TODAY IN HISTORY, APRIL 6 | OMUKAMA KABALEGA DIES
On this day in 1923, Omukama CHWA II Kabalega of Bunyoro-Kitara passed away at the age of 70, having made considerable contributions to the history of mankind.
TIMELINE
18.06.1853 - Born to Omukama Kamurasi KYEBAMBE IV of Bunyoro-Kitara.
1869 - Ascended the throne at the age of 16
1872 - Defeated Sir Samuel Baker at Masindi frustrating his attempt to annex Bunyoro and the entire Lake Victoria region to the equatorial province of Egypt.
1875 - Dethroned Omukama Kasagama KYEBAMBE III of Tooro and re-annexed Tooro to Bunyoro-Kitara.
1879 - Bunyoro was the only place in the world where Caesarean section was performed to save both mother and baby.
1888 - Dethroned Kabaka Mwanga II and installed Prince Kalema who ruled Buganda for 1 year.
1869-1899 - Discovered a cure for sleeping sickness and immunized his people against endemic syphilis.
1891-1899 - Fought superior imperialist British forces for a whopping 9 years using locally manufactured rifles.
1897 - Mwanga's son Daudi was named CHWA II upon enthronement as new Kabaka of Buganda.
1899 - Captured in Kangai, Dokolo District.
14.02.1923 - Released from Exile (Seychelles)
6.04.1923 - Died in Jinja Municipality at a hill that was thereafter named Mpumwiire/Mpumudde (“I have rested”).
26.04.1923 - Buried at Mparo, Hoima Municipality.
09.04.1999 - Bunyoro-Kitara commemorated 100 years since his Capture. Kabalega SS students namely: Muhumuza D. Silvester Jr. S.4C, Ochaki Godwin S4.C, Ruyonga Chris (RIP) S.4R and Tibaingana Edward S.4R presented a special poem to the King and his guests at Karuziika Palace, Hoima..
