Female miners are the latest silicosis statistic in South Africa Gold mines.
Dust control in South Africa gold mines remains inadequate according to this study. "Most miners diagnosed with pulmonary silicosis had started employment from 2003 and had worked for less than 10 years, indicating potential inadequate dust control measures in the mines even after interventions were implemented in 2003"

In Alexandra, South Africa, where two thirds of the women are abuse survivors, a group of mothers are on a mission to change the fate of their neighbourhood, right from the beginning. Through a series of intimate, and at times, uncomfortable, conversations, 1001 DAYS takes the audience on a journey. Through the chaotic and narrow streets of Alexandra, we follow the fearless and charismatic health-workers Zanele, Thandiwe and Khosi. They are three mothers from the heart of the community, who doggedly support hundreds of new mothers, during some of their happiestโand lowestโmoments. Their aim: to help new mothers during the first 1001 days of their babies' lives, which are the most critical in any humanโs life.

"ALL SHALL BE AFFORDED DIGNITY" - Let's honor this vision together.
This Human Rights day we remember the millions of miners who have died and were injured while mining for minerals and building South Africa. Just 2 months before the Sharpeville massacre, on the 21st of January 436 miners were buried underground at the Coalbrook mine south of Sharpeville. They remained entombed there until today - take that in 436 miners entombed in South Africa!. The death and injuries inflicted on miners continues today where TB and silicosis remain one of the miners' most prolific killers. Please keep them in mind today.
