Title of Artwork: Cranes grace the water
Name of Artist: Beatrix Joie Eniaela C. Mafe
Size: 1080x1032
Medium: Ibis paint

In Japan, the crane is one of the mystical or holy creatures and symbolizes good fortune and longevity because of its fabled life span of a thousand years. As the crane is a symbol of long life, strings of 1,000 paper cranes, or senbazuru in Japanese, are often offered as a get-well gift expressing hope for a person's recovery, as a sign of support for natural disaster victims, or encouragement for sports teams. Overall, The crane symbolism represents immortality, purity, vigilance, longevity, and good fortune. I was taken away by the crane’s figure and I admired the whole meaning and beliefs behind it. In my opinion, this belief realy is true and it actually works since if you are that determined to fold a thousand paper cranes just to get your wish, you would be able to achieve what you are longing to have through folding these paper cranes. In exchange you become more determined to reach that want and work harder to achive it. The crane is just a metaphor and a stepping block that you will encounter. In creating my work, I did my research on how cranes look like and their figure. I also took the advice given to me that I should have a main element to be given the most focus to the viewers eyes. As for the elements I practiced in my artwork, I made sure the colors are pleasing to the eyes, spacing was just the right amount to give focus to my main element which are the cranes. For the principles however, i used unity to then again give the cranes the spotlight, variety to give the eye more places to view and linger, rhythm to make everything fall in place perfectly, shape to show the structures and thoroughly make everything more realistic, perspective and depth to again give the drawing more dimension and I applied this most on the waves as water has a very unique presence and I wanted to make it more realistic. I created this work to show the importance of cranes and how beautiful of a creature they are. I wanted to make cranes known a little more through this artwork. Overall, the whole experience was fun to do and I look forward to doing something like this once more. I got the time to reflect o certain aspects of my life as I did this and I learned a lot more about myself.

I've recently discovered man Korean cultures and I wanted to try out and incorporate it into my artworks.

Title of Artwork: Kūhaku no Kao no josei (The blank face lady)
Name of Artist: Luisa Leonor N. Trinidad
Size: 11 inches x 6 inches
Medium: - Watercolour tube set
- Paper
- Artist Brush
- Black Ballpen
The date signed: 3/4/2021
In this artwork, I called this 'The blank face lady'. Why? It's because the woman in the kimono is white, and white
means 'purity' or 'pure'. As you can see, the land where the blank face lady is standing is colourful and lively. It's
simple, yet it's elegant, just like her dress. It's in perfect harmony and pleasing to look at it. It means the Blank face
lady gives joy, satisfaction, happiness, purity, comfort and positive things, and it will continue to spread those
positive feeling to whom who needed it. Then there is this black shaded area of my artwork, And this represents the
sorrow, melancholy, and darkness of the person who's trap inside that feeling. But we also noticed that the blank
face lady also has a black colour -which is her hair- is the only similarity these two shares. Anyone who gives
positive sentiments to those who aren't that pure also feels grief and wistfulness, while the uncoloured area of my
artwork represents our journey that we still need to give colour and explore. In other words, we can be the Blank
face lady, and we can the blackened tree.
Why did I create this work? It's because I want to make everyone aware and conscious of life. We can be the Blank
face lady, the giver of hope and the inspiration, and we can be the black shaded tree who needs their blank face
lady. Without each other, there will be no difference and improvements to make. Without despair and sadness,
there will be no memories to make, experience to have and happiness to feel. But without joy and delight,
everything might've been black and grey. And these two need each other until the whole painting has colours
because everyone has their art to paint.

Title of Artwork: Kimono National Costume of Japan
Name of Artist: Jasmine Lois D. Jupson
Size: 9" x 12"
Medium: Sketch pad, Paint brush, Watercolor, Pencil
Date Signed: March 3, 2021

"My artwork is about the Kimono, the national costume of Japan. Kimono is a loose robe or gown tied with a sash, worn as a traditional outer garment by Japanese women and men. Women may wear it with a broad sash called an obi, having a large bow in the back. The kimono is a powerful symbol of Japanese heritage, but it is a simple garment in terms of its structure. The Kimono is mostly worn on special occasions like weddings, festivals, and funerals. Tourists can also rent a Kimono for the day and see the sights in true Japanese fashion. Today, Kimonos are most often worn by women, and on special occasions. While I was making my
artwork, I came up with many ideas and add some details. I had fun while making it and it made me more happy when I finished it. " Art is something that makes you breathe with a different kind of happiness." - ANNI ALBERS"

Title of Artwork: Under The Sakura Trees
Name of Artist: Victoria Anne C. Abu
Size: 2000px by 2900px
Medium: Digital Application (Krita)
Date Signed: March 18, 2021

"My artwork showcases the beauty of the culture of a particular country in East Asia - the Land of the Rising Sun, also known as Japan. In my digital artwork, I’ve included Japan’s national attire - a kimono, as well as the cherry blossom trees or the Sakura - one of the things Japan is mostly known for. These two things alone already describe the strong points of Japanese art, which is why I incorporated it as the main focus of my digital artwork.

I’ve created this piece digitally in a free drawing application known as Krita on my PC, as well as a simple drawing tablet. The process took about 2 days, but it was all worth it in the end. Overall, I really enjoyed the whole experience. The elements of art I’ve included in the piece was lines, shapes, color, space, form, and texture. By playing with different brush tips, color palettes, and brush sizes within the app, I’m quite sure I’ve applied the six elements mentioned above. As for the principles of art, I used emphasis, contrast, balance, rhythm, unity, and pattern within the artwork. In my experience, I’ve arranged the elements of the drawing - such as the person, the tree, the background, etc. - so that all are evenly put in the right place on the canvas, following the principles of art mentioned above.

As for why I chose this particular artwork to be designed, one of the main reasons is the admiration I have for Japan and its culture. I’ve always wanted to go to Japan one day, and so I’ve created this artwork in order to show my love and appreciation for the country, as well as to its culture. I also adore cherry blossoms, so I’ve included it in my artwork as well. As for the process, drawing really helped me express my feelings about a particular topic, so making this artwork, or drawing in general, is really significant when it comes to expressing yourself, and this artwork really guided me to do just that."

Title: Tokyo, A Neon Night
Artist: Kian Carl L. Canapi
Size: 1800 x 1285
Medium: Autodesk Sketchbook (Digital)
Date Signed: Friday, March 19, 2021

This artwork is all about the nightlife of Japan, whenever I think of Japan, specifically Tokyo, I imagine the bright LED and Neon lights scattered across the city, I also wanted to show in my drawing of Tokyo, a Neon Night is that there are many things happening in a city and so I placed different establishments in the buildings like the seafood ramen shop. The concepts that I used that were derived from East Asia were the traditional clothing of the Japanese featuring the Kimono in the center as well as the Ramen shop on the right to show one of their tastiest foods and UniQlo which is a famous Japanese clothing store brand. Another concept that I also used was the look and feel of cities with bright neon or LED signs like Hong Kong, Tokyo, and Macau, and finally, I also would like to imitate watercolor which I did for the reflection of the signs.

The first thing that I did in order to make this drawing is that I used the perspective guide to sketch out the buildings then I picked some neon colors like blue, green, orange, etc. After that I used different layers to sketch out the major details then I started drawing on top of the sketches and I started coloring and adding more details. For the glow of the signs, I didn't knew which brush to use but in the end, I ended up using the Soft Air Brush as it gave the best results for the light reflecting and glowing off of different surfaces and it does have a resemblance of how watercolor brushes work which is also from East Asia based on my experience using watercolor.
The principles of art used in this drawing are balance since the main structures of the building are proportional and the second is contrast since the colors used, contrast with some of the other colors and contrast with the black background. The elements that I also used were value, which was used for the neon glow of the signs, form which was used for the signs, windows and doors shape, and finally, color which was used on some of the signs, specifically the blue and orange one in the center which uses opposite complementary colors.

Regarding why I created this work, I wanted to show the night side of life since when it is dark, light sources and their colors dominate our field of view and I find that interesting. Cities often have something going on that is unique and interesting with no place looking the same, and that is what makes them special, they are an economic hub as well as a place where people meet and have fun and where people love to socialize and I wanted to show that, and I did by using the different establishments. It was also my first drawing of something in the night which was hard for me at first but I wanted to do something new and challenging, and I knew that I would like it when I get to see the finished product. Making this was not easy as I wanted it to look natural and light is very hard to manipulate and predict sometimes but with enough perseverance and inspiration which I got from Minecraft RTX and other photos and videos, I finished it and I like the finishing result but even though it turned out great, I am still a little bit scared if google translated everything I typed to put on the signs correctly and I hope I did not write anything offensive but overall I am happy with it.

Title of Artwork: Todai-Ji Temple Sunset View
Name of Artist: Olivia Shelyn S. Balajadia
Size: 9” x 12”
Medium: Pencil and oil pastels
Date Signed: 2021

"This work is about the Todai-Ji temple with a sunset view in the background. The concept that I worked on that is derived in East Asia is the colors that I used that represent East Asia. I created this work by drawing the temple first then after that I colored it using oil pastels. After that, I did a sunset on the background of the temple so that it won’t look too plain. The technique that I used while doing this artwork is by remembering each detail of the real temple to make my drawing look like the real Todai-Ji. I shouldn’t miss any detailed structures of the temple. Because if I missed one thing it might not look like the real-life Todai-Ji. The elements and principles I used in art to make this artwork is color, space rhythm, shape, and balance. First of all, in the color, I made sure that the sunsets look presentable and beautiful. For space, I didn’t leave any blank space. I made sure that every space has a color or drawing. For the rhythm, I made sure that the line or shape in my drawing is outstanding and presentable. For the balance, I made sure that the structure of the temple is balanced and equal. I created this work because the Todai-Ji temple caught my interest for it is simple yet eye-catching. I was inspired to put a sunset because I thought that it will look compatible with the temple. Todai-Ji temple is the world's largest wooden building which made it more interesting. It is also the largest temple in Japan. That is why I chose this created output."

"The Hanbok is the traditional costume of Korea. Hanbok is one of the most beautiful fashion styles in the world and is commonly worn by Koreans during major holidays, birthday celebrations and weddings. It consists of Jeogori and Chima for women and Jeogori and Baji for men, when worn together it makes the shape of a bell. I chose this because I find the Hambok unique and beautiful. The Hanbok is a wearable piece of art. The top and bottom of the Hanbok make a simple structural beauty and rhythmic flow that complements the movement of the wearer's body. It also carries a deep heritage and culture behind its design and also has every stich design, and color thought out. I spent a lot of time creating this artwork because I'm still not used to doing digital art since it's just my second time doing it, it wasn't that hard though it takes a lot of time to do. I first sketched out an outline to make it easier to see what will my work look like later, then colored it and traced it with a darker color. Lastly I decided to draw a background since it was too plain before. The elements that can be seen in my artwork are lines, shapes, and color. The techniques that I used are emphasis and balance."

"My work is about spring in Japan. I was inspired by the early days of Japan and how beautiful the environment is, especially the blooming of cherry blossoms. I feature a Geisha. They are professional entertainers that are trained in various traditional Japanese arts, such as dance and music, as well as in the art of
communication. I found them very beautiful and unique to the culture of Japan. In my work shows a Geisha walking on a road after the rain and looks like a river, and the blossoms start to bloom, I wanted to show the beauty in nature and Japan's traditional lifestyle with the Geisha.

I created my work with coloring pencils and paper. It was hard at first since I had some problems in making the colors pop and solid. And the most useful technique I use was shading a part of the drawing vertically and horizontally to make the colors flat and not only stick to one color and try to mix color to make it not look dull. Elements of art that I was able to apply are "color"," shape", value". "texture". and "space", For the principles of art, I used "balance", "unity", "variety", "emphasis". and "movement".

I created this work to try and draw something I don't normally do. I wanted to try and make a more colorful and detailed work using coloring pencils, a medium I don't use frequently. I also wanted to try to draw different costumes and environments that could help me make more detailed works. I want to prove my skills and explore more concepts. Making this output helped me to learn techniques that I could apply in later works and making my work more cleaner."

“As I was finding my art reference, I came across Janella Salvador's picture on the cover of a book titled "I love you since 1892". I never read nor have an idea of what the book was all about, but I'm appalled by the picture, Janella's beauty, and the colors of her beautiful Baro't saya. I tried to mimic the silky, gold cloth around her by experimenting on my color palette in my artwork. And for her skin, I went on for a morena, rosy glowing touch to it. I wanted to depict the beauty of Filipinas and the lovely Traditional clothes that they once wore. I had fun experiencing the endless number of options and tools in Photoshop and learning how to utilize them, and for a newbie on Digital Art, I found it easier than Traditional art.”

"Art is something that comforts me in my free time. I often like to draw small sketches when I am free, and I like to improve my art. It relaxes me. I don’t do digital art very often, so making this was a little new to me, though I managed. Through making this, I learnt how diverse and deep art really is, because of the different mediums you can use, different styles you can take, and there’s a lot more to an artwork than what meets the eye. I also learnt that art isn’t something to rush. It takes time to make a true masterpiece. Art is a way to express ourselves, and we shouldn’t rush ourselves in doing so. I made this art work because, during my stay at Singapore when I was young, I really admired everything, but the Merlion stood out to me the most. It was probably the amount of media coverage, but it still impressed my young mind
nonetheless. I chose to draw it to relive a few childhood memories. I also drew it because I really personally like it. Art truly is an important thing in our life, because it makes us feel different things and express our true feelings."

I made this lantern to present Southeast Asia arts and crafts and show the wonderful thing that they created. Art is a way for me to express myself or in this case, my view on the Loi Krathong festival. When I create art like these, it gives me time to relax and learn more about the topic I choose. In my opinion, anyone can be proclaimed an artist because we are all creative in our own very special ways and we can showcase that in different and various ways. Loi Krathong is a Siamese festival celebrated annually throughout the Kingdom of Thailand and in nearby countries with significant southwestern Tai cultures The name could be translated as "to float ritual vessel or lamp," and comes from the tradition of making krathong or buoyant, decorated baskets, which are then floated on a river. Loi Krathong takes place on the evening of the full moon of the 12th month in the traditional Thai lunar calendar, thus the exact date of the festival changes every year."
