Wednesday Fun Facts: Serpae Tetras
Serpae Tetras are a wonderful freshwater fish that have a strong foothold in the aquarium scene. This species is not only beautiful, but they’re easy to keep. This makes them very beginner-friendly, or perfect for an aquarist who’s looking for something low-maintenance. Colourful and incredibly active, the Serpae Tetra is a fish that will add some vibrancy to your tank. These fish have become quite popular among the aquarist community due to their playful attitudes and stunning good looks. They’re relatively flat but have a tall frame and a trapezoidal shape.
The most visually striking aspect of the Serpae Tetra is their colour. Most specimens take on a reddish-brown colour. Their scales have a shiny finish that’s shimmers in the light. It creates a jewel-like luster that you can’t miss. Beyond their base colour, the Serpae Tetra has several distinct patterns on their bodies. The most noticeable is the black comma-shaped spot on their sides. Located just behind their gills, this spot can fluctuate in vibrancy. The interesting thing about Serpae Tetras is that their colours can change multiple times throughout their lives. For the most part, the base colours remain unchanged. However, the vibrancy will improve or degrade based on their diet and environment. They typically grown to a size of 1.75 inches and the average lifespan in captivity is between 5 and 7 years. Tank mates are other Tetras in groups of 5 to 7 and other peaceful fish. Now available at the Fish Room.

Wednesday Fun Facts: Hillary or Swordtail
These are one of the best choices for a pet fish, especially for beginners. Most swordtails come from Belize, Guatemala and Mexico, where they can be found in almost all places that has a freshwater source – like mountain creeks, streams and rivers at the lower parts of these countries. The name swordtail gives justice to its appearance – specifically, the male’s appearance. The male’s caudal fin protrudes along its lower half, the length of which can reach up to half of the body’s entire length. The female caudal fin has no such protrusion. The swordtail belongs to the group of livebearer fishes, this group gives birth to live fry. A female swordtail can produce offspring as often as every four weeks. Caring for swordtails is easy, the only thing that you really need to be sure of is the size of the tank. Although several swordtails can live in a 10-gallon aquarium, it would be better if they have a larger space to move about. Their life expectancy is around 3 to 5 years. They are peaceful fish and would make great tank mates with other similar species. Now available at the Fish Room.

Fun Facts: Plecos
Albino Bristlenose Pleco is also called the Bushynose Pleco, they are found in the rivers of South America. They can recognize food throughout the length of an aquarium with substrate, even if the lighting conditions are poor and the food is not visible. They can also eat a lot of plant matter or algae that’s in the fish tank, which is great to clean up the tank, but that doesn’t provide them with enough nutrients or a balanced diet. Using driftwood inside the tank of an Albino Pleco is extremely helpful, it provides a surface for algae growth, and it comes across as a major source of nutrition and fiber to the fish. Although people generally add them to a tank to help keep the tank clean, you should still feed them wafers or algae pellets from time to time. They are bottom-dwellers inside a tank and their capability to find food in low visual range merged with their superpower to camouflage in the environment makes these species very lavish and interesting. As a very pliable and adaptable fish, the albino bristlenose pleco has no problem whatsoever to be taken from their natural and transferred into your community tank, becoming a great addition to your aquarium’s diversity. This species can live somewhere between 3-5 years and it generally a peaceful fish. Now available at the Fish Room.

Wednesday Fun Facts: Choosing suitable tank mates
Choosing fish that get along is a challenge every aquarist faces. While there are certain combinations, we know off the top of our heads that do or do not work in most instances, there are countless others that can go either way depending on a variety of factors.
Here are some things to keep in mind when purchasing fish for your aquarium. Aquarium size is one of the contributing factors to what and how much fish you should have in a space. Most fish need space, and the more they have the better they tend to get along. When fish are crowded, they become agitated and are likely to fight with tank mates. A general rule of thumb for stocking a fish tank is one inch of adult fish size per net gallon of aquarium capacity, but territorial fish need even more space. Also have an idea of what size your fish will grow to as an adult.
Decorations and plants help with saltwater and freshwater fish compatibility in several ways. Most fish need a place to call their own and they define their personal areas by physical boundaries. In addition, when they can't see each other, they tend to mind their own business. Rocks, caves, driftwood and other decorations help define territories for cichlids and other territorial fish, while tall bushy plants provide a habitat for schooling fish like tetras, barbs and danios.
Fish Age is another factor, juvenile fish are usually easy going, even if they are known to become aggressive as adults. They can often be mixed with a wider selection of tank mates, which they'll accept as they grow and mature.
All of the factors mentioned above can affect how fish interact in an aquarium, but at the end of the day, fish have individual personalities and sometimes they behave in uncharacteristic ways so with this in mind, always do plenty of research before buying new fish for your aquarium.
