After two successful programs, we are opening the doors of our Mutual Learning Program starting September 2023!

Are you part of an organisation interested in family and community-based care? Would you like to know more about the transition process by exchanging experiences and ideas with other care practitioners?

Mutual Learning believes in connecting care practitioners worldwide to inspire and mutually transform towards high-quality family and community-based care. We facilitate collaboration, dialogue and the exchange of experiences with an international community via a digital platform and a six-month learning program.

Within the six-month program, know-how, practical experiences and challenges are being shared. Instead of a top-down approach, telling people what to do and how to do it, the participants are invited to think together to shape ideas. The program works according to the philosophy of collaboration and dialogue.

Mutual Learning will start their next program September 2023.
Are you interested in joining? Join the information meeting July 19th (English group: 13.00 GMT, Spanish group: 14.00 GMT) or August 9th (English + Spanish: 14.00 GMT). For more information and registration, visit www.mutuallearningprogram.org or e-mail [email protected].

The Mutual Learning Program is developed by a consortium consisting of Wilde Ganzen, Transform Alliance Africa, Danielle Children's Fund, Cambodian Organization for Living and Temporary-care, KidsCare Kenia, Hope and Homes for Children and Instituto.Kanankil

Our pilot group has just entered module 3 of the Mutual Learning Program. In this module we are going to think on how we could transform together into alternative family and community based care. More specifically, we will:
- Reflect on gatekeeping practices, including preventive care, solid mechanisms for need assessment, alternative family and community based care.
- Look into what transformation means for our organisations, what opportunities we can create together and how we can grow through new challenges.
- Talk about how we can advocate for the rights of children.

In the coming weeks, the group will meet bi-weekly in Zoom to discuss the content they have viewed and conversations they have had on the forum. The Mutual Learning team is looking forward to many new insights and ideas!

Thursday = Mutual Learning Program meeting day! Yesterday we met each other about the first unit of module 2: How to work with families and communities. Central to this session was the impact of institutionalisation and legal framework for those children that are at risk to lose or have lost parental care. After a rich conversation facilitator Otto Sestak defined two main conclusions which we would like to share with you:

- Institutions are with us. They serve a function and we need to see what we can do the replace them in that function.
- We need to offer a wide range of services based on the needs of the child. Not bend the needs of the child based on the services. We need to make sure the family can choose for THEMSELVES.

We would love to hear your voice too! Interested in the Mutual Learning Program? See www.mutuallearningprogram.org for more information and next year’s programs.

Last week we had the third live session of the Mutual Learning Program. The session was attended by more than 20 participants from 14 countries all over the world. Harlene Anderson, psychologist and cofounder of the Postmodern Collaborative Approach, joined the conversation. We talked about the importance of dialogue and how to keep the conversation going.

Some of the thoughts shared by our Mutual Learning group:
- The way we interact and engage with people is very important, especially as a care provider
- Everyone is the expert of their own life
- Always put the relationship first
- We want unseen to be seen and unheard to be heard
- You cannot change a person, you can only change yourself and how you do it

‘This session was inspiring and an eye opener in modifying our thought process’ - participant George
