The Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, Simon Coveney, TD, today announced FinalBend as the winner of Enterprise Ireland’s Student Entrepreneur of the Year Award at a ceremony in University College Cork.

FinalBend is an innovative, sustainable affordable sportswear company, based in Cork founded by University College, Cork student and Quercus Scholar, Emma Coffey.

Speaking at the awards ceremony, Minister Coveney said: "The quality of entries is a credit to the student entrepreneurs, their academic supervisors and their institutions. Today’s awards celebrate the thriving entrepreneurial spirit in the third-level sector in Ireland.”

Other awards presented to student entrepreneurs at the ceremony included:

▶ The Cruickshank High Achieving Merit Award presented to AblatePure from University of Limerick which has developed a medical device that can be used as part of a new breast cancer treatment method, enabling greater cosmetic outcomes for patients.

▶ The Grant Thornton Ireland High Achieving Merit Award presented to MicroDoc from Trinity College Dublin which automates medical paperwork for doctors and their administrative staff.

▶ The Local Enterprise Offices High Achieving Merit Award presented to GoPlugable from Dundalk Institute of Technology and Queen's University Belfast, which is creating a marketplace for private Electric Vehicle (EV) chargers by connecting home EV chargers in a common platform where EV users can share access to their home chargers with other users.

John Mulvihill, a University of Limerick lecturer in Biomedical Engineering, received The Enterprise Ireland Academic Award, for his valuable contribution as a third-level project supervisor.
