We’ll be in Baku, Azerbaijan to host a regional youth summit called Expand Your Impact in collaboration with our partners, The International School of Azerbaijan!

We couldn’t be prouder to be bringing this in person event to Baku after months of mentoring the student led team to make it a reality.

It’s particularly special for our team at YOUTHTOPIA because this collaboration goes back a few years already where we have been mentoring students for our Changemakers workshops *virtually, connecting students to our network like .pe.rada and so many more!

With COP29 being hosted in Baku, we felt this would be the perfect opportunity to take our virtual partnership to the next level; we decided to host our first in person event for The Local youth in the region.

🗓️ 29 - 31st October
📍 Baku, Azerbaijan

when you throw your plastic away, do you ever stop and think where is “away” ?

Well, for many, this is what “away” looks like. It becomes a deadly toxic mountain of waste that destroys nature and impacts the health of people.

This is South East Asia’s largest landfill. Around 3,000 waste pickers work at Bantar Gebang landfill, east of our capital city, Jakarta. This is a moment captured in when I visited the community living and working on this landfill.

❤️‍🩹 I am so sad to see what our modern culture of single use plastic has created. It has created a “throw-away” mindset with little thought to consequence - in neither the short or long term.

In an article of Eco-business.com Atha from Greenpeace says “We don’t have solid regulations to protect our country (Indonesia) from imported waste from industrialised countries. There are regulations, but they are not clear,”

We need clarity. We need systems change. We need vision.

We need to recognize these burning of landfills as an “ECOCIDE”

And while we push for systems change, never underestimate that YOU can lead by example starting today. This movement of change needs all of us.
