I believe this to be RED FEATHER CLOVER Trifolium Ruben's. Ive researched it and it's native range is Central and Southern Europe. I found several small groups of it in the Ryders Mere area of Pelsall yesterday. The area was an opencast mine in the 90's, and Ive never seen it before despite the fact I've visited the spot several times a year since it was redeveloped. Apparently its also a 'garden species' and I wondered if it might be an escapee. Anyone? Either way it's a beautiful plant (the flowering heads being 2 inches plus) and judging by the speed of its distribution I have a feeling its going to become a fixture in the area.
