👩🏻‍🏫 The word "dessert," which is derived from the 🇫🇷 French verb "desservir," which in 🇬🇧 English means "to clear the table," first appeared in the seventeenth century. Before the last course, which at the time was a delicate fruit dish, etiquette demanded that napkins and tablecloths be changed.

👩‍🍳LAYERED CAKE (KEK LAPIS) RECIPE👩‍🍳

Kek lapis is a traditional cake served usually in Malaysia 🇲🇾 and Indonesia 🇮🇩at special occasions. It's quite tough to make, that's why it's really expensive 🥶 especially the ones with patterns but practice makes perfect!

👩‍🍳Below are the steps in making your own kek lapis:
1️⃣. Lined and greased a 6 inch (13 cm) cake pan. Preheat the oven at 380°F (193°C).
2️⃣ Beat butter and condensed milk till smooth. Leave aside.
3️⃣ In another bowl, beat the egg yolks and icing sugar till pale and thick.
4️⃣ Fold butter into egg yolk mixture.
5️⃣ Lastly, fold in sifted flour in 2 batches until combined. Add brandy.
6️⃣ Turn the oven to grill function. Put the cake pan into the oven for 1 minute.
7️⃣ Put a small ladle ( about 2.5 oz. /70 g) batter into the pan and spread evenly. Bake for 5 minutes or till the top is brown.
8️⃣. Remove from the oven and scoop the same amount of batter for the second layer. Repeat the same process.
9️⃣ After you have finished the last layer, turn the oven to bake function. Cover the top of the cake with aluminium foil and bake for another 5 to 10 minutes.
🔟 Remove and cool on a wire rack.

👩‍🍳 Follow these steps to get the perfect slices:
1️⃣ Chill the cake in the refrigerator 20-30 minutes before slicing them.
2️⃣ Gently mark the cake where you want to cut each slice using a blade of knife or unflavored dental floss.
3️⃣ Dip the knife in hot water before cutting to prevent uneven slicing or frosting sticking to the knife.
4️⃣ Wipe the knife dry and use a serrated knife to slice the cake slowly using gentle sawing motion.
5️⃣ Use a cake server or large offset spatula to remove the slice.
