Congratulations to these two legends !
Lindsay Miles for Banksia Ward Vic Park and Sky Croeser for Victoria Park Jarrah Ward have been elected to Town of Victoria Park Council along with Daniel Minson for Councillor - Jarrah Ward, Victoria Park and Peter Melrosa and Claire Anderson.
The Mayor Karen Vernon was re-elected.

22/10/2023

The count continues with our local government elections. It started last night at 6pm and finished at 10pm. What we do know is that Karen Vernon was re-elected as Mayor.
The counting process is much slower this time round due the preferential voting.

21/10/2023

To the candidates who have put their hands up to run for council in the Town of Victoria Park, I take my hat off to you.
To those who have run campaigns positively, actively talking to community, supporting diversity and promoting progressive ideas for our town, thank you and good luck šŸ¤ž
Take time to rest.
To those who havenā€™t voted yet!!! Thereā€™s no time to rest!!! Go to the administration building and vote!!!! You have till 6pm.

18/10/2023

Calling out some pretty shameful behaviour from two of our Town of Victoria Park Council Candidates at last nightā€™s Council Meeting.
With respect to some members of our community Iā€™m not going to identify the behaviour, suffice to say, if Rick Sneddon (candidate for Banksia) and Vince Maxwell (Mayoral candidate) get in, I worry about the treatment of any minority group in this community by them.

18/10/2023

Itā€™s Wednesday, too late to post your ballots for our local elections, but not too late to vote!
You can drop your ballots off at the Town of Victoria Park administration building 99 Shepperton Road. Election Day is this Saturday 21st.
The return of ballots to date is very low, Banksia Ward 25.02% and Jarrah Ward 26.46%.
This is concerning as it means that someone with not that many votes could get in, which is great if it is a positive, progressive, proactive candidate, not so if it isnā€™t šŸ˜©

17/10/2023

Happy Birthday to you Lindsay Miles for Banksia Ward Vic Park, letā€™s make it a great birthday week by electing you to council.
Election Day Saturday 21st.

Photos from Banksia Business's post 15/10/2023

Council Election Day is Saturday 21st
Understand some of us may be feeling a little jaded or flat at the moment I urge you to get your ballots ( I know theyā€™re sitting there on your bench or table ) fill them in and post them Monday.
Still thinking šŸ¤” check out Lindsay Miles for Banksia Ward Vic Park and Sky Croeser for Victoria Park Jarrah Ward. Two amazing candidates committed to making Town of Victoria Park a better place for all.
We need compassionate, caring, proactive people on Council.
P.S you can vote on the day at the towns administration office.

Voting is easy! 13/10/2023

No excuses!!! Post by Monday

Voting is easy! While not compulsory in WA, all electors are encouraged to vote in their local elections. Here's how.

12/10/2023

For those of us who didnā€™t make the Candidates Forum last night, Sky Croeser for Victoria Park Jarrah Ward for recording and sharing information from the event. Lindsay Miles for Banksia Ward Vic Park was unable to attend due to being unwell. Have a read and follow up with any questions you may have for your candidates. You must post your ballots off asap as voting closes the 21st.
Pop over to Sky's page for all the answers in her comments.

09/10/2023

Itā€™s a busy time, If you havenā€™t already, fill in your ballot papers and post them.
Australia Post can be a little slow so I suggest by the end of this week.
So far, Banksia Ward have returned 18.49% and Jarrah Ward 19.51%.
Come on, we can do so much better.

Photos from Vic. Park Collective's post 02/10/2023

Here's some additional information on our candidates in Banksia Ward, thanks to Vic Park Collective, the candidates from will be on the 11th October, you can get free tickets here, https://fb.me/e/1dNLaRbkS

01/10/2023

You should all have your ballot papers by now (if you don't then check with the Council or AEC).
You really should post your completed ballots by the 16th October, as Election Day is the 21st.
You can also vote at the Town's administration building on that day.
There have been some changes and you can use preferential voting now, so you can number your candidates, but you don't have too. We have 3 candidates for Mayor, 7 in Banksia Ward and 6 in Jarrah Ward.
There are a few current councillors running for re election, to help you decide wether to vote for them have a look at how they've performed on council, one has been on council for 16 years, is it time for a change? One of these councillors has made some very controversial comments about gay and trans people, how do you feel about that?
We then have a bunch of new (and not so new) faces running, 2 in Banksia Ward have run before. Check out all of their campaigns, how are they running these? Are they out and about with the community, having important conversations? Do they live locally? What involvement have they had within the community? What are their goals and aspirations for the town?
Finally, we have 3 candidates for Mayor, the Mayor's role is to preside over meetings, act as a representative for the town and lead the council's strategic plans. Again, look into these candidates, ask questions, google them, if possible watch their performances or ask to meet with them or at least ask questions via their social media or email.
The voter turn out for LG elections is so low and this is disappointing due to the fact that local government is often your first point of call and their decisions really impact on you and your neighbourhood.

Our final candidate for Mayor, is current Mayor Karen Vernon, she was elected as a councillor in 2017 and then Mayor in 2019. She lists some of her achievements during this time as.... Keeping rates and spending down, Successful advocacy for Millers Crossing, Securing the restoration of Edward Millen House, Upgrades to Town facilities and Underground Power. I think what we all need to be aware of is that the Mayor is one Vote (can make the deciding vote if there is a tie) the Mayors role is to lead the Council and preside over Council meetings. From my experience on Council I found the Mayor to be an Authoritarian leader. I want to look at little deeper at some of her achievements listed, 1) budget and rates cuts, of course we all want to pay less rates, however there is another price to pay when you cut these and that's services and projects. 2) Millers Crossing, along with many community members I had been a strong advocate for saving Millers Crossing and my motion to purchase all of this land was not supported by the Mayor and some other Councillors. To be a successful leader you have to build positive relationships with community leaders and politicians, putting aside personal views and making compromises. Presiding over Council meetings is difficult and certainly not a job I would want! Sadly our council meetings are often disrupted by a core group of attendees and it is the Mayor's role to mange this behaviour, our meetings are often combative (and do at times feel like a courtroom) I do not have all the answers for addressing these behaviours, but I believe the current situation is off-putting to the general public. I recognise that the Mayor is hard working and has good intentions for the Town, but I personally feel there is a need for improvement in working collaboratively with councillors, colleagues and community. You should all have your ballots by now, fill them in and post them back.

Photos from Cr Daniel Minson - Victoria Park's post 27/09/2023

I have been asked to look a little more into the other candidates for Mayor for our upcoming LG elections. So here we go.... Daniel Minson is a new face on the block and he is running for both council and Mayor. His profile is more focused on getting on Council in Jarrah Ward with little information about his run for Mayor. I met with Daniel a few weeks ago and he seems to be approachable and reasonable, he has been attending council meetings quietly, watching proceedings. As you will see in his flier, his main focus is about planning and infrastructure to accommodate the Town's population growth. Some have raised concerns that he is anti-development? I can't answer this question (but I'm sure he can). He is another candidate who mentions security patrols, something I raised concerns about in other posts re the costs and also the role of local government vs the role of state government. Daniel is the alternative for Mayor if the other two don't float your boat.

25/09/2023

Just doing some fact checking šŸ˜³
This is the flier for mayoral candidate Vince Maxwell.
There are a lot of claims and a lot of promises šŸ¤ž
Before you post your votes, ask questions and do your own research.
Votes should be posted by October 16th or returned to council administration on October 21st.

21/09/2023

We have three candidates for Mayor at the Local Government Council Elections. You've probably heard of Karen Vernon (incumbent) and Vince Maxwell (ex councillor) here's Daniel Minson ( a new face ).

21/09/2023

Youā€™ll be seeing a lot of posts that look something like this now that ballots are arriving.
All of the candidates have written their spiels which are there with the ballots.
Have a good read and if youā€™re unsure ask questions of the candidates, for incumbent candidates have a look at their voting records too
Also have a look at how candidates are running their campaigns, are they talking to people? Approachable? Enthusiastic?
Most importantly Vote!

21/09/2023

I absolutely adore this photo of Lindsay Miles for Banksia Ward Vic Park and Sky Croeser for Victoria Park Jarrah Ward. Two amazing candidates for our upcoming Town of Victoria Park Local Government Elections.
Positive, Proactive, Progressive Women, just what we need more of on Council.
Ballots will be hitting your letterboxes soon, so vote 1 !

How to vote 19/09/2023

It's a busy time voting wise, with the Voice Referendum on October 14th and then Local Government Council Elections on the 21st. The referendum vote is compulsory and you will vote traditionally at polling booths. Council elections are a little different, you will receive a ballot in the mail around the end of September and will need to fill it out and post by the 16th October (don't leave it sitting on the kitchen bench), however, you can hand deliver your ballot the Town of Victoria Park admin office on Election Day the 21st October. There have been some changes made to how you can vote, with preferential voting an option. I have included a link that explains it all clearly, including a cute little video. The most important thing is to VOTE!!! We are so lucky to live in a democracy where we can have our say, safely, without persecution on any government level.

How to vote While not compulsory in WA, all electors are encouraged to vote in their local elections. Here's how.

Photos from Banksia Business's post 16/09/2023

Letā€™s dig down into some of the promises made by some of the Mayoral candidates.
One of Vince Maxwellā€™s is toā€¦
ā€œinitiate security patrols to combat crime and antisocial behaviourā€
This is a huge undertaking, it has come up before, but the costs of such patrols are very high. The yearly cost for City of Belmont-Government Eyes on the Street is on average 1.2 million.
Where is this sort of money going to come from when other promises are to push rates down and improve community infrastructure?
There is a lot of information around how we can address crime and anti social behaviour by activating our neighbourhoods and streets.

13/09/2023

Iā€™ve tried to write this post about 5 times now.
Here goesā€¦.. we have 3 Mayoral Candidates
One is the current Mayor, the other an ex Councillor and the third a new face.
Theyā€™re all going to make statements ( see townā€™s website for these ) and promises.
Hereā€™s a few things you need to knowā€¦.
The Mayor has 1 vote ( unless the votes are deadlocked )
The Mayor can not hire and fire people ( they can only in conjunction with the whole of Council hire/fire the CEO )
Any Motions must be presented to the council and be voted on
The Mayor ( as with any member of council ) can not get amongst issues that are deemed to be ā€œoperationalā€ for example they can not direct staff or make immediate decisions about day to day operations of the town.
Yes, they can raise issues with the CEO but to make policy or procedural changes is a process that needs to go through Council.
Therefore the Mayor must work with their colleagues on council and their CEO and senior management. They also must lead by example, build positive relationships with community and government leaders and be prepared to listen and take on board differing views from those around them.
So when you go to cast your important vote think about each of these candidates and how they have or will fulfill this role. And if you donā€™t knowā€¦. Then ask ( people who do know )

Candidate Profiles Ā» Town of Victoria Park 08/09/2023

With the Local Government Elections looming Saturday 21st October (however, ballots will come out earlier in the mail)
I thought it might be good to spend the lead up looking at the candidates and the process.
Local Government Election turn out is usually low (less than 30%) it would be great to see better engagement here.
Local Government is usually the first level of government we encounter, they deal with our local issues, yes, rubbish, roads and rates, but so much more. They can impact our local environment, parks, reserves, small businesses, developments, community grants and so much more. With a total of 16 Candidates (3 for Mayor, 6 for Jarrah Ward and 7 for Banksia Ward) this election is hotly contested. Here is the link to the candidate profiles, where every candidate is required to submit a brief summary of who they are and what their goals are. Have a read and over the next few weeks, we'll delve a little deeper.

Candidate Profiles Ā» Town of Victoria Park Candidate profiles and additional statements will be published here as they are received. You can also view candidate information at the Western Australian Electoral Commission.

FYIā€¦.

At the special council meeting which happened tonight, the recommendation to go forward with the lease with Blackoak to redevelop the Edward Mullen House precinct passed unanimously.

This means the heritage listed house, which was donated to the council 20 years ago and is currently sat empty and surrounded by an electric fence, will be restored to its former glory, and the space will be developed into a mixed use community centred hub.

I know a lot of people in our community are excited to hear that this development will now progress, itā€™s been a long long time waiting! Very exciting to see what happens next šŸ‘€

Congratulations Kendall, so great that we have one of the Blue Trees in our town.

Congratulations Kendall Whyte - Founder and CEO of the Blue Tree Project, and WAā€™s Young Australian of the Year. šŸ‘šŸ‘šŸ‘

Kendall lost her brother to su***de. She is an incredible advocate for improving mental health. Founding the Blue Tree Project to spread the message that ā€˜itā€™s ok to not be okā€™, and to help break down the stigma of mental health across Australia, and the world.

Within just two years, the Blue Tree Project has achieved great things - helping to facilitate better understanding of mental health, while providing free education seminars and creating engaging community events within regional Western Australia. And over 700 blue trees across our country!

Well done Kendall - you are so deserving of this award and so much more. Thank you. šŸ’™
