Sharon's Living room Makeover - Little details!

Photos from Ebony - Interior Design & Aesthetics's post 27/04/2021

This is one of the projects we took up during the Phase 1 Lockdown and finished it successfully. Sharon is a close friend of mine and has moved into a lovely apartment. Being a working mom that she is, she found it difficult to set up her living room and was using it at her convenience.

When Sharon approached me for her Living Room makeover, I was excited. The space looked so cool, and had room to do so much. We quickly took her requirements and got to work.

She needed a three seater, two ottomons for the Living area with a nice Rug and Comfortable cushions. A contemporary Coffee Table with wooden flower vase keeping in mind of the kid. A TV Unit that would fit in the niche and we have concealed the wires which were an eyesore matching to the wall color. Floor length double curtains in the contrasting colors. A comfortable seat for the Love Birds too! We added some stools to hold tiny things like photo frames, poutporri and flower vases. Some more decor included some wall paintings, mirror and more vases!

Check out the pictures and let us know what you think :)

Design concept :-
This is something we love doing! Design concepts gives us a better understanding and help us visualise what a potential space could be like. It helps us use the space to the max.
This space was designed based on 5 key points/features:
• A 1BHK get away home.
• The theme for the entire house was industrial/modern which incorporated a lot of wood and metal with grey, blue, creams and white for the color scheme.
• An open floor plan.
• Large windows to let in natural light.
• The bedroom was to be as minimal as possible with a large platform for the bed to be placed on top of.

Lighting is an important aspect of an interior space because a well lit room can completely transform the look of a space for the better.

Albert Hadley once said, “Design is defined by light and shade, and appropriate lighting is enormously important.”
Today we are going to discuss three different types of lighting and how they can be used effectively.

1. Ambient or General Lighting
2. Task Lighting
3. Accent lighting

Ambient or General Lighting: Is the basic foundation of a lighting scheme. It provides a soft uniform glow over the entire room and illuminates a space for functionality rather than for aesthetic reasons, without causing a harsh glare. When used correctly, ambient light can create a relaxed environment from an overly stressful day.
Lights like Chandeliers, Pendants lights, Tracks or Ceiling lights are best to create Ambient Light.

Task Lighting: - As the name suggests, it is any light source used for a particular task such as reading or cooking. By nature, these lights are a lot brighter and help you see things more in detail as you work.
Lights like a Swing arm or Balanced- arm Lamp, Vanity lights, Under cabinets spotlights, Long and low pendant lights.

Accent Lighting: - This type of lighting creates a very sophisticated atmosphere, yet is very practical and functional. Accent lights are usually used to highlight a particular feature in a room, like artwork, sculptures or objects in a cabinet.
Lights like Wall lights, Recessed lights and Track lights are commonly used for accent lights.

Post No 5- Sustainable products in Interior Design (The Wednesday series)
This is the final post in this series, yet never the final for the ideas and information. We’ll keep posting later if we find anything else related.
What about the Walls and Floors?
They can be designed from natural materials like wood, natural stone for flooring and Organic paints and Fabric wallpapers for walls.

Be considerate about what you throw away. We can revamp and reuse the old furniture or objects or simply donate them too. Recycled furniture is cool and Chic.

There’s nothing like a plant in a room. It certainly gives you the sense of bringing the outside in and it makes the room feel fresh and more alive.
Nowadays, plants in modern interior design is a lot more popular. Not only making spaces more appealing and alive, they also play a role in your overall health.
Indoor plants can be used as accent pieces, to soften areas, filling up awkward empty spaces or even to create a certain expression.

Post No 3 - Sustainable products in Interior Design (The Wednesday series)
Avoid Plastic and other synthetic materials: A difficult choice for sure, but it is reasonably best to bid a goodbye to synthetic materials such as plastic or PVC. This practice has already started in the public and is getting bigger every day. Go for natural materials such as wood, stone and bamboo. They also give your space a warm and cosy look.

As promised here is our second post in the Wednesday series about Sustainable products in Interior Design!

Energy Efficiency - This is one of the easiest and most cost-effective ways to fight climate change within our limitations.

Usage of large windows that allows more light, breeze, and pure air would result in turning the interior spaces appear brighter and welcoming.

LED light bulbs use approximately 85% less energy than the regular incandescent light bulbs and 40% less energy than fluorescent(yellow) lights. Switch to them in your fixtures like floor and table lamps too.

Using a low-flow showerhead can save up to two gallons of water for every three or four that a traditional showerhead uses. Choose wisely!.

To design any interior space, the most important thing after you finish the desired layout is deciding on the color palette for the space. The colors you pick for your room decide the mood of the space and the colors speaks volumes.
We are highly inspired by nature and try to imbibe it on our color palettes coz what’s more beautiful than a perfectly designed scene painted by the nature?
Here are few color palettes that we have derived from some our favourite scenery. Hope you like them!

It's so important to be able to have a visual description/idea for a space. It is one of the most vital parts of designing

This is one of our favourite things do to. To be able to play around with different furniture layouts, to see what furniture complements eachother and introducing different textures and textiles.

Here we've gone for a Modern Scandinavian theme with hints of Mid-century modern furniture for a living room using Wood, Cane, leather, marble and linen.

We all know the phrase 'Less is more' and Scandinavian design is a perfect example of that. It focuses on clean, simple lines, minimalism and functionality without sacrificing beauty.

Sustainable products in Interior Design:

It might seem like a fancy trend to "go Eco Friendly", but it is time we all realize the need to do our part to save our planet. As interior designers, our aim/goal is to use as many environment friendly products as we can in your homes.

We will be doing a series of posts every Wednesday explaining how sustainability can be incorporated in various elements in a house.

Picking a color is not only about finding the right tints, tones or shades, but is also about choosing a paint without toxic substances and volatile organic compounds.

Keep an eye out for more in the coming Wednesdays!

We thought we'd start the week of with a small tip

Curtains can make or break a room. You can opt to layer your fabric using sheer and blackout curtains, to create a lavish looking frame for your windows.
"One common mistake with curtains is to hang them just above the top of the window frame, making the window – and the room – feel squat. Hang them high to create a grand impression and make the room feel taller"

Our take on a balcony makeover on a budget.
This quaint little space definitely needed a little personality to it. We knew the client loved gardening as she had a large corner for her planters and that she would like to add more. A swing was placed in the centre of the balcony which took up quite a lot of space and left no room to move around. We noticed that there was an empty wall on the left-hand corner, that itched for something.
So, during our visualisation period we came up with three ideas to act as an accent feature for the wall.
Option 1. Using Bamboo ladders to create an exaggerated feel for the wall
Option 2. Using cinder blocks and wood to create a pyramid to hold more plants.
Option 3. A small trellis accent with a money plant to creep.
We decided to convert the existing plant-holder into a counter which would be accompanied with two bar stools. The pale brown floor definitely needed to be quirked up a bit. To add greener colour to the space, we decided to add an artificial grass turf on top of the pre-existing flooring.

This is one of our favourite parts of interior décor. According to us, an accent wall is a must for a living space or a bedroom because it is the differently highlighted wall of a room which defines the character of the room. It can be designed to have a predominant color or print that is coherent with the rest of the color scheme of a designed space.
