Did you know that cattle have been present in the Americas for over 500 years? It all started when Christopher Columbus brought a group of Spanish cattle known as Criollo to the Caribbean on his second voyage in 1493. These cattle were well-suited to the tropical climate, since they were mostly brought from the tropical Canary Islands, which the conquistadors used as stepping stones before crossing the Atlantic.
Over time, the Criollo cattle evolved to adapt to the different environments they were introduced, giving rise to a variety of regional breeds. The mythical Texas Longhorn is one of such breeds.
Other examples of Criollo breeds are the Criollo Limonero, from Venezuela; Blanco Orejinegro from Colombia and the Criollo YacumeƱo from Bolivia.
The arrival of British and Indian breeds in the 19th and 20th century significantly reduce the relevance of these breeds. However, efforts are underway in multiple countries to preserve them for both historical and productive purposes.
