The Algoma Sikh Association has partnered with Khalsa Aid Canada to bring Chardi Kala (high spirits) & relief to the vulnerable members of our Soo community.

It is an absolute honour to be doing this seva (selfless service) of supporting our local food banks & community.

The Algoma University Students' Union food bank is available for AlgomaU students 1:00PM to 4:00PM Monday to Friday.

The Sault College Students' Union food bank is available for Sault College students Wednesday & Friday 11:00AM to 2:00PM.

The Sault Ste. Marie Soup Kitchen Community Centre is available to the public & is providing free meals at 12:00PM each weekday.

If you are a senior, a vulnerable individual or engaging in self-isolation, & do not have the means to go to the grocers, feel free to contact us for grocery deliveries & aid.

We are working hard to live up to the timeless words of our Guru:

Fighting anxiety and isolation the Sikh way: service (RNS) — Hundreds of Sikh communities are risking their lives to serve those affected by COVID-19, based on their tradition of seva.

🚨*CALL TO ACTION*🚨

As you already know, ISIS has attacked a Gurdwara in Kabul, killing over 24 Sikhs. They even detonated a bomb near the cremation site.

This is unacceptable, and now is the time to push our federal MPs once again to bring our Sikh brothers and sisters to safety. Enough is enough, no more delays. More Sikhs will die in Afghanistan if we do not act now.

What are our asks? How can you help?

*1* Push the Canadian government for *direct sponsorship* program from Afghanistan for the local Sikh and Hindu communities still there (similar to the program provided to Syrians).

*2* Push the Canadian government for *expedited processing* of files for the approximately 44 already privately sponsored Afghan Sikh and Hindu families. Email your local MP and MPs from our curated list. More information here: http://www.worldsikh.org/save_afghan_sikhs

It was our pleasure to come together this International Women's Day 2020 to bring the One Billion Rising global campaign to a local level here in the Soo through the World Sikh Organization of Canada (WSO) & the Algoma Sikh Association.

One Billion Rising is a global campaign which aims to end r**e and sexual violence against women. As Angelina Napolitano, a resident of Sault Ste. Marie, was the first woman in Canada to use the battered woman defense on a charge of the murder of her abusive husband, the local Sikh community found it fitting to acknowledge the suffrage of victims of domestic abuse and their perseverance throughout the years. We must keep the memory of Napolitano & remember our past so we may not repeat it.

Last month, our founder had the opportunity to attended the 25th Annual Youth Assembly as a delegate representing Canada at the United Nations Headquarters in New York City. They were able to meet with many driven individual's from all parts of the world & learn about the Blue Heart campaign by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime. The Blue Heart campaign is global awareness raising initiative to fight human trafficking and its impact on society. With our historical local issues, as a boarder city, with fighting human trafficking & our nationwide issue of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG), it is important we support the vulnerable members of our community.
