“Those who are able to inspire will create a following of people—supporters, voters, customers, workers—who act for the good of the whole not because they have to, but because they want to.”

“Great leaders, in contrast, are able to inspire people to act. Those who are able to inspire give people a sense of purpose or belonging that has little to do with any external incentive or benefit to be gained.”

“All we have is the undying belief of this one person of a world that exists in the future and his ability to communicate it in a way that lets us imagine it as clearly. All leaders must have two things: they must have a vision of the world that does not exist and they must have the ability to communicate it.”

“It is a prerequisite, then, for someone to trust the culture in which they work to share the values and beliefs of that culture. Without it, that employee, for example, is simply a bad fit and likely to work only for self-gain without consideration for the greater good.”

“Real innovation changes the course of industries or even society. The light bulb, the microwave oven, the fax machine, iTunes. These are true innovations that changed how we conduct business, altered how we live our lives, and, in the case of iTunes, challenged an industry to completely reevaluate its business model. Adding a camera to a mobile phone, for example, is not an innovation—a great feature, for sure, but not industry-altering.”

Mottley Address Thousands at BLP “MARCH OF DISGUST” - John King - BLP Candidate

“Oye Oye Oye Something’s Happening” was the song to which Opposition leader Mia Mottley was ushered on stage as she walked to the podium to address the thousands who on Saturday braved the sun to march through Bridgetown and later braved the rain, to stay at Jubilee Gardens and listen to a wealth of speakers address them as to why “the Freundel Stuart administration has to go.”

The Inconveniences of Life - John King - BLP Candidate

Let me state from the beginning, I do not believe that there are any inconveniences where life and living is concerned.

There is only ‘what is’ and ‘what is not’.

For example, the pot-hole problem currently causing distress and frustration on our roads cannot be simply seen as an inconvenience.

It is a symptom of a lack of responsibility, a hallmark of the DLP administration.

After this administration raised road tax, put measures in place to increase compliance {threats of prosecution and penalties, increased spot checks by police and traffic wardens etc} while citizens grapple with the worst ‘recession’ since the twentieth century, it is most unfortunate that absolutely nothing has been done to maintain the same roads upon which we have to travel.

Though for some of us the ridiculous cost of vehicles and parts is puzzling, one could at least consider reducing all taxes associated with the purchase of parts when vehicles are subject to severe wear and tear ravages in light of the poor conditions of our roads.

The Right to Vote - John King - BLP Candidate

With general elections very much on the lips of a growing number of Barbadians, I consider it fitting at this time to stress the point that having the right to vote is a staple of democratic ideology, and should not be taken lightly because the road to this ‘freedom’ to choose one’s government was paved by the sweat, tears and blood of forward thinking men and women who understood true democracy. It is therefore somewhat unfortunate to learn of deceitful and destructive accusations of ‘vote buying’ associated with previous general elections in Barbados and other Caricom member states.

Prevention Better than Cure - John King - BLP Candidate

Crime is a barometer by which we can assess the progress of a society.

The more criminal a society becomes the closer it gets to self destruction.

Man can only flourish and prosper when criminality is at somewhat controllable levels.

Rampant crime may also be considered a form of insanity, for neither the victims nor perpetrators in anyway benefit from these acts.

In today’s world crime has become a huge business and is devastating communities, while enriching a few.

Let me break it down. When faced with consistently high levels of crime, citizens must invest in protection of some sort for safety of self and property.

Stun guns, pepper spray, alarm systems, burglar bars, fencing, walls, Security cameras are hot commodities in this environment. Lethal weapons legal or illegal are also in high demand for the criminal, Law enforcement and public.

Then there is the need to build more modern and larger facilities to accommodate the increasing number of persons sentenced to prison.

Add to this the need for more police officers and stations and equipment.

Then prepare for additional courts, magistrates, lawyers, court clerks, administration personnel, probation officers and offices etc. Are you beginning to get the picture?

No More Excuses - John King - BLP Candidate

All across the country Barbadians have grown tired of excuses for tardiness and incompetence.

One disaster after another is met with lame excuses, blame games and way too often, a total disregard for the pain and suffering of the masses.

There are those, blinded by political allegiance who suggest, that Bajans love complaining.

Also there is the cry of political motivation whenever one has to express dissatisfaction with the way the present administration has handled a number of pressing issues.

I find it alarming that in 2016, the general concerns of a nation are relegated to the realm of “complaining for complaining sake”

Am I to believe that the problems with garbage collection, sewage leaks, lack of water, poor transportation, deplorable roads, violent crimes, unemployment, etc are figments of mass delusion?

Or is there something that I am missing, just like many Barbadians?

The Haves and the Have Nots - John King - BLP Candidate

It’s a pity that society as we know it, continues to promote scarcity as a plausible reason for the lack of food and shelter amongst the poorest and most vulnerable across the globe.

Scarcity touches every sphere of life and creates havoc where its head is raised.

There is a school of thought for example that suggests, technology is responsible for the lack of jobs available to humans. Automatic Teller Machines and robots are said to be more efficient and less problematic than people within the work environment.

Fewer sick days and strikes are sighted as two reasons given to support the ever increasing use of automation.

Brilliant, except when one examines the ramifications of this global phenomenon.

Since the acquisition of wealth appears to be the catalyst behind automation, let’s see where money is presently being lost.

True Independence - John King - BLP Candidate

The dust has settled, on a lukewarm fiftieth independence celebration.

A major achievement for a small island state, when one considers that Caribbean territories such as the Dutch islands of St Marteen, Aruba, Curacao and Bonaire, French islands Martinique and Guadeloupe the British Virgin Islands, Grand Cayman, Bermuda as well as Puerto Rico and the U.S Virgin Islands all remain colonies today!

Independence is not just an enactment signed on paper, but must be a state of being expressed through thought and deed.

With the aforementioned statement as my understanding of the concept of independence, one should not be surprised if I question the relevance of our annual celebration.

There are a number of issues I wish to raise which may spark discussion among readers.

Where Do We Go From Here - John King - BLP Candidate

As we reflect on the past year, those of us who continue to find living a struggle under the weight of a dismal performance by a Democratic Labour Party (DLP) government, may very well wonder how much more can we or do we have to bare.

Every target set by the present administration by their own admission, has failed to be reached with pitiful excuses, indeed, evidenced by the DLP’S new slogan “Don’t blame me!”

A once proud people have been stripped of their dignity, pride and confidence. What is most frightening as one travels across the country is that many persons are becoming comfortable with our poor standard of representation and are of the belief that there is no better alternative.

Voter apathy is a real concern for the next general election and if not addressed will result in the lowest voter participation ever witnessed in our history.

“Just how did we get here?”

Is Barbados IMF Bound? - John King - BLP Candidate

Opposition Leader Mia Mottley has warned that Guyana’s decision to temporarily suspend trade in Barbados Dollars might be a sign that the island is headed to the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Last Thursday, the Central Bank of Guyana announced the move, saying the amount of Barbados currency on the Guyana market had jumped from $8 Million in 2014 to $13 Million as at last week. The Bank was particularly concerned about the high volume of Barbados dollars being traded in Georgetown for US currency.

Addressing a Barbados Labour Party (BLP) rally at Top Rock, Christ Church Sunday night, Mottley cautioned that this shelving of the Barbados currency could be a prelude to an IMF intervention.

“The Guyanese stopped taking our currency in 1991, just before Barbados and Sandiford under the Dems (Democratic Labour Party) went to the IMF.” She said while reminding supporters of the mass protests that eventually led to the fall of the Erskine Sandiford (now Sir Lloyd) government in 1994.

[UPDATED] Bajans shall not be used as Surinamese River Water "Scapegoats" - John King - BLP Candidate

{Update 16 Dec, 2016] That barge with the Suriname river water, which was destined for Barbados, was diverted to Curacao. The people of Barbados will not be used as “guinea pigs” after all. But our Minister with responsibility for Water Resource Management, Dr. Estwick, is still to tell us exactly what was contained in that Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that was signed, on behalf of the people of Barbados, once again behind their backs “in the dead of night” with Amazon Resources, the Dutch-Suriname company, ever since April, 2015. The people on whose behalf you act, are still waiting to hear from you Dr. Estwick, even as that water-laden barge now makes its way to Curacao.

Bajans shall not be used as Surinamese River Water "Scapegoats" - John King - BLP Candidate

Now that the euphoria of the 50th Anniversary of Independence Celebrations is behind us, we must, as a people, be mindful of the disturbing fact that a large test shipment of Suriname river water arrived at the Bridgetown Port about five (5) days before Independence Day on November 30th.

As the Barbados Labour Party’s candidate for St. Philip West in the up-coming general elections, I have some questions for the Minister of Water Resource Management, Dr. David Estwick, particularly in light of the confusing messages sent b y Dr. Estwick himself and the state-run Barbados Water Authority (BWA) on this matter.

I find equally disturbing, but by no means surprising, the fact that prior to the appearance of a story in the Trinidad and Tobago NEWSDAY newspaper, the people of Barbados were totally unaware that their government had signed a related Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) ever since April, 2015, with Amazone Resources (AR) A Dutch-Suriname company. This, in fact, means that yet another agreement has been consummated by this “pop-kite” government behind the backs of hard-working Barbadian taxpayers.

Perspectives on Youth Development Through the Eyes of John King - John King - BLP Candidate

The lyrics to the song entitled ‘The Greatest Love’ recorded by R&B Superstar George Benson and later by Whitney Houston reads as follows in the opening verse.

‘I believe the children are our future

Teach them well and let them lead the way’

Though considered a global smash hit and anthem, a look at the state of youth across the globe, would suggest these words ring hollow in today’s world.

War, human trafficking, hunger, disease and crimes against young people appear to be on the rise.

Christmas Message - John King - BLP Candidate

My Christmas message to you and your family!

As we prepare for the Christmas celebrations, our thoughts are understandably focused on how we intend to share, with family and friends.

From presents to the traditional Christmas meal, every last detail is carefully checked and rechecked to ensure the ideal outcome envisioned. However I want to use this opportunity not only to wish the constituents of St. Philip West a joyous season and a productive and prosperous new year, but to remind each and every one of you to allow the Christ qualities within to shine.

Many Barbadians are seriously challenged this season both economically and emotionally to celebrate as is, indeed, the custom through the years.

But this is also a chance to demonstrate the love, charity and care once a hallmark of true Bajan culture, by sharing with the less fortunate and vulnerable in our society.

In these very difficult times, easily the most difficult of our post-Independence history, extraordinary acts of kindness are necessary to ensure that a light of hope shines bright on the otherwise bleak forecast for the coming year under the present administration.
