Nouvelle excitante à partager avec vous ! 🎉 Je suis très heureux de vous annoncer que je collabore désormais également avec la Galerie à New York, qui me représente. Cet ajout à mon parcours artistique marque un chapitre riche en émotions et en créativité.

Je tiens à exprimer toute ma gratitude envers ma Galerie à Montréal pour son soutien indéfectible et pour avoir cru en mon travail. Cette collaboration continue de m’inspirer et de jouer un rôle clé dans mon évolution artistique.

L’opportunité de travailler avec la Galerie Claire Oliver ouvre de nouvelles portes et représente une étape excitante dans ma carrière. Spotlight on Moridja Kitenge Banza, one of the four uber talented artists now on view in “Reimagining Icons”. We have a lot of exciting news to share about Moridja - stay tuned!

Born in Kinshasa in 1980 in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Banza graduated from the Académie des Beaux-Arts de Kinshasa and the École Supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Nantes Métropole
 
As a multidisciplinary artist, Banza expresses himself through painting, photography, video, drawing and installation. His approach is between reality and fiction, a means by which he questions the history, memory and identity of place. Through his works, the artist intentionally conflates fact and fiction in order to disrupt hegemonic narratives and create spaces where marginal discourse can exist.
 
By drawing on both current and ancient realities, Banza organizes, assembles, traces, figures, revisits parts of his history, reappropriating the codes of religious, cultural, political, social and economic representations with the aim of highlighting the contradictions that construct his identities. Thus, the artist creates his own tools to better invest in the territory of others with the aim of nourishing all these areas of research which inspire his practice.

The « Emerald Room » exhibition presents a series of intimate paintings and drawings featuring black female figures inspired by Denver, a fictional character from Toni Morrison’s novel Beloved. By transposing literary references into the pictorial field, the artist explores the impact of fiction on the construction of reality.

Mon travail se joue comme lieu d’introspection du caractère contradictoire du phénomène de l’immigration. En même temps que l’éloignement de notre terre natale et de nos racines nous peine, nous nous épanouissons et commençons à construire de nouveaux fragments identitaires dans le pays d’accueil. J’utilise des pigments naturels, comme le safran par exemple, une épice emblématique de la culture culinaire iranienne, mais aussi un élément essentiel dans mon bagage de voyage.

My work acts as a place of introspection into the contradictory nature of the phenomenon of immigration. At the same time as the distance from our native land and our roots causes us pain, we blossom and begin to construct new fragments of identity in our host country. I use natural pigments, such as saffron, an emblematic spice of Iranian culinary culture, but also an essential element in my travel luggage.

Cet été, la Fondation PHI pour l’art contemporain est heureuse de présenter l’exposition personnelle de Moridja Kitenge Banza, intitulée «Habiter l’imaginaire».

À travers une pratique multidisciplinaire qui comprend la peinture, la photographie, la vidéo, le dessin et l’installation, Kitenge Banza étudie les aspects politiques, culturels et sociaux du «terrain», à la manière d’un géomètre, afin de cartographier les limites et les indicateurs des relations de pouvoir d’un lieu donné. Le titre de cette exposition conçue par l’artiste résume efficacement le modus operandi de sa pratique: habiter l’espace de l’imaginaire et en faire un espace d’agentivité. Pour cette exposition, Kitenge Banza propose un large corpus de nouvelles œuvres comprenant des oeuvres picturales, des installations, de l'audio et de la vidéo.

This summer, the PHI Foundation for Contemporary Art is pleased to present a solo exhibition by Moridja Kitenge Banza: “Inhabiting the Imaginary.”

Through a multidisciplinary practice that includes painting, photography, video, drawing, and installation, Kitenge Banza investigates the political, cultural and social aspects of the “terrain,” as would a land surveyor, to map the boundaries and markers of a place’s dynamics of power. The title of the exhibition conceived by the artist, efficiently encapsulates the modus operandi of his practice; to dwell in the space of the imaginary, which becomes a space of agency. For this exhibition, Kitenge Banza proposes a large body of new work including painting, installation, audio and video.
