AN OPEN REMINDER TO OUR FELLOW MUSLIM AND A DEAR BROTHER, SENATOR ROBIN PADILLA, ON HIS FILLING OF SENATE BILL NO. 449 (PROPOSED CIVIL UNION ACT) OTHERWISE KNOWN AS “A BILL SEEKING TO INSTITUTIONALIZE CIVIL UNIONS OF SAME S*X COUPLES”

Assalamu Alaikum Wa Rahmatullahi Ta’ala Wabarakatu.

Being a fellow Muslim, we are obligated to remind our dear brother in Faith, Senator Robin Padilla, to include ourselves as taught to us in Islam, in the light of this “controversial” Senate Bill.

وَذَكِّرْ فَإِنَّ ٱلذِّكْرَىٰ تَنفَعُ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ
Wa zakkir fa innaz zikraa tanfa’ul mu’mineen
And remind (by preaching the Quran, O Muhammad SAW) for verily,
the reminding profits the believers. (Qur’an Surah 51, Verse 55)
[translated by Muhsin Khan]

All human beings need reminders… knowing something is not enough by itself… Reminders offers positive encouragement and can be a powerful tool for influencing behavior. Because it can bring to light the path that we may have relegated to the back of our minds, revives knowledge and rekindles the original spirit associated with it…

In Islam, man’s basic tendency to be heedless and forgetful is illustrated on account of creation as provided in the Qur’an (Islam’s Sacred Book). But God also promised to send reminders in the form of prophets and scriptures, reminding humankind of the path to goodness in this worldly life and the hereafter.

Verses of the Qur’an remind us of Allah’s blessings and mercy, of the real meaning and purpose of creation, of our responsibility and accountability towards them. Repeated reflections over these reminders help us to avoid being distracted from what is important and ideal in life… In essence, it keeps us away from failure…

As a faith deeply embraced and cherished by us, Muslim Filipinos, in this part of the country, Islam particularly upholds sacred injunctions on s*x and marriage… Marriage act as an outlet for s*xual needs and regulates it so one does not become a slave to his/her own desire. Islam regards s*x as natural and good, but restricts it to the partners of marriage so as ensure the responsibility for its consequences… The conjugal relationship between a man and a woman becomes lawful through marriage. Marriage provides spiritual, physical, emotional and psychological companionship. The Qur’an has described this relationship between men and women, which brings love, harmony, trust and compassion, in the most moving and eloquent terms:

“Among His signs is [the fact] that He has created spouses for you Among yourselves so that you may dwell in tranquility with them, And He has planted love and mercy between you, in that are signs for people who reflect”.

The Qur’an further provides that:

“They are a garment for you and you are a garment for them…And the believers, men and women, are protecting friends of one another, they enjoin the right and forbid the wrong, and they establish worship…and they obey Allah and His Messenger; as for those, Allah will have mercy on them”…

Only between men and women does Islam recognizes the value of s*x and companionship and advocates marriage as the foundation for families and channeling the fulfillment of a base need. In Islam, marriage is highly valued and regarded as being HALF OF ONE’S FAITH according to a Hadith (Sayings) of Prophet Mohammad (SAW).

In strict compliance with the provisions of the Holy Qur’an and Hadith of the Prophet (SAW), Islam considers same s*x marriage a punishable act and a sin… This is because it clashes with the natural order which God purposely created human beings as it ultimately brings destruction of the family and the sanctity and institution of marriage.

The Qur’an describes that everything has been created in pairs which complement one another. Pairing a male and a female is thus part of human nature and purports the natural order. Marriage and family are the accepted way in Islam for a person’s emotional, psychological and physical needs to be met.

The Qur’an further describes the husband/wife relationship as one of love, tenderness and support. The institution of marriage is considered “the foundation of Islamic society, the natural state in which all people have been created to live” …

For our love to our fellow Muslim and a dear brother in Faith, Senator Robin Padilla, we are raising our prayers to the All-Knowing and Merciful Allah that He may shower His Guidance and Compassion to guide us all to the Right Path….Ameen.
