‼️INVITATION‼️

THE WORLD OF REGIONAL SCIENCE

Dear regional science colleague:

We have decided to compose a unique volume which summarizes the ‘world of regional science’ in the form of an Encyclopedia. This major opus seeks to become a kind of ‘Wikipedia’ for regional scientists. It will comprise of an organized collection of hundreds of entries on concepts, theories, methods and applications. Each item will contain about 1000 words, written according to a systematic pre- determined format.

This work aims to become some sort of collective and shared body of knowledge in our field. Several hundreds of regional scientists from all over the world have already committed themselves to write an item text, which does not take much time. At this moment we still have a vacancy for about 100 entries (see attached list). All regional scientists are cordially invited to write a concise entry on one of the selected topics, by writing before December 23, 2023 an expression of interest to the handling editor, Zeynep Elburz ([email protected] or [email protected]).

You will then receive the necessary information.

We hope to make this joint effect a collective success for regional science.

Peter Nijkamp

‼️Is the New Economic Geography (NEG) still Alive and Well in 2023?‼️

Dear TRSA fellows and friends:

We would like to share some good news with you. You may know that on the occasion of the ERSA conference in Alicante (end of August), TRSA organized 4 special activities.

The last (hybrid) Special Academic Session (SAS) on the relevance of New Economic Geography (NEG) was attended by Paul Krugman, Ed Glaeser and Carlos Moreno.

It led Paul Krugman to write a special column in the New York Times on this question:
Is the New Economic Geography (NEG) still Alive and Well in 2023?

All in all, all activities were extremely well attended and led to fascinating debates and prospects.

Stay tuned!

Superstar Cities in the Age of Zoom by Paul Krugman

Sept. 1, 2023

https://www.nytimes.com/2023/09/01/opinion/cities-zoom-return-to-office.html

On Friday morning, just before writing this newsletter, I spoke to a conference of the Regional Science Association in Alicante, Spain. Notice the choice of preposition: “to,” not “at.” Given family commitments, I couldn’t attend in person, so this was a Zoom presentation from home — something we’ve all become familiar with over the past three years.
The title of my session was “Is the New Economic Geography Still Alive and Well in 2023?” The obvious subtext was, is it still alive and well given our ability to do what I was doing — participate in a discussion with people thousands of miles away?
Subscribe to The Times to read as many articles as you like.
Paul Krugman has been an Opinion columnist since 2000 and is also a distinguished professor at the City University of New York Graduate Center. He won the 2008 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences for his work on international trade and economic geography.

Regional Science - In Memoriam: Roberto Camagni 30/05/2023

‼️Announcement‼️

Dear colleagues and friends,

It is with deep sadness that we mourn the loss of our esteemed colleague and dear friend, Roberto Camagni. In remembrance of him, we have organized a memorial gathering that will take place at the ERSA conference in Alicante on Wednesday, August 30, 2023, towards the end of the afternoon. The memorial meeting is scheduled to last from 18:00 to approximately 19:15 (local time).
We cordially invite you to attend this memorial gathering (physical or online). If you wish to join us and, if desired, give a short speech in honor of Roberto, please send an email to Caroline Crevels ([email protected]), with a copy to Karima Kourtit ([email protected]). We will then make the necessary arrangements for this farewell event dedicated to our dear friend and colleague.

Additionally, we plan to compile an informal booklet that will capture personal thoughts and memories of Roberto Camagni. We invite all the speakers participating in the memorial session to contribute their reflections in a concise form, limited to one page. It would be great to include a photograph, picture, or any other meaningful text that you would like to accompany your contribution. This memorial booklet will be presented to Roberto's family, after our gathering.

Kindly submit your one-page contribution to Caroline Crevels ([email protected]) with a copy to Karima Kourtit ([email protected]), with Karima Kourtit in c.c.. We also extend the latter invitation for colleagues who may not be delivering a speech on site, but still wish to express their thoughts to send in a concise memorial contribution. The same invitation is extended to Roberto's friends and colleagues from all corners of the world. The deadline for submitting your contribution is July 30, 2023.

We will keep you informed of any further details regarding the memorial gathering for Roberto. For now, we express our deepest gratitude for your support and participation.
