SEASON ONE: 12—22 April at Dancehouse

Dancehouse SEASON ONE invites you to experience three exciting Naarm premieres questioning why we perform, why we watch, and how our histories linger in the body.

In week one, catch two chapters from Ryuichi Fujimura's HERE NOW! Trilogy: How I Practice My Religion and Fall! Falter! Dance!!! These touching and funny solos unearth how Ryuichi came to dance in 1991 and the exciting, precarious, and passionate career it started.

Also in week one is Tra Mi Dinh's new work (UP)HOLDING inspired by the dance marathons of America's Depression Era (think They Shoot Horses Don't They). A battle of endurance and desperation, this trio with Emma Harrison, Emma Riches and Tra Mi Dinh builds intensity, urgency and a questioning from the audience of why we witness.

In week two, following a premiere at SOPHIENSÆLE, James Batchelor's personal new work, Shortcuts to Familiar Places, peers into Australia's modern dance history and the influence of Gertrud Bodenwieser's (1890-1959) repertory and training through the body memories of her students.

'It was time they had a blackfella at the top' — A new era for ADT 05/07/2022

'It was time they had a blackfella at the top' — A new era for ADT Our oldest modern dance company, the Australian Dance Theatre, has been delighting and challenging audiences for nearly 60 years. Now Wiradjuri dancer and choreographer Daniel Riley is at the helm, becoming the first Indigenous man to lead the company. Also, we meet the winner of this year's Keir Ch...

THANK YOU Keir Choreographic Award 2022 —

I am buzzing and I am exhausted but most of all, I’m hugely thankful and honoured to be recognised as the KCA 2022 winner. Thank you to the selection panel and jury for fuelling my empowerment to expand and deepen my love for choreography and movement.

Exploring, deepening, and presenting choreographic work within this supportive and challenging framework has been invaluable - I can’t express my gratitude enough for being selected to be part of this years program, let alone to have been recognised with the award. It is a massive honour. My body is still realising/processing this immensely rewarding experience….

The ___ was brought to life thanks to my INCREDIBLE team. Thank you endlessly to for your radiant energy, super slick moves and for consistently smashing it out of the park. Dancing with you has brought me SO much JOY, I am damn lucky to have shared the stage and this work with you. you absolutely killed the sound - thank you for crafting the atmosphere of this world, I love it. Thank you so much to for stepping in and giving me the perspective to widen my view and focus in on the details. you are an angel who made my sunset dreams come true - thank you for helping me bring it all together

Presenting work alongside and WeiZen Ho, , , , , Joshua Pether, and
has been a privilege and so, so special. These artists are powerful and impressive, and I’m just stoked to have been in their company.

In creating The ___ I moved through ending after ending, questioning and learning about the edges of finality in both abrupt and uncertain ways. Eventually, it led me to embrace the endlessness of endings; and as I experienced and explored multiple versions of regeneration/renewal/reconstruction, I was consistently met with the circularity of it all. It’s left me feeling thrilled to be alive. I’m incredibly grateful to the KCA for providing me the platform to cultivate my arts practice, which has nurtured both my craft and my being.

Thank you, thank you, thank you to Phillip Keir, the Keir Foundation, and for your fierce commitment to support and celebrate independent artists. Thank you SO much to the tech crew and staff at Carriageworks and Dancehouse! An extra big thank you to for your steadfast leadership and to Geoffery Masters for holding us together.

These stunning images are by the legend
