The president also nominated Marine Corps Lt. Gen. Eric Smith to serve as the next deputy commandant for combat development and integration (CD&I) and commanding general of Marine Corps Combat Development Command (MCCDC). This position would be left open once current deputy commandant Lt. Gen. David Berger is confirmed to serve as the next commandant of the Marine Corps.

Smith currently serves as the commanding general of III Marine Expeditionary Force (III MEF) and commander of U.S. Marine Corps Forces Japan. In this capacity, he is at the forefront of Marine Corps experimentation with new concepts such as expeditionary advance base operations and new equipment such as the F-35B Joint Strike Fighter stationed in Japan and operating aboard USS Wasp (LHD-1).

Smith was commissioned into the Marine Corps in 1987 and has commanded 1st Battalion, 5th Marines; commanded 8th Marine Regiment, including a one-year deployment to Afghanistan; served as director of the Capability Development Directorate under CD&I; commanded Marine Corps Forces Southern Command; served as assistant deputy commandant for plans, policies and operations; and served as commanding general of 1st Marine Division.

Additionally, the president nominated Air Force Maj. Gen. Eric Fick to serve as the next director of the Joint Strike Fighter Program, where Fick currently serves as the deputy director. Fick commissioned into the Air Force in 1990 and has served as program executive officer for fighters and bombers; program executive officer for intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance (ISR) and special operations forces; commander of the Advanced Combat Systems Group at the Air Force Rapid Capabilities Office; and operations officer and commander of the 46th Test Squadron. Eric Fick delivered remarks to Defense officials and industry experts at the McAleese 11th Annual Defense Programs Conference on 4 March. The PEO focused his remarks on the F-35 Program’s strategic priorities, what we have accomplished to date and where we are going in the future. He discussed the ‘-ilities’, or the capability, availability, affordability, agility, and deployability of the F-35 Enterprise. Fick underscored the importance of our partners and people and said the strength of the program is the war-fighters who are figuring out how to better fight, fly and maintain the F-35 and then provide that important feedback to the program. Air Force Lt. Gen. Eric Fick assumed the watch from VADM Mat Winter as the program executive officer for the F-35 program in a July 11 ceremony at the US Navy Memorial, the Navy reports. Lt. Gen. Fick was previously the deputy program EO.

Fifty-eight more military sites have been identified where levels of harmful chemicals used in firefighting foam have been detected in groundwater or drinking water sources, from Elmendorf Air Force Base and Fort Richardson in Alaska to Fort Eustis in Virginia, reports Military Times. This brings the total to 175 military installations and sites nationwide that are known to be contaminated by fluorinated compounds known as PFAS, or polyfluoroalkyl substances. The Environmental Working Group’s map here includes information about the contamination.

At a hearing on Friday, a House Energy and Commerce subcommittee focused on threats to the US electric grid, reports The Hill, as lawmakers look to get ahead of the issue. Trump administration officials have cited threats from Russia and China against the electric grid.

Turkey takes delivery of a Russian S-400 missile defense system, reports CNBC, angering US officials and potentially triggering sanctions from Washington. A group of US senators expressed disappointment with Turkey, reports The Claremore Daily Progress. “Turkey cannot have both Russian and American defense equipment sitting side by side,” reads a statement. Defense News reports the Trump administration has not yet reacted.
