Oh yeah, go Claudia! We just published this amazing review on the female uro-genital microbiome. The gut and the va**na are very different - and if you’re interested in women’s health, this paper is worth checking out.
The New Hampshire Association of Naturopathic Doctors conference is at Wentworth by the Sea this weekend. Fantastic talks by John Neustadt, Tia Trivisonno, Dick Thom, and others. I spoke about addiction on Friday and sleep, spirit & immunity Saturday. Thaena is here - the Thaena table is a popular spot to talk about sterilized f***l transplant. Love this conference.
Jeff Bland is up to his old tricks - putting together a fantastic line-up of speakers to discuss the links between clinical nutritional epigenetics and microbiome science. Super fun conference.
If you didn’t make it to the conference, go to PLMInstitute.org to find the recording. It’s definitely starting to come together - and I love how nutrition research is coming of age.
I got to catch up with Michelle Simon, Erik Lundquist, and others along with my trusty sidekick Brice Thompson.
Michael Skinner’s talk may have been most enlightening for me. He showed data that demonstrated that different environmental toxins lead to different epigenetic patterns and where we see greatest impact is in the great grandchildren - the F3 generation. Interesting to think about what was happening in my great grandparents lives and how that impacts my health today.
As we start to uncover how the microbiome impacts epigenetics and these fields overlap, we may finally grasp some causal relationships that have been baffling… As Dr Cani puts it, “In gut we trust.”
I’m giving a couple of talks at the Food as Medicine Symposium today. Fantastic opportunity to nerd out with people who are aware of the microbiome universe and want to feed it carrots and kombucha. I’m talking about the microbiome, microbial metabolites, nutrition, and the immune system. Sounds like my jam, right?
We have the privilege of working with and mentoring a brilliant and talented group of up & coming clinical scientists in the NCCIH funded BRIDG program. After two years of doing science online, we are back to in-person training retreats. If you’re wondering who is thinking about how herbs effect dementia, whether people with RA have the same microbiome as people who don’t, how acupuncture may slow aging, whether qigong can help people with MS, how acupressure may help people with cancer, and other fascinating questions, this is the group. Bring on the science!
I’ve learned a lot about binge eating disorder by conducting this study with who did the heavy lifting on this article. A big thanks to Brenna, , and Chris Bray. I hope this article sheds for light on eating disorders and the mental health issues that often go along with them. Link to the article in my bio.
Remember that the gut microbiome and women’s cycles are related. is explaining why women have loose stools with their periods. And insane GI shifts with peri-menopause! Again, the .inc conference doesn’t disappoint. Fortunately, you can get the recordings if you missed it.
.inc is hosting their fall microbiome conference today and tomorrow .mcbeth giving her passionate philosophical talk about how we evolved with microbes and making us think about how we may be doing good or harm to our own microbial ecosystems. You don’t want to go outside today anyway - too much wildfire smoke. Come join us!
Big kudos to Alexandra Vita who did the heavy lifting on this article. We discovered that particular foods are good at stimulating intestinal permeability…. Super excited to be speaking at the Thaena symposium on September 10th. I’m going to discuss the microbiome in Lyme Disease; whether we should consider EBV an endemic virus; and whether vaccines for UTIs is a good idea or not… Hope to see some of you there! Go to www.Thaena.com to register.
I’m speaking for Doctors Data today for their Wellness Wednesday - 9:30 and noon pacific. Topic: Immune Rejuvenation. Sorry for being late to post. Hope some of you can make it! Doctorsdata.com/register-for-webinars
The ND1 retreat has been at our property this weekend. They’ve been doing mud rubs and jumping in the creek, herb walks, meditating, body work, and all sorts of natural medicine. Here are some of the outdoor pics (so you can see happy faces; masks inside).
New publication with and This is a preprint. The article will be out in a special issue devoted to eating disorders. Check it out and remember that eating disorders can be about trauma and social justice. Thanks for the incredible work on this study Brenna!
Hey everyone - I twisted Cory’s arm and got you 75% off for our upcoming conference. Hope to see you there☺️

Here’s a review article that we published about complementary and Integrative therapies for Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs). You can check the paper out here: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/35203820/. Big kudos to my co-authors.
We are volunteering at the local food bank today. Mom is taking orders and donations. Brian and I are packaging apples and potatoes and delivering food to families who can’t get out.
I’m so grateful for all we have. We are one of those families that doesn’t really need more stuff for Christmas. It’s gratifying to be able to give back. And I’m grateful to Minnesota farmers who give loads of potatoes and apples to people who couldn’t afford them.
As New Years approaches and you’re making resolutions, maybe considering what you can do to help end hunger could be part of it. Happy Holidays everyone!
The brilliant Andrea McBeth is speaking at the Thaena Microbiome Conference reminding us how important our microbes are and how little we do to protect them.
