Wit's End Farm

It’s been a long time since I updated everyone on the happenings around the farm.

I just couldn’t. It’s been maybe the most horrible 7 months of my life, with a few brights spots. But I had-and am still having—a lot of trouble getting past the awfulness.

We lost Kirby on October 5, 2021. It was the hardest decision we’ve ever had to make. He wasn’t getting around almost at all anymore and was pretty clearly dealing with pain. He left us here at home, on his favorite bed, with a mouthful of ham, in the arms of the people he loved most.

And I haven’t been the same since.

We lost Wisteria the chicken. We lost my favorite hen, Annie. We lost Jemima the runner duck. And on April 7 of this year, we lost Betty. I’m not ready to talk about her yet, but she also crossed over here at Wit’s End, being loved on by her people.

And we lost one of our greatest friends in November after a short but ferocious illness.

On the other hand, on October 12, I walked into the barn to find a new life— Kiki had given us a beautiful buckling we named Finn. He did not come without a little sadness, as his twin sister Starr was not born alive. Finn has been the brightest little speck of brilliant light in a very dark time

On December 31, we welcomed a lovely little mini silky fainter doe I call Deenie. She has been a joy.

I broke my ankle, too, and recovery has been challenging.

I will try to update more frequently. Grief is an all-consuming beast.

Wow, it’s been a hot minute since I updated.

We lost Kirby in October. That’s the biggest reason. I just haven’t been up to it. I’m still grieving. I’ll tell that story on a day I don’t mind crying for awhile.

In happier news, we have two birthdays at Wit’s End today! Blossom, one of our two Tennessee Fainters, turns two! And Kiki, the herd queen and eldest of the Wit’s End goats, turns 4! Send out a happy birthday to these beautiful girls.
