INDUSTRIAL ENGINEERING 👷🏻‍♂️💼 | Definition, Subjects, Duties and Subdisciplines

i. What is Industrial Engineering?
Industrial Engineering is an inter-disciplinary profession that is concerned with the analysis, design and optimization of complex processes, systems, or organizations by developing, improving and implementing integrated systems of people, money, knowledge, information, equipment, energy and materials

O It applies science, mathematics, and engineering methods towards one main goal—efficiency.

O It covers a broad spectrum including production planning and control, manufacturing systems and processes, facilities design, human factors, occupational safety, quality control, systems reliability, and systems analysis and design with a strong emphasis on advanced computing.

O It is where engineering meets business.

ii. Fundamental Subjects
The fundamental subjects of industrial engineering usually include:
‣ Algebra (College and Advanced), Trigonometry, Analytical Geometry, Calculus (Differential and Integral), General Chemistry and Physics
‣ General Engineering Subjects (e.g., Statics, Dynamics, Strength of Materials, Thermodynamics, Engineering Management, Computer Fundamentals and Programming)
‣ Advanced Statistics
‣ Industrial Materials and Processes
‣ Method Engineering
‣ Safety Management
‣ Managerial Accounting
‣ Strategic Planning
‣ Engineering Entrepreneurship
‣ Industrial Quality Control
‣ Facilities Design
‣ Ergonomics
‣ Project Feasibility
‣ Project Management
‣ Quality Management Systems
‣ Systems Engineering

iii. What Do Industrial Engineers Do?
O Industrial engineers find ways to eliminate wastefulness in production processes. They devise efficient systems that integrate workers, machines, materials, information, and energy to make a product or provide a service.

O Industrial engineers typically do the following:
‣ Review production schedules, engineering specifications, process flows, and other information to understand methods that are applied and activities that take place in manufacturing and services
‣ Figure out how to manufacture parts or products, or deliver services, with maximum efficiency
‣ Develop management control systems to make financial planning and cost analysis more efficient
‣ Enact quality control procedures to resolve production problems or minimize costs
‣ Design control systems to coordinate activities and production planning in order to ensure that products meet quality standards
‣ Confer with clients about product specifications, vendors about purchases, management personnel about manufacturing capabilities, and staff about the status of projects
O Industrial engineers apply their skills to many different situations, from manufacturing to healthcare systems to business administration. For example, they design systems for:
‣ moving heavy parts within manufacturing plants
‣ delivering goods from a company to customers, including finding the most profitable places to locate manufacturing or processing plants
‣ evaluating job performance
‣ paying workers.

O Industrial engineers focus on how to get the work done most efficiently, balancing many factors, such as time, number of workers needed, available technology, actions workers need to take, achieving the end product with no errors, workers' safety, environmental concerns, and cost.

O Sample Projects of IEs:
‣ Designing the admissions procedure at a hospital
‣ Discovering a new way to assemble a product that will prevent worker injury
‣ Converting a major production line to JIT and kanban system
‣ Representing a company in the design and construction of a new manufacturing plant
‣ Performing motion and time studies
‣ Developing prototype units for the cellular phone car adapter market
‣ Simulation modeling
‣ Developing a hardware protection program for spacecraft
‣ Developing a supplier quality program
‣ Implementing lean manufacturing concepts
‣ Developing and launching a complete material handling system for a new automobile
‣ Developing the conceptual layout of a dockyard and ship repair maintenance facility
‣ Working on a design project to make a medical device to treat sleep apnea
‣ Representing manufacturing and purchasing issues on a design team
‣ Teaching industrial engineering courses

iv. Sub-disciplines
o Facilities Engineering & Energy Management
o Financial Engineering
o Human Factors & Safety Engineering
o Information Systems Engineering & Management
o Manufacturing Engineering
o Operations Engineering & Management
o Policy Planning
o Supply Chain Management & Logistics
o Systems Engineering
o Organization Development & Change Management
