At the time of the Vietnam War, the Woodman's Pal, which was issued in air-crew survival kits, was designated “Survival Tool, Type IV” and was commonly known by soldiers as the Jungle Fighting Knife.
Vietnam veteran, Tom Drake, recently shared with us a photo of his "MIL-S-8642" that he brought back from the war and donated to a local history museum.

During World War II, the Marine Corps operated “PB” (patrol bomber) Mitchell aircrafts, used extensively in the South Pacific to heckle and attack Japanese bases as well as intercept enemy shipping. Here is a photo of a medium bomber crewman from VMB-611 wearing his LC-14-B, Woodman’s Pal.
