced rider is one who has basic skills, is a current rider, and possess a current motorcycle license or endorsement with insurance. Riders will need to use their own street-legal ADV bike in the course. Low traction off-pavement riding requires a uniquely different approach to riding over high traction, paved environments. The overall aim is to provide an enjoyable learning experience while transferring the fundamental knowledge and skills for riding ADVs on unpaved surfaces.

Motorcycles
This course is for two-wheel, single-track adventure type motorcycles, which are referred to as adventure/ADV & dual-sport motorcycles which riders will bring to the event. ADVs are street-legal motorcycle designed for long-distance highway riding that include features for off-pavement riding. Motorcycles must have sufficient off-pavement capabilities for the course. Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) street-legal dual-sort motorcycles are allowed in the course. At a minimum the ADV must have tires appropriate for off-pavement surfaces and adequate suspension to cross over a 6”X6” obstacle. Most standard ADV / dual-sport / scrambler motorcycles are appropriate. Conversion or modified motorcycles are not suitable. Motorcycles with tires designed solely for on-pavement operation are not suitable.

Pre-requisites:
• Must be 16 years old with current motorcycle permit/license and proof of insurance.
• Need to bring an your ADV/Dual-Sport motorcycle that meets the requirements above under “Motorcycles”. A personal motorcycle is preferred, but a borrowed ADV is permissible with written proof of permission by the owner and insurance coverage.
• ADV motorcycle needs to have ADV centric tires (preferably at least 50/50) and not tires 100% for street.
• The course is for licensed riders who own an adventure bike (ADV) and have experience with it on the street. No experience riding off-pavement is required.
• Riders should be familiar with the owner's manual and bring it with them.
• Riders are encouraged to bring extra brake and clutch levers in case of breakage. Heavy duty, hand grip brush guards are highly encouraged.
• Riders are to ensure familiarity with their ADV's controls and adjustments that are possible.
• Rider’s should know how to turn on & off ABS, traction control and know how select different ride modes where applicable.
• Bring your Off-highway Motorcycle (OHM) and owner’s manual for your OHM.
• The desire to learn and have a blast!

• How to inspect the motorcycle before riding
• Proper position of motorcycle controls for your body
• Proper sitting and standing body positions
• Beside learning new skills students also discuss responsible riding practices including risk management. • Accelerating & braking
• Turning & counterweighting
• Rear wheel steering
• Riding narrow ruts
• Attacking obstacles
• Front wheel skid recovery
• Ascending / descending hills
• U-turns & traversing hills
• Swerving and emergency stops
• Adventure preparation

Gear Requirements
• Must bring DOT approved helmet.
• Must bring motorcycle googles or face shield.
• Must bring long sleeve shirt.
• Must bring long pants.
• Must bring over the ankle boots.
• Must bring over the finger gloves that offer dexterity.

• Other examples of gear highly suggested but not required: Motocross style boots, hard elbow pads, hard knee/shin pads, hydration pack, chest protector, kidney belt.
• It is highly suggested rider dress in layers as we get very active on the bike.

Testing:
There is no written test associated with this course. The elements of the course are “building block” in nature where earlier skills learned and demonstrated will be required for more advanced skills later in the course. We will spend plenty of time and instruction to assist riders to accomplish and demonstrate the needed skills before progressing. However, there may be a case where riders are unable to demonstrate required skills. In those cases, we’ll counsel those students if it’s appropriate for them to proceed.

Your entire class time is spent on the range with plenty of hand-on instruction and real
world riding situations.

We had a great day of motowayz ADV training yesterday at Irom Mountain Off Road Resort. Really fun group and all riders demonstrated great improvements throughout Saturday.

It’s a wrap. Our 2024 Spring MotoQuest American Southwest Tour was a success. The trip provided a great deal of scenic and weather diversity. We finished with a group of happy and improved riders. Day 5 of MotoQuest’s American Southwest Adventure. Had a great day playing around the Moab area. We took our riders to Canyonlands, Deadhorse Point (to Karen’s suggestion) and took our dirt oriented riders up and down Shafer Trail. Very windy day played havoc with our riders.

Our MotoQuest American Southwest Adventure has landed us in Moab for two nights. We’ve spent previous nights in Cortez,CO and Williams, AZ. All riders doing great. Made some time to explore Moki Dugway and Valley of the Gods which are sections of the Utah Backcountry Discovery Routes.

Duration: This is a day and a half of closed course training with Day 1 and the morning of Day 2 focused on range work and new skill development. I hope this message finds you well! I’ve been requested to co-guide this year’s MotoQuest American Southwest Adventure over October 22nd through October 31st. I will be joined by Dan Patino who has been guiding MotoQuest since its early beginning. Both Dan and I have guided this tour many times and it is one of our favorites. We’d love to have you along.

This experience is based primarily on pavement with a start and end point in Las Vegas, NV. This adventure loops through Nevada, Colorado, Utah and New Mexico. The ride offers stunning vistas throughout the trip and diverse American history.

On our free day in Moab, based upon the rider’s desires and bikes they have chosen, we may do an off-road day outside of Moab as there is a ton of interesting things to explore off-pavement.

The American Southwest Adventure takes us through many epic national parks. The following are a few examples of areas we’ll be riding through on the trip: historic mining town of Oatman on Route 66, Grand Canyon, Monument Valley, Mexican Hat, Canyonlands Nat’l Park, Capitol Reef Nat’l Park, Bryce Canyon & Zion National Park.

Coming out of the 2 mile tunnel in Whittier. Longest tunnel in North America. A couple of our riders fished the Copper River on our day off, beautiful salmon on the grill at the hotel.

Weather was beautiful all week! Gorgeous scenic street riding and got some off road time in as well!

Caught a ski plan flight up and landed on Ruth Glacier on Mt. Denali to take a break off the bikes. Absolutely stunning!
