S2E4: The Politicization of Climate Security
The Intelligence Jumpstart with Jane DOE | The Politicization of Climate Security (transistor.fm)
“And I think it's important to put that [we] try to remove the partisanship … that has accompanied it … it goes to that first question if climate change is a risk to national security. Many of us think it is. I would say most people who understand climate change agree with this, just because of the enormous and wide pathways on which security hinges on stability. But if you take that, then any effort to minimize either understanding or action to address that risk, we would see it as a security risk.”
Hear the conversation between Jane DOE and Dr. Rod Schoonover as they discuss the impact of climate change on U.S. national security, the science behind Capitol Hill testimonies, and the security risk of politicizing a global science-based security issue.

At NIU, we're celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month by recognizing the contributions and influence the Hispanic Community has made on the history, culture, and achievements of the United States.
Thank you, Angelina Maldonado, for your contributions to the Intelligence Community, the national security mission, and for your continued service to our nation!
From the Desk of the NIU Chief Diversity Officer, Lawrence Pace,
Why is it important to remember September 11th?
On this date each year, many recall their own experiences during the harrowing events of September 11, 2001. Most faculty, staff, and students on a university campus know the date as a historical event, rather than a personal memory. NIU is committed to the promise of remembrance.
For months following September 11, 2001, people came together to grieve family, friends, and strangers. More than 22 years later, we still do. Sometimes called Patriots Day or Day of Remembrance, September 11 has become an annual day for many Americans to remember, reflect, honor, and mourn.
On this day, may we honor the memory of the innocent victims we lost and carry on the legacy of the selfless heroes who served our Nation on September 11 and in its aftermath. May we also recognize the members of our intelligence and counterterrorism communities who worked with dedication and determination to deliver justice to Ayman al-Zawahiri, the emir of al-Qaeda and a key planner of this and other cruel attacks against our people. The brutality of the terrorist attacks against the World Trade Center and Pentagon will never be forgotten, and for many of us, not even released from our immediate thoughts.
I invite all to observe this day with service; you can find opportunities in your community by visiting https://lnkd.in/eTbhp8xG.
Unity is what makes us who we are as Americans - it is our greatest strength. When we come together on this day, and every day, we demonstrate that even in the darkness, America remains a bright beacon of light and hope for the world.

S2E2: Power of Metaphor
Jane DOE speaks to Josh Kerbel, NIU Professor of Practice in the Office of Research, about the power of language. The metaphors we use in the IC and the way we describe U.S. national security threats determine how we approach those threats. In a post-Cold War environment, the mechanistic language that makes up the analytic lexicon does not address the complex threats of the modern world.
