"Not fear anyone except History" - A. Bonifacio
Ang Filipino ng Filipinas
Sabi ni Mabini sa kaniyang sinulat na talambuhay (memoire) na La Revolucion Filipina, "The ill-fated Andres Bonifacio used to say when he was alive that we should not fear anyone except History." "Let us learn from these lessons in history and fulfill our noble mission as good men," sabi pa ni Mabini sa kaniyang artikulong "Cual es la Verdadera Mision de la Revolucion Filipina?" noong 1899.
Dagdag pa niya: "True enough, History is an implacable judge and its verdict is severe against those who offend it."

Senator Jose Avelino
"What are we in power for?" Was this 'infamous' quote of Filipino politics misquoted after all?
On August 5, 1890, Senate President Jose Avelino was born in Samar. Admitted to the bar in 1914 after finishing law at the University of Santo Tomas, among his schoolmates being Claro M. Recto. Thereafter, he served as Samar representative (1922-1928), and was then elected to the Senate (1928-1935), first under the Democrata Party, and later as Nacionalista.
Prior to being reelected to the Senate in 1946 as a Liberal Party candidate, which body elected him as the nation's first postwar Senate President, Avelino also served executive positions, namely as Labor Secretary and Public Works Secretary, respectively. In 1949, he was considered as presidential timber, but a widely publicized caucus that year affected his chances. The Manila Chronicle placed Avelino's alleged statement "What are we in power for?" in the headlines. An excerpt of the contentious January 16 piece quoted Avelino as follows.
"Why did you have to order an investigation, Honorable Mr. President? If you cannot permit abuses, you must at least tolerate them. What are we in power for? We are not hypocrites. Why should we pretend to be saints when in reality we are not? We are not angels. And besides when we die we all go to hell. Anyway, it is preferable to go to hell where there are no investigations, no Secretary of Justice, no Secretary of Interior to go after us."
Except that it was probably not the exact quote to begin with. For one, Avelino was known to have spoken Spanish, which may raise doubt on the already translated English version that appeared to be a Manila Chronicle exclusive.
Quintin Doroquez wrote on the later testimony of one of the caucus attendees, Ilocos Sur Representative Faustino Tobia, who kept silent in the midst of the election campaign since he was a known supporter of President Elpidio Quirino, then seeking to win a term outright. To recall, Quirino was ushered to the presidency by the untimely death of Manuel Roxas. If Tobia was accurate, assuming he was just as proficient in Spanish, Avelino reportedly said:
(Mr. President, is it not the truth that not addressing vigorously these problems is to betray and negate fundamentally our duties as public servants? What for is our mandate from the people?)
Whether or not Tobia was entirely correct in his recollection, Avelino himself did not publicly attempt to clear the misconceptions, perhaps confident of his track record as a statesman, but the election resulted in his loss. In defeat, the first major third party campaign for the Filipino presidency obtained nearly 12 percent of the vote. Avelino retired from public life after finishing his Senate term, and devoted himself to the practice of law until his death on July 21, 1986. Proclamation No. 782, s. 2019 designated Avelino's birth anniversary, August 5, as a special holiday in all Samar Island provinces. Synopsis:
They say a revolution usually took 365 days, but could it be possible in just eighty? British gentleman Phileas Fogg drove the world crazy with his uncanny wager to circumnavigate the globe in eighty days, at the wake of the infamous robbery done against the Bank of England. His sensational adventure, however, came to a grim end on his part as he became 20,000 pounds poorer after finishing the journey on the 81st day. The slim loss, meanwhile, did not seem to discourage the populace from proving him right. The following year, 1873, was met with a daring public declaration from two ladies and one gentleman to fulfill the monumental task, this time through an even heftier wager that tripled Fogg’s stakes.
The lone gentleman who stepped up was one of Fogg’s few friends remaining in the Reform Club, the similarly eccentric yet relatively unknown Richard Haze. Intent on redeeming his friend’s convictions and taking his own place in history even as his prosperity was placed on the line, Haze decided to acquire the services of a valet who had sufficient experience and knowledge of the other side of the world in order to avoid Fogg’s fate. He found the person in the Filipino migrant worker Juan Ruiz, who beneath his cheerful façade as a valet, and his limited grasp of the English and Spanish languages was a closely held secret – he was the real bank thief.
Indefinitely detained in London due to utmost diligence of the police force, the disguised Ruiz now found in Haze’s wager a legitimate way for him to escape the country and accomplish the next phase of his ultimate mission. That is, bringing the money to the Philippines in order to fund a revolution there and avenge the failure of the 1872 Cavite Mutiny, an event engraved not only in the archipelago’s history, but also in Ruiz’s personal memory. With both men bent on their respective paths towards redemption and revolution, how would this affect the ever-changing world around them? In an era of brewing instability, how could victory be assured?

Salute To A Clean Flag
Napabilang siya sa kilusang Justice for Aquino, Justice for All (JAJA).
Muli itong ipinalabas noong 2013 ng UP Repertory Company.
