I spent my birthday this year (back in April) exploring and enjoying my annual birthday bird count amongst a special Garry oak ecosystem.
I love taking the time to reflect on the year behind and to get excited for the year ahead!
I also love documenting the flowering seasons on film. It makes it feel extra special! It’s exciting to get a roll back and have it you teleported back to a certain day or trip!
It feels so special to get to document the birds, bees and bugs this way.
Quince is a wonderfully unique flowering shrub that you can grow here on Vancouver island.
They make a lovely addition to an orchard with their bright pink blossoms in spring and their edible fruits in the fall.
The fruit can be made into delicious concoctions like honey poached quince pie or slow roasted quince with ricotta & pistachio.
They are loved by pollinators like bees, which provide them with nectar and pollen in the spring.

June Plum (Oemleria cerasiformis) is a deciduous shrub native to the PNW.
This part shade plant prefers moist thickets, stream banks and open woodlands.
They bloom in February and provide pollen and nectar to hummingbirds (in particular the Rufus), butterflies & other beneficial pollinators.
Their berries are edible and many parts of this plant have been used traditionally for food and medicine by The Coast Salish Peoples.
June Plum is a great addition to native hedgerows, along with Ocean spray, Snowberry, Sword Fern & Salmon Berry

Red Flowering Currant (Ribes sanguineum) is one powerful pollinator plant.
They are an early blooming shrub, providing early-emerging pollinators like bumble bees & mason bees an important nectar & pollen source when not a lot of other plants are not in bloom.
This shrub is considered a prized food source for the rufous hummingbird.
Their leaves are a food source for butterfly larvae & their berries are eaten by songbirds like the American Robin & Cedar waxwings.
It can grow in a variety of sites, from shad to full sun.

If you don’t live in the valley I have updated the blog portion of my website to include this article.
📷✨: Pictured above is a spring blooming variety of Veronica called Veronica Gentianoides.
This gorgeous light blue perennial is a rare colour in the garden, makes an excellent cut flower and is a great addition for soft, whimsical blooms in late spring.
Prefers full sun to part shade but I notice it does better in part shade during the hotter summer months.

When I first started growing, one of my garden goals was to grow salad greens year round.
With a small greenhouse, row cover cloth and a little love, you can grow your own salad bar year round too!
Growing during the winter season can be both fulfilling & very challenging at times.
It can feel daunting but have no fear, cold hardy plants are here!
We are so lucky to live on Vancouver island, where we are able to grow year round.
If you’re interested in a free PDF download of what to grow in the greenhouse during the colder months please reach out!
Swipe to see a preview of pdf document!
