Gabon coup

ML perspective:

So soon after the coup in Niger, Gabon has experienced a coup and this deserves our attention.

Much like Niger Gabon is a former French colony with substantial natural resources and resultantly the countries independence has been entirely superficial. The nation has been kept thouraghly within France’s orbit since independence with a single family ruling according to the economic dictates of their colonial masters.

This coup has been condemned by regional blocs such as Ecowas which are regional blocs for colonial management and so it is tempting to imagine this coup as an anti-imperialist event. However, it is worth noting the coup was launched by government insiders and a former government insider has been appointed prime minister.

Unfortunately we might be looking at a palace coup where one regional bourgeoisie in service of the French is merely replaced by another. Cautious optimism is provided by the aforementioned condemnations as they suggest this coup was not sanctioned by imperialist powers, but broader conclusions are more difficult to draw.

What we can say is that all the colonies are under pressure and their populations are placed under ever greater pressure. One can safely assume these coups and revolutions will only increase in frequency.

We must encourage the left wing forces within these nations to seize the moment to make concrete demands and ultimately gain control of the state apparatus.

One point remains clear, organisation and coordination is as important as any revolutionary’s willingness to risk their life.
