18.1.2023 - Wednesday ✨Latest Crypto & Financial Market Recap 📈
On Wall Street, all eyes were on US companies quarterly earnings reports. Both the Dow and the S&P 500 ended the day lower on reports that Goldman Sachs had a bigger-than-expected 69% drop in fourth-quarter profit.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 391.76 points, or 1.14%, to 33,910.85, the S&P 500 lost 8.12 points, or 0.20%, to 3,990.97 and the Nasdaq Composite added 15.96 points, or 0.14%, to 11,095.11.
Earlier in the day, data released showed that China’s GDP for 2022 beat expectations although annualized GDP growth for 2022 of 3% was far below the official target of about 5.5%. Excluding a 2.2% expansion after Covid-19 first hit in 2020, it was the worst showing in nearly half a century.
In foreign exchange market, the Dollar weakened against the Japanese Yen yesterday amid expectations of a possible policy shift by the Bank of Japan. Japan's decades of ultra-low interest rates may reach a turning point today, when the BOJ decision is expected following a two-day meeting.
While other central banks have been raising interest rates to control inflation, the BOJ has kept long-term rates around zero. A shift could possibly end its stimulatory policy called yield curve control (YCC). If the Japanese central bank unwinds its yield curve control, it is likely that Japanese yields would increase further. That could make Japanese debt more attractive compared with U.S. Treasuries after accounting for foreign exchange hedges. Japanese investors may then sell U.S. treasuries or be less likely to purchase them.
USD/JPY extended recent weakness and was last down 0.3%, with market participants braced for sharp moves when the BOJ concludes its meeting.
The Dollar Index rose 0.2%. As a result, gold prices on Tuesday fell from a more than eight-month peak hit in the previous session on hopes that the U.S. Federal Reserve would adopt a less aggressive approach to rate hikes going forward.
Spot gold fell 0.7% to $1,904.87/oz after hitting its highest since the end of April on Monday. COMEX gold futures settled down 0.6% at $1,909.90/oz. Spot silver slipped 2.1% to $23.88/oz.
In the energy market, crude oil prices rose on hopes that China’s re-opening could increase fuel demand. Brent crude oil futures rose $1.46, or 1.7%, to settle at $85.92, while WTI crude climbed 32 cents, or 0.4%, to $80.18.
In cryptocurrencies, Bitcoin has so far gained over 26%, gaining 22% in the past week alone, putting in on course for its best month since October 2021. It was last up 0.6% at $21,367.37. Ether has also risen, by 29% this year.
Since the beginning of 2023, green shoots have begun to grow in the crypto space. On the back of lower-than-expected inflation data from the US and the hints of fewer monetary tightening measures by the Federal Reserve, the entire cryptocurrency market capitalization has again risen above $1 trillion.

17.1.2023 - Tuesday ✨Latest Crypto & Financial Market Recap 📈
Stock markets, excluding those in the US, extended the new year rally yesterday as optimism over the global economy, inflation coming under control and China's reopening offset concerns the Bank of Japan (BoJ) might temper its super-sized stimulus policy at a pivotal meeting this week. U.S. markets were closed yesterday for Martin Luther King Jr. Day, a national holiday.
All eyes were on the Bank of Japan. The Japanese Yen climbed to its highest since May over rumors the BoJ might hold an emergency meeting on Monday as it struggles to defend its new yield ceiling in the face of massive selling, sending USD/JPY to a seven-month low.
The BoJ's official two-day meeting ends tomorrow, and speculation is rife it will make changes to its yield curve control policy given the market has pushed 10-year yields above its new ceiling of 0.5%.
The BoJ bought almost 5 trillion yen ($39.12 billion) of bonds last Friday in its largest daily operation on record, yet 10-year yields still ended the session up at 0.51%. Early yesterday, the bank offered to buy another 1.3 trillion yen of JGBs, but the yield stuck at 0.51%.
The BoJ's uber-easy policy has acted as a sort of anchor for yields globally, while dragging down the Japanese Yen. Were it to abandon the policy, it would put upward pressure on yields across developed markets and most likely see the Yen surge further.
The Dollar has been undermined by falling U.S. bond yields as market participants bet the Federal Reserve can be less aggressive in raising rates, given inflation has clearly turned the corner.
USD/JPY fell to a more than seven-month low on Monday, as market sentiment was dominated by expectations that the BoJ would abandon or make further tweaks to its yield control policy. In the meantime, the Dollar Index recovered from a 7-month low to 102.3.
Commodities which had rallied last week, dipped on Monday. The drop in yields and the Dollar benefited gold, which jumped 2.9% last week, but slipped 0.2% to $1,916/oz overnight.
Crude oil prices slid but held near the year's highs as a rise in Covid cases clouded the prospects for a surge in demand as China reopens its economy. Brent crude fell 25 cents, or 0.29%, to $85.03 a barrel, while West Texas Intermediate crude oil was down 14 cents, or 0.18%, at $79.72 a barrel.
Cryptocurrencies have rallied strongly since the start of 2023, as speculators increasingly anticipate the Federal Reserve will ease up on its aggressive rate hikes to tame inflation. The higher rates are, the more attractive it is for investors to park their money in an interest-bearing savings account rather than putting it into risky assets.
Bitcoin broke through the $21,000 mark early yesterday from a low of $16,000 at the start of the year. Its market capitalization surged almost 25% in a week to $21,069 from around the $17,000-mark one week ago.
Ethereum too is up 20% in a week to $1,564, hitting a two-month high over the weekend. Solana made the biggest gains with a 62% rise in the week, to $23.31.
On Monday, the entire market capitalization stood at $1.02 trillion, a rise of around 1.2% in 24 hours, according to data from Coingecko.
The capital inflow into the cryptocurrency sector comes amid renewed investor confidence that the US Federal Reserve is succeeding in taming inflation without upsetting the economy into a recession.

16.1.2023 - Monday ✨Latest Crypto & Financial Market Recap 📈
The S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite closed at their highest levels in a month last Friday, with US bank shares rising following their quarterly results, which kicked off the earnings season.
Giving support to the market Friday was the University of Michigan's survey which showed an improvement in U.S. consumer sentiment, with the one-year inflation outlook falling in January to the lowest level since the spring of 2021.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 112.64 points, or 0.33%, to 34,302.61, the S&P 500 gained 15.92 points, or 0.40%, to 3,999.09 and the Nasdaq Composite added 78.05 points, or 0.71%, to 11,079.16.
The S&P 500 closed at its highest level since December 13, while the Nasdaq closed at its highest level since December 14. For the week, the S&P 500 gained 2.7% and the Dow rose 2%. The Nasdaq increased 4.8% in its biggest weekly percentage gain since Nov. 11.
In FX markets, the Japanese Yen extended its surge last Friday, on speculation the Bank of Japan (BoJ) will revise its ultra-loose monetary policy, while the Dollar edged up against most other major currencies, rising off of a seven-month low.
USD/JPY fell 1.06% to 127.92 yen, adding 2.4% from last Thursday’s close after the Yomiuri newspaper said BoJ officials would review the side effects of the central bank's yield curve control policy at their meeting this week. The BoJ is the only major central bank in the G7 clinging to stimulus while most central banks globally are deep into rate-hiking campaigns. But signs of stickier inflation and a possible rise in Japan's mostly stagnant wages have convinced some market participants that its yield curve control could be revised, or even abandoned, as early as this week, opening the door to a stronger Yen.
The Dollar Index hit its lowest level since June 6 last week following the US CPI report, firming up expectations that the Federal Reserve will slow the pace of its interest rate hikes. EUR/USD was last down 0.2% at 1.0828, easing off a fresh nine-month high. GBP/USD rose 0.12% to 1.22275.
In commodities, signs of softening inflation in the U.S. helped oil bulls, though rising crude oil prices on their own might ultimately lead to higher inflation. WTI, or West Texas Intermediate, crude for February delivery closed at $80.07 last Friday having rose 8.4% for the week, and completely erasing losses from a week ago.
Brent crude for March delivery closed at $85.49 last Friday. The intraday peak for Brent was $85.34.
For the week, Brent gained 8.5%, making up for all of the previous week's drop, like WTI.
Gold neared a nine-month high last Friday, approaching the key $1,950/oz resistance. Gold for February delivery on COMEX closed at $1,923.35/oz - up $22.90, or 1.2%, on the day. Its session high of $1,925.25 was the loftiest for a front-month contract since the April 25 peak of $1,935.50.
The spot price of gold settled at $1,920.13 - up $23.22, or 1.2%, on the day. Spot gold’s intraday peak was $1,921.97- also the highest since April 25.
Gold has rallied over the past three months as receding inflation drove bond yields and the Dollar lower on expectations that the Federal Reserve will be a lot less aggressive with rate hikes this year and might even wrap its monetary tightening well before the end of 2023.
In cryptocurrencies, Bitcoin spiked above the $21,000 mark on Saturday. This is the first time since November 8, 2022, that Bitcoin has crossed $20,000 and following a 11-days of gains.
Bitcoin rose 5.58% to $21,229 over the weekend, adding $1,286 to its closing on Friday. It is up 27.6% from the year's low of $16,496 on January 1. Similarly, Ether surged 7% to $1,598.45 on Saturday, adding $148 to its previous close.
The current surge in cryptocurrencies value comes after the U.S. headline CPI dropped to 6.5% in December, down from 7.1% in November. Last week’s surge in price action is certainly encouraging, rising hope of that the absolute bottom is in for crypto prices.
U.S. markets will be closed today for the Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday.

12.1.2023 - Thursday ✨Latest Crypto & Financial Market Recap 📈
The S&P 500 closed up more than 1% while the Dollar was little changed overnight as market participants bet that tonight’s U.S. inflation data would allow the Federal Reserve to slow the pace of interest rate hikes.
The December's CPI is expected to show annual inflation at 6.5%, down from 7.1% in November, and current expectations are for a 25-basis points rate increase at the February meeting after a 50 basis point hike in December.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 268.91 points, or 0.8%, to 33,973.01, the S&P 500 gained 50.36 points, or 1.28%, to 3,969.61 and the Nasdaq Composite added 189.04 points, or 1.76%, to 10,931.67.
While the Dollar Index was virtually unchanged, EUR/USD briefly hit a seven-month high at 1.0754 but held within a narrow range as traders avoided big moves ahead of the inflation data. USD/JPY rose to 132.45, while GBP/USD was last trading at 1.2147, down 0.07% on the day.
In crude oil futures, WTI crude settled up 3.05% at $77.41 per barrel and Brent settled at $82.67, up 3.21% on the day. Both benchmarks had settled at their highest levels since December 30, with WTI up for a fifth consecutive day for the first time since October and Brent up for a third day in a row for the first time since December.
Crude oil shrugged off early losses to rally 3% as hopes for an improved global economic outlook and concern over the impact of sanctions on Russian crude output outweighed a massive surprise build in U.S. crude stocks.

10.1.2023 - Tuesday ✨Latest Crypto & Financial Market Recap 📈
Wall Street gave up broad earlier gains to finish mixed ahead of an expected speech by Fed Chair Jerome Powell on Tuesday and inflation data on Thursday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 112.96 points, or 0.34%, to 33,517.65, the S&P 500 lost 2.99 points, or 0.08%, to 3,892.09 and the Nasdaq Composite added 66.36 points, or 0.63%, to 10,635.65.
Money markets were pricing in a 25% chance of a half-point U.S. rate hike in February, down from around 50% a month ago. Market participants will look to Thursday's CPI data for further clues as to the Fed's next move.
The Dollar slid to a seven-month low against the Euro overnight as traders bet recent economic data would prompt the Federal Reserve to slow the pace of interest rate hikes, while riskier currencies benefited from China reopening its borders.
EUR/USD was up to its highest level since June 9 at 1.0761 before settling at 1.0728, adding to last Friday's 1.17% increase. GBP/USD surged to as high as 1.2195, building on Friday's 1.5% rally, while the Swiss Franc jumped 0.82% to 0.9167, its strongest since early March. AUD/USD rose to $0.6950, hitting its highest level since August 30, while NZD/USD rallied to as high as 0.6416.
The moves continued the trend lower for the Dollar, which in the final three months of 2022 posted its biggest quarterly loss in 12 years. That was driven mainly by market participants' belief that the Fed will not raise rates beyond 5%, from its current range of 4.25%-4.50%, as inflation and growth cool.
The Fed raised interest rates by 50 basis points last month after delivering four consecutive 75 basis-point hikes last year, but said it was likely to keep interest rates higher for longer to tame inflation.
Two separate reports last Friday painted a picture of an economy that is growing and adding jobs, but where overall activity is tilting into recession territory, prompting traders to sell the dollar against a range of currencies.
Last Friday's monthly employment report showed a bigger-than-expected increase in the number of workers and a slowing in wage growth - welcome news for the U.S. central bank.
A report from the Institute for Supply Management showed activity in the service sector contracted for the first time in 2-1/2 years in December.
The Dollar Index was at a 7-month low, last down 0.81% at 103.033. The index tumbled 1.15% last Friday as investors shifted into riskier assets.
Gold prices cooled slightly after hitting an eight-month high on Monday, as a weak Dollar's boost was offset by Federal Reserve officials reiterating their aggressive stance against inflation. Spot gold rose 0.3% to $1,870.45/oz after hitting its highest since May 9 earlier in the session at $1,881.5. COMEX gold futures settled up 0.4% at $1,877.80/oz. Spot silver fell 0.5% to $23.69/oz.
WTI crude recently rose 1.41% to $74.81 per barrel and Brent was at $79.73, up 1.48% on the day.
Bitcoin has languished in the $16,000 trading range for almost three weeks, but Monday saw a break-out which spiked to $17,406. Ethereum, also saw a reversal, up 4.26% to $1,344.74. According to Coinbase Institutional report author David Duong, the market outlook for Bitcoin suggests that a successful push past the $17,100 mark might put the digital asset on track toward the next technical level around $17,800.
Of the top 10 blue-chip cryptocurrencies, Cardano performed strongest and saw a hike of almost 17% to as high as $0.346 before easing to $0.316.
The entire cryptocurrency market capitalization increased by 3% in the past 24 hour. However, developments in the coming weeks may affect the price of cryptocurrencies.
Market participants will be looking at the upcoming payout from the Mt Gox crypto-exchange rehabilitation plan settlement. Traders will also be monitoring an upcoming report on US inflation. The Federal Reserve's monetary tightening polices have been a big driver in pushing Bitcoin's price down by 64% in the last year.
