One of the many projects c2edesigns currently has on site, this was a challenging 2 storey extension which required the removal of the full existing rear wall and installation of a two storey steel frame to support the existing structure and provide stability to the rear of the house.

We're all spending a lot more time in our houses and one question I'm increasingly being asked is regarding wall removals. Are they load bearing and do I need a beam? In this post I have tried to give a brief guide on how you can determine this for yourself, however I also highlight something which is often over looked and that is how walls also provide stability to your building and often need steel wind posts installed to replace the stiffness previously provided by the wall once removed. Note any structural alterations require a building warrant and a competent contractor to carry out the works, so please dont go reaching for the sledge hammer yet.

Ever wondered if your house was constructed over a mine shaft? This was the case for one of C2E's recent clients as can be seen in red hatching shown in the photograph below. This highlights the importance of careful investigation of the existing ground conditions when you are looking to extend you house. This particular project included removing the full rear wall of the house with a flush ceiling between, which posed some engineering challenges that are unique in comparison to your average house extension. Safe to say from the photograph below the work on site is progressing well with new concrete Piles down to the rockbed below, Concrete Ground beams spanning over the existing mine shaft and a new Steel Portal Frame in place of the rear wall. From the Drawing Board to reality!
