This Video is in 3D. Grab a pair of sunglasses and put one lens over your right eye and the scene will pop in 3D. This 3D technique is known as the pulfrich effect which works by varying degrees of motion parallax.

37 years ago I began my career at the San Diego Supercomputer Center as a 3D research artist. My research was dedicated to stereoscopic imaging with the goal to bend space. The shadows in this video pop off the screen in 3D in a bent, warped way.

This video is a screen recording of my augmented reality lens “Glass Cubes” filmed on a piece of black construction paper.

Hypnagogia is a geo-located augmented reality art show in Balboa Park, San Diego, CA. I used Adobe Aero's Geospatial Creator to place 12 kinetic sculptures throughout the park.

INSPIRATION
Hypnagogia is more than an art show; it's a tribute to the profound cultural influence Balboa Park has had on my life. Balboa Park is where I learned to draw, paint, and dance as a child. The sculptures are inspired by hypnagogic dreams where I feel myself turn into spiraling 3D shapes that softly send me to sleep. I used advanced animation techniques in Blender, animating sine waves, the basis for how everything in the universe moves. Sine waves may be the secret to how the motion in my dreams unfolds.

WHAT IT DOES
The exhibition showcases 12 world-anchored kinetic AR/VR sculptures using Google's Geospatial Creator. The artworks are strategically placed in significant locations throughout the park to blend in and enhance the stunning architecture and colorful landscapes. Using your smartphone, you can discover hidden animated sculptures brought to life through cutting-edge AR technology.

HOW I BUILT IT
Over the last few years, I have explored creating kinetic sculptures using virtual and augmented reality. I dove into advanced animation using sine wave functions and PI using Blender. Math calms my mind, and I fall into a meditative state when using numbers with animation.

CHALLENGES I RAN INTO
I had to test the placement of the sculptures repeatedly to make sure they were located in the proper place. Sometimes shadows would go missing, or the models would float too high above the scene.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS I AM PROUD OF
I am proud of this show because I created something original as an artist. The art show is animated and displayed in a way that has never been done before. You can stand inside one of the sculptures or walk around to experience the kinetic works from infinite vantage points.

WHAT I LEARNED
Although I have been using Adobe Aero for a few years, I still learned so much through making the show! What excites me most is that I am ready to make another show in another part of the world.

Behold the Salvador Dali Sticker with Animated Surprise. This sticker featuring the great Surrealist Artist Salvador Dali is more than what meets the eye. Using augmented reality on a smartphone, this sticker comes to life with a famous Dali quote. The animation layers are revealed as a floating digital layer over the sticker using the Adobe Aero Viewer on both IOS and Android.

The Phantom Gallery was a fun project to test out geo-located art with some of my fellow Artist friends or “Virts”, as most of us have never met. We have created VR and AR art shows together virtually for about four years.

The artworks are attached to the buildings with detailed precision using a 3D Google Earth feature in Adobe Aero. Each scene is accessible with a qrcode and no app download is required.

There are ghosts in the park and in the Old Town Cemetery that chase you - a surprising feature that I stumbled upon while animating. Once a scene is loaded, you can walk around the art and experience it from different locations.

On November 1rst & 2nd, the park celebrates Dio de Los Mu***os, which would be a fun time to explore the show.
