Do you give your dog massages? If you do, Dog & Soul loves that you care about your dog, but we also don't want you to accidently harm your fur baby. Ashley, the owner of Dog & Soul and a nationally certified canine massage practitioner, recently wrote a short informational piece called "How Canine Massage Can Hurt; 10 Common Health Factors That Can Make Canine Massage Unsafe". It's now available at DogAndSoul.Dog and will be sent to your email address as a PDF.
Did you know almost all 50 states require human massage therapists to be licensed. This greatly helps decrease the number of people getting accidentally physically hurt by massage. Massage can cause pain and injury if given to people who have some common medical conditions or who are even taking some over the counter pain medications. Massage can even make some acute medical conditions worse.
If you want to massage your dog, we think you are amazing, but please make sure its safe to massage your dog. You can also speak with your vet about your dog's current health and if he or she thinks massage is safe at this point, but you can also get this highly informative work to keep on hand just in case. Additionally, not all veterinarians are aware of the risk factors of massage.
Don't forget Dog & Soul is giving $25 to Mostly Mutts for every private canine massage given within 30 miles of their location in Kennesaw for all of August 2021! Call 404-652-9842 to schedule your best friend's massage!

What's the difference between a home cook, a line cook, and a registered dietitian who cooks? What's the difference between an owner who massages their dog, someone who massages dogs professionally, and a nationally certified canine massage practitioner? The short answer: education, exams, and using education and training to try to create a positive result.
A home cook and an owner who massages their own dog do not have to have any training or experience. A line cook and someone who massages dogs professionally may or may not have an educational background. A registered dietician who cooks and nationally certified canine massage practitioner have both been educated in their profession, have passed exams, and focus on the health related outcomes of their work. A registered dietician and a nationally certified canine massage practitioner will both most likely change their course of action depending on if the client is pregnant, has uncontrolled diabetes, has cancer, skin problems, recent surgeries, torn muscles, tendons, or ligaments, open wounds, and are taking specific medications.
If you massage your own dog at home, that's great! But there are things you should consider before you massage your dog so that you are not negatively effecting your dog's health. Certain medications, types of illness and behaviors are all examples of reasons that a dog shouldn't have a massage. Ashley recently wrote a short publication of reasons you shouldn't give your dog a massage or get approval from your vet before you massage. This publication could save your dog from injury or even surgery. It is only $20 and will be emailed to you upon payment. It will be available to purchase on the website soon, but for now you can call 404-652-9842 and pay with PayPal.
Do you know a dog that would enjoy a Private Canine Massage from a Nationally Certified Canine Massage Practitioner? If so, tag the dog or its owner in the comments below! They may win something! If you want to also share why they need a massage, go for it!
For all of August, Dog & Soul will be donating $25 to Mostly Mutts for every private canine massage given within 30 miles of their location in Kennesaw until 8/31/21. 30 miles within the Mostly Mutts location includes almost everywhere inside the perimeter of Atlanta and many Atlanta suburbs North and East of the perimeter.

Some of the most well known benefits of human massage therapy are pain relief, decreased joint stiffness, increased circulation, relaxation, and improved immune function. Let's see how many benefits your dog may experience during and after its professional massage! Remember that massage can help at any stage of life and benefits humans if they are athletes, sedentary, or anywhere in-between.
Donât let your furry weekend warrior fool you, their muscles are sore from the activities of the weekend possibly because of the âCouch potatoingâ during the business weeks. Unfortunately, inconsistent muscle usage can cause your muscle to be more prone to injury. Massage can soothe sore muscles and more importantly find areas that may be injured or overused. This can be very helpful to your dogs health and quality of life if your vet determines your dog needs rest or to avoid things like jumping to recover.
Do you worry that your dog may nip or bite during the massage? Iâve been trained and have learned from experience the warning signs dogs display with their body language. Sometimes dogs nip because they donât want an area touched because of a past painful experience and other times they may be fearful of just human touch by someone new. With specific areas, once the dog becomes relaxed, the dog will often let me work areas that it will not let others touch. Massage can be a great way to help dogs learn to trust others touching them in areas, like their paws, that generally make them worried or aggressive. With that being said, please know that I will not work an area of the dog that it does not want me to work shown by body language or verbal response. I give the dog time to relax and begin to trust me, and if the dog seems okay with me working a stressful area then I will do so very carefully. Do you have any other reason why you think your dog wouldnât want a massage? đŸ
Do you think your dog is too fearful to get or enjoy getting a massage? If you said yes, then again, I politely disagree. Having worked with many fearful dogs, especially fearful shelter dogs, nothing brings me more happiness than helping them come out of their shells. I give them the space and time and encouragement they need to come to me. Once they trust me enough to touch them, I can start massaging. And once the massage begins the parasympathetic nervous system can be activated to help the body relax and enjoy the massage. It is possible that the more often the parasympathetic nervous system is stimulated, the less fearful the dog can become with new people. Massage can also be a learning experience that people are good and not so scary. People who are fearful can also have anxiety, which massage can lessen; it would make sense if the same is true with dogs. Let me know if you have any questions! Donât forget $25 dollars is being donated to the Georgia House Rabbit Society every time someone has a private canine massage in July 2021. The canine massage must take place within 30 miles of the Georgia House Rabbit Society.
Do you think your dog is too high energy, wiggly, or distracted to get a massage or get enough benefit from the massage? If you do, I politely disagree. Yes, it may take me longer to get your dog to a calmer more relaxed state, but just getting them to calm down with me being a new âexcitingâ person is a learning experience for them and can benefit their nervous system as well. Massage calms people down by stimulating the nervous system, specifically the parasympathetic nervous system which is responsible for helping dogs to rest, digest, and be calmer. I originally learned this in human massage school, but the NBCAAM also states that massage stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system. For example, I have a 1.5 year old mixed breed puppy (including German Shepard and Husky) and I can still get him to lay down and relax with massage when he has been begging to play fetch in the rain and mud. And by begging Iâm mean running back and forth through the house, carrying his ball from me to his dad while crying, and aggravating my ten year old couch potato for 30 minutes straight. Not only can massage stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system, but it also can help soothe those sore muscles from being a high energy dog. The muscles that can be sore or overused can vary on the activity or activities that your dog participates in the most, as well as how your dog uses itâs body differently due to pain or injury. Donât forget that anyone who schedules a canine massage within 30 miles of the Georgia House Rabbit Society by July 31st 2021 will be helping to raise funds for GHRS. $25 will go to GHRS!
Happy Friday! Let us massage your dog by July 31st 2021, and Dog and Soul will Donate $25 to the Georgia House Rabbit Society! You must live within 30 miles of the Georgia House Rabbit Society in Kennesaw. Have a great weekend everybody!
Dogs can be so good at hiding pain. When massaging a dog, I am feeling for muscle tone, temperature, any abnormal lumps or bumps, scar tissue, spasms, twitches, as well as watching their body language. All of these things give information about how the dog feels physically. The smallest of lumps or bumps can be anything from a bug bite to cancer, but it is something that all massage therapists bring to their human clientâs attention, and I always bring it to my clientâs ownerâs attention. When I give a dog a massage, the dog receives the same amount of care, attention, and professionalism as my human clients did. If you are new to Dog & Soul, for every canine massage given within 30 miles of the Georgia House Rabbit Society in Kennesaw between now and July 31st 2021, Dog & Soul will donate $25 to GHRS. They are the largest rabbit specific shelter in Georgia and there are only a few like it in the country. Ashley is certified by the NBCAAM and has earned over 950 hours of massage training since 2017. She may be the most up-to-date and highly trained certified canine massage practitioner in the Southeastern United States.
