- Small spice containers/other containers which could be turned into little houses

- Old pots, even if they're broken! Especially terra cotta.

Welcome to The Avant Gardener! We make terrariums and miniature gardens with a commitment to sustainability. We use recycled containers, plants and fillings from local nurseries, and handmade or vintage decorations whenever possible.

You can find us at local pop-up markets throughout town- check back to see where we'll be next!

You can find examples of our gardens in our photo albums. We do accept custom orders, so if you have a theme in mind or a particular container/decorations you want to see transformed into a miniature garden, send us a message!

“May flowers always line your path and sunshine light your day.
May song birds serenade you every step along of the way.
May a rainbow run beside you in a sky that’s always blue.
And may happiness fill your heart each day your whole life through.”

Once upon a terrarium...

Mark Oberman had a problem. No matter how he tried, he could not stop making terrariums and gardens. They were lovely, quaint, verdant little things full of whimsy which made his house looks like something out of a fairytale. However, he was out of control and they were beginning to overtake his life. They sprouted between the floor tiles and burst up from the drains. They appeared under his pillow when he went to lay his head down at night and made their way between the pages of his books. With nowhere to sit, lie down, cook, or eat, something had to be done. One day, his daughter Christin had an idea.

“What if we sell some of them? Then everyone will get a piece of the joy, and you can have your house back! Plus, we can use it to support local businesses and sustainable practices like recycling!”

“What a great idea!” Said Mark.

And so The Avant Gardener was born.
