Goompaw’s BBQ
Three grandsons and a great grandson just trying to make good bbq and have fun doing it.
We are 1 week away from one of the biggest competitions in the state. Nearly 20 of the best bbq teams and us, will be battling out at a great venue. Come on down enjoy the lake, enjoy the smoke, and some great competition.
Let’s welcome team number 20 Backwoods BBQ with head cook Ronald Fries!! Welcome
to the party guys!
Neighbor stopped me yesterday to ask if I was gonna have the smoker going. He wanted ribs. So it was an early morning but we got ribs and two pork butts going for that early morning smoke therapy.
After a mid-season seasoning, we got a center cut cheese stuffed pork loin seasoned with Fire & Smoke Society Hot for Peacher and Perfect Pork smoked over apple and cherry. Fueled with Jealous Devil Max. Will be finished off with Hoosier Daddy BBQ Ghost Roast sauce.
Happiest of Birthdays to our incomparable head cook Luke Childress! In honor of this special day, here’s a classic throwback of our fearless leader!
Happy 4th of July from all of us.
Smokes rolling today
After a hectic few months, smoker has been fired up again and getting dialed in for comps and just good eats. Yesterday was wings. Today, brats, sausage and pulled pork. What good are brats without the brat hot tub? Beer sponsored by Old Style.
Our team’s namesake was in WWII the Pacific side after Pearl Harbor but we honor all those who were there 80 years ago on this day.
The strong field of competitors at the Bloomfield Downtown Revitalization BBQ, Blues, and Brews today. While we did not get a call today, we put together a solid night and day of cooking. These turn ins definitely show our growth as a team compared to where we were last year and especially 2 years ago when we first started. This competition will always be special to us and I think we did Goompaw Keith proud today.

Life’s a breeze at BBQ, Blues, and Brews!
Sorry to leave everyone hanging yesterday. Goompaw’s boys had a day to be proud of at the Compassionate Hands: Cookoff. While we did not bring home any physical hardware, we got two calls with a 4th place in chicken wings and another 4th place in ribs, which lead to a 4th overall finish as well. We are looking forward to getting back at it in a couple weeks at Bloomfield and continuing to improve our craft in this third year!
Ribs are done and so is our day of cooking at the Compassionate Hands: Cookoff!
It’s all over but the cleanup and the results. At the very least, we made some food we were proud to turn in and put our name on.

We may be a bit biased, but these are some good chicken wings! Hopefully the judges will agree.
I didn’t get a good picture of our finished people’s choice. They went fast because how can you beat anything wrapped in bacon? 🥓 🤤

Ribs are done. Now we wait.
Won’t score well but chicken is done. I hate chicken.
This Saturday Goompaw’s BBQ will be knocking the rust off and getting back on the competition swing with Jammin' For A Cause on the west side of Indy. There will be some great food, great music and a good cause. Come on out and see what it’s like with all the great smells. Some of the best competitors in the state and Midwest are rolling out for this one. Hope to see you there.
Competition season is right around the corner. First competition next weekend on the west side of Indy. Ribs and chicken so I practiced 6 racks of comp ribs for people at work.
Happy Birthday Jason Childress
Check out the artwork for the Barbecue, Blues, and Brews Festival poster!
This poster was painted by local artist, Wyatt LeGrand! The poster shows touches of what will be at the festival. Once all logos are obtained, the poster will highlight our sponsors for the 2024 BDR event series and be distributed out to the community. Look for this masterpiece to hit the streets very soon!
We are so appreciative of Wyatt for donating his materials and time to paint this poster. Also- a huge shout out to all of our sponsors, without them this festival would not be possible.

Happy birthday goes out to the chicken expert himself, Jonathan Childress. Happy birthday cousin.
Decent December temps so we rolling smoke. Trying a ham and a couple racks of clearance baby backs. As always Jealous Devil max for the starting heat.
Work party? Family gathering? Tailgating? If you’re looking for some good BBQ at any of these events feel free to reach out. We have multiple meat options to accommodate your needs as best as possible. From all our families to yours, we hope you have a blessed and happy holiday season.
A bit of a late in the day post but Happy Thanksgiving to everyone. We were all able to spend it with family and friends and hope you were able to do so as well.
A little brisket style tri tip tonight. Fire & Smoke Society Black and Tan and Thundering Longhorn seasoning over cherry, oak and hickory. Always Jealous Devil max for the heat and the old reliable Oklahoma Joe's Smokers Highland producing quality smoked meat as always. It was quite delicious.
And that’s a wrap on the season! Final submission for the Veteran’s Day Cookoff is our pulled pork and pork butt money muscle. This was a combination of both Oklahoma Joe's Smokers, but always with the Jealous Devil charcoal and rubbed down with Fire & Smoke Society. Now we wait to see if we cashed in on those double points for the day!
