John Davison - writer
I do lots of things, one of the most important is writing. My sci-fi novel Electrodermal is out now.
One more week to go to get 15% off books, zines, postcards and music. Use the code: Stockingfiller.
I’m running a sale across my website these next 2 weeks. 15% of my novel, zines, postcards and music of my band Speed Dinosaurs. If anyone wants to bag a present for themself or a family member use the code: Stockingfiller.
Owww, that feels like a milestone for my latest story. Absolutely loving the sci-fi short I’m writing linking to AI and a bunch of other things. Feels like my next publication is gonna be a series of short pieces of speculative fiction.
My wonderful wife Charlotte and I are both being published in this excellent anthology. If you want to bag it and a bag of beans hit them up! ☕️ 🫘 🙂
Friends this is the last weekend of our ISBN Coffee Kickstarter! We'd love to get a few more backers - this would help us reach some awesome stretch goals. Please spread the word, thanks (link in comments)
It’s the last few days of my 137 Challenge for ActionAid UK. I’ve being doing 137 sit-ups & squats a day to raise money to stop violence against women and girls. You can sponsor me until the end of the month, link in the comments. £1 from each book sale this month is also going there. I’m 12,500 words into my latest story and really enjoying it.
Also, keep petitioning for a ceasefire in Gaza! The Palestinians have suffered enough injustice and apartheid for 75 years without these atrocities. ☮️
I’m over 11,000 words into my latest short story. Really enjoying writing this one! Got some ideas for other sci-fi / speculative fiction shorts. My next project is likely to be an anthology. 🙂 Also happy Inktober everyone!
Hi folks, it’s October and I’m raising money for Action Aid by doing the 137 Challenge.
For every day this month I’ll be doing 137 reps of either sit-ups, squats or step-ups to end violence against women and girls. In addition, for every copy of Electrodermal I sell this month I’ll donate a pound to ActionAid UK.
My donation page is here if anyone want to support:
https://www.justgiving.com/page/john-davison-1695931398845
Why 137? The UN say every day 137 women are killed by a partner or family member. 1 in 3 will be victim of violence in their lifetime. Action Aid are an international charity that works with women and girls living in poverty.

Electrodermal is 1 year old! It’s been so great seeing this book come into the world, this time last year I’d packed a bunch of them to mail out and was getting ready for the launch party at The Chemic Tavern. It’s been interesting seeing the advances in A.I. Since writing this - a major theme of the story.
Thanks to everyone who helped, recommended, reviewed, promoted or picked up a copy. For anyone who wants one visit my website. If you want a review copy for any form of media outlet - message me to arrange.
Happy birthday Electrodermal! 1 🥳 🎂⚡️🧬🌳

I’m excited my old English teacher is getting a copy of Electrodermal! I hope she likes it! I’ve been hearing more positive reception from people who’ve read their copies. It’d be great to get more into the world as the novel nears its first birthday on May 28th.

Today I’m staying in with my 2 beautiful cats, writing painting and drawing; surrounded by freezing fog in West Yorkshire. “It is a flawed notion that individualism leads to greater happiness.” The legion of voices began, “We cannot help being part of an interconnected world, and it’s only through intelligent, coordinated action that we can improve individual happiness and give ourselves the best chance of survival and prosperity.”

“How much more accurate and useful was the advice when your device is always listening? Scanning fingers, eyes, facial patterns, worry and most importantly the electrodermal flux contained on and outside the skin?”
“Delves deep into a dystopian fiction in a breathless flight through a cyberpunk landscape … intertwines speculative strands on technology’s direction as a regulator and liberator, and our own relationships with technology in the present day. Totally Enjoyable.” - Cubesville
Really happy to see the cover artist to Electrodermal reading their copy. It took time to get a copy to Southern Brazil!
If you haven’t bought a copy of my debut novel speculating about Humanity’s progress over the next part of the century you can get it and the awesome alternative covers postcard set via my website, link in the bio. They would make great xmas presents!
Recommended reading: Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi. A comic strip autobiography covering the cultural history of Iran from the revolution into this century. A fascinating insight into what has gone on in that country contextualising really well what is taking place now. I consumed this in under 3 days unable to put it down & can’t recommend it enough. The Iranian members of my family give this a personal link. It’s also a film. Check it out!
Rereading a classic, Yevgeny Zamyatin’s 1921 novel ‘We’. It’s social satire / sci-fi novel that, along with James Burnham’s The Managerial Revolution, was a deep influence on Orwell’s 1984.
Zamyatin shows the limits of collectivist over-organised society where humans live in the One State, are literally named as numbers living behind a great glass wall. The story describes a mathematician going mad, developing the illness of an individual soul. He argues for the freedom of an unknown tomorrow in the name of Man. Great to read a classic and free-thinking Russian writer, especially at this time.
“He will sit down in the centre of the cobweb, the white wise Spider - the white-robed Benefactor, who has wisely bound us hand and foot with the benecficent nets of happiness.”
Come say hi, buy a book zine or some music if you’re in Bradford today!

Great zine day and a review of Electrodermal! The awesome one way ticket to cubesville zine interviewed me about books that influenced me & printed a reviewed of my novel. I also have 2 articles in the new Lights Go Out Zine.
“Electrodermal delves deep into dystopian fiction in a breathless flight through a cyberpunk cityscape - critical of technology, but not condemning it… John intertwines speculative strands on technology’s dirction as a regulator and liberator, and our own relationship with technology today. Totally enjoyable.” - Cubesville
Check out these amazing zines and my book on their respective websites. 😊

Quotes:
“Technology is a two-way gate… For everything ever created with a use, it also has a misuse: a way to use it against its intended will.”
“How much more accurate and useful was the advice when your device is always listening? Scanning fingers, eyes, facial patterns, worry and most importantly the electrodermal flux contained on and outside the skin?”
“Hundreds of people and an array of stalls lined the sides of the square. Pillars of light cast projections into the air towards the undersides of four gigantic, metal stalks which acted as retractable wind and rain shelters. Large advertising screens lined the outskirts; cafés, juice bars and multi-story buildings bordered these.”
Having written and illustrated an article for issue 5, it was awesome to get my issues 6 & 7 of Papercore International Punk zine delivered by Fer and Mariles from Toulouse / Salamanca on their UK van tour. Great spending a couple of hours chatting and showing around Saltaire. Remember, buy zines and meet new people! Papercore is an excellent, varied multi-perspective read!
