The past week has been exhausting, arduous and intense with the United Nations General Assembly and Climate Week. However, it was also very fulfilling, fascinating, inspiring and empowering.

I learned so much and looking forward to do more actions on the ground. More work on harmonizing the efforts on the interconnectedness of climate, nature, food and nutrition security.

As we push for better nutrition as not only a human right but an economic right, we continue to work on nutrition financing. The Power of HER: Women Transforming Leadership Paradigms.

Gender diversity and inclusion have become significant topics in leadership. Adding to this macro trend is the ASEAN region’s diverse cultures. We discussed about barriers and challenges on leadership positions, home dynamics, choices, policies, women supporting each other, informing the men and bringing them as allies and champions to reminding ourselves to “take it easy” as woman can definitely have it all but not all at the same time. We have our own seasons.

I am very happy that I have a great support system in where we support hiring single mothers.
important for me is being part of the WomenBizPh network of CEOs and business owners. My best support system.

A privilege to share the panel with these women:

In today’s world that everything is fast, instant gratification, overnight success aiming for the next big unicorn : “It’s not enough to be successful, we need to find our relevance in this fast changing world.” Our little unique relevance in making this world a better place to live in.

Honored to be a speaker in the ASEAN Future Generation Business Forum, speaking about the future of ASEAN’s food producer: Securing Food Security and Nutrition of the future 1B ASEAN Population. Who will grow tomorrow’s food? ASEAN is needing 40% more food in 2050 in the midst of climate crisis, inflation, aging farmers, depleting soil health, growing population and more.

Thank you also for the award : Youth Achievements Record holder, the inaugural award of ASEAN Summit for the Future Generation.

My heart is full, soul is again on fire seeing and meeting so many people trying to make One ASEAN solid and stronger starting with the young ones.

Terima Kasih! Maraming Salamat!

An inspirational gathering at home that lasted past midnight of dining and laughing. We are so honored for hosting a Korean actor and producer D**g Gyun who is incredibly smart and funny. A little trivia, he studied Space Engineering and was supposed to work in NASA. However, life brought him to acting and owning a production company instead. He helped in casting the famous Squid Game and acted in 41 Korean movies. He will be acting on his first movie in the Philippines promoting Bohol called “Sweet Escape” with Arci Muñoz that is coming out soon. He speaks so many languages too, a polygot.

More so, he ate all the Filipino food we served and slurped my all time favorite “bulanglang or laswa in Ilonggo or law-oy in Bisaya”.

We learned so much from you, D**g Gyun. Your entrepreneurial insights, kindness and humility are second to none.

Definitely more exciting work for this bunch 😍❤️🦋

I was so inspired by the 3 winners of AGREA’s Young Agri-Laureate Awardees (YALA) from Davao and Marawi.

Sittie Asia M. Mai from Marawi won the Young Agri-innovator Award. Their house was demolished after the Marawi siege and their family relocated and found solace in a rice farming village. She started learning about mushroom from a lady soldier who helped her how to grow mushroom using rice straws considered as farm wastes which are usually burnt after rice harvesting. They started using these farm wastes to grow mushroom. Currently, she trained women and youth in their community to grow mushroom as well as process the products into powder to make healthy crackers. I tasted their crackers, it was so good.

Kriza Faye Calumba won the Young Agri-scientist Award. She utilizes durian rind that is usually being thrown away as wastes to develop the fermentation of beer with probiotics. She has been utilizing more local fruits and develop their own yogurt which is now being served in their tea shop called The Tea Culture PH in Davao.

Benzone Kennedy Franes Sepe won the Young Farmer Award. He is the first Filipino who have successfully grown apple in the Philippines. Coming from a farming family, he was discouraged to go into farming. He forged his way to continue his passion in agriculture. His apple farm in Davao is now the first accredited learning site for apple production of the Department of Agriculture- Agriculture Training Institute (DA-ATI). It also serves as a farm tourism destination.

Congratulations to all of you ❤️💕🎊🇵🇭

Thank you very much USAID Green Invest Asia, GIZ, and Sustainable Coconut Steering Committee (SCSC) for convening the 7th Sustainable Coconut Roundtable with the theme “Advancing Resilient and Sustainable Coconut Supply in Southeast Asia”. This time being hosted in the Philippines.

I am seeing so much hope for our coconut farmers! Hope we can go beyond copra. Meeting in person the new Administrator of the Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA) former Agrarian Reform Secretary Bernie Cruz.

More work to build a stronger coconut industry in the Philippines. Different stakeholders were represented to work together to better improve the sector.

Since then, I have been reading about the Coconut Farmers and Industry Trust Fund (CFITF) as stipulated under Republic Act No. 11524. Looking forward that this will be implemented with the farmers at the core.

Apply Now!!!
AGREA Foundation is going to Timor Leste!!!
Thank you to the U.S. Embassy - Dili, Timor-Leste for awarding us this project and Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative.

Agriculture in Southeast Asia is a dynamic sector poised for growth, but the sector faces several important challenges. The UN recently declared that global food production needed to double from 2012 to 2050 to feed the planet, climate change is already affecting Southeast Asia, and supply chains continue to face disruptions. Furthermore, most farmers in the region still face economic insecurity, and the agricultural sector continues to be underfunded.

To empower young leaders to use technology to drive agribusiness in the region, AGREA Foundation in partnership with the Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative, and U.S. Embassy - Dili, Timor-Leste will convene a five-day Advancing Agribusiness Digital Marketing Regional Workshop in Dili, Timor-Leste.

Here are the Regional Workshop Qualifications:
● Must be a YSEALI member and meet the YSEALI membership criteria (20-35 years old). If you are not yet a member, kindly register here: (https://asean.usmission.gov/young-southeast-asian-leaders-initiative/).
● Be a citizen and resident of one of the eleven YSEALI nations: Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor Leste, and Vietnam.
● Open to all applicants regardless of their race, color, religion, socioeconomic status, disability, sexual orientation, and gender identity.
● Be an emerging leader with relevant experience in agribusiness development, entrepreneurship, and other related areas.
● Statement of interest on how the program will benefit the applicants’ professional work and commitment to agribusiness.
● Ability to communicate in English (speaking in public, making presentations, and writing);
● Are interested and able to travel to Timor-Leste to attend the workshop during the dates specified
● Priority will be considered for those who have not attended a YSEALI regional workshop or fellowship.

Be one of the 50 delegates of YSEALI Digital Agribiz 2023! Apply on or before November 25, 2022.

We intentionally work on meaningful opportunities and collaborate with the right support systems.

A remarkable meeting with Ambassador J. Eduardo Malaya and Agriculture Attachè Kristine Yap in the Embassy of the Philippines, The Hauge, Netherlands. Present is also our market-linkage partner Mr. Bert-Jan Ottens from ProFound - Advisers in Development, a company that helps sustainable products from Asia, Latin America and Africa to enter the European market for 30 years. Thank you, Ambassador Saskia de Lang, former Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Embassy of the Netherlands in the Philippines for making this connection and for your kind words of introduction.

Truly a moment I will never forget one day when a project we are working on to export premium sustainable Filipino agricultural products in Europe will happen. It will going to happen for sure. We will not stop until we see our Filipino products on the shelves in Europe, sustainably sourced from our food artisans and farmers, grown in our beautiful soil regeneratively.

For, seven years now, we have been working on turmeric and ginger for premium quality. We supply local processors. We have worked with the best laboratories abroad to make sure our product can compete in the global market in terms of quality and in premium grade. Scientific-based evidence results supported the case. This is not an easy feat, not a cheap investment also in all forms of resources. So much investments , farming experiments including community farm business management has happened, not discounting intensive community organizing including all heartaches on the ground work. Until, currently investing to develop the regenerative farm in Marinduque to make a strong foundation for this AGREA’s venture.

In Europe, they give so much value to ginger and turmeric, not as much as we value these two commodities. These are not even in our list of top high value crops in the country. I wish, someday soon, these two commodities will make to the list and get enough support on a country level plan and implementation.

You may say, why export these two products? These products are great condiments, pharmaceuticals need these two especially those going to neutraceuticals and would better make sense to provide identity also why Philippines was discovered in terms of our spices in the first place. We just never given them enough value. Farmers will also earn more income, produce more to sustain both the needs locally and globally. Bottomline, we are building an exciting brand to honor our farmers and our country 🇵🇭👩🏽‍🌾🧑🏽‍🌾

What an incredible and tangible milestone we have in AGREA Foundation Farm School. We have graduated 2,000 graduates since we started 5 years ago. It seems like yesteday. We are a model farm school in the Philippines changing and leading the way how we teach the smallholder farmers, the youth and women in the farm to see agriculture as a true source of sustainable livelihood, food security champions and climate change mitigators.

More inclusive business opportunities for them together with AGREA Agricultural Systems .

It is truly a gift to share the AGREA Foundation work. So much reason to do more good. The Urban Community and Home Gardens as part of the Urban Food Hives nourishing cities that we started in the midst of the pandemic is now setting global standard on how to provide clear and committed solutions especially in the most difficult times.

We cannot wait for more blogs, documentaries and global coverage under Oxfam USA and Oxfam Pilipinas to share all our best practices. Hope this inspires policy change in the Philippines and the world.

Let’s continue saving people from hunger and malnutrition in urban and peri-urban areas especially in the poorest of the poor communities.

So much lessons learned, challenges that we survived with grace, collaborations made and opportunities to seize. The amount of good things to do is unbelievably unfolding.

Sharing here the importance of building local leadership, champions and advocates from teaching the community stakeholder to dream from nothing but just pure hope to not only survive the pandemic but to thrive.

Currently we are working with 200 women and their families. They graduate from series of training that includes values formation, visioning and dreaming session, technical know-how in agriculture, better nutrition, basics of agribusiness, financial literacy and savings.

Back to groundwork!

So happy to be back on the ground and meet again our amazing women in our thriving urban farm in Payatas with the Puso ng Ama Foundation.

The last time Atom Araullo interviewed me for food security during the pandemic, we were on top of the mountain in Rizal doing the documentary with our farmers. On the same day, right after the interview I went straight to Payatas to meet with Father Paul to see how we can start our Urban Garden Project. I am so excited for this another documentary with Oxfam Pilipinas.

Time flies so fast, we are now in our third cropping and the urban farm has expanding from 40 women to 200 trained women and they are producing their own food organically. They updated me today that they are also earning income from their produce plus they have now an organized Women Urban Food Producers Association.

It all started with a small dream to help them during the pandemic. We all dreamt with them and God knows how this dream unfolds. Our women food producers inspire more people in the community to join, be empowered to have food on their table and more partners to collaborate. They are a model of local leadership and true spirit of Bayanihan.

We in Foundation cannot thank enough all our partners : , Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, Embassy of Australia, Bayer Bahay Kubo Organic, East West Seed Foundation and Puso ng Ama Foundation.
