Did you know that by using bigger plates, we’re subconsciously teaching ourselves that we need more food on the plate simply because we feel the need to fill it?

It’s easy to cut back on portion sizes by starting with a smaller plate and automatically filling at least half with fruits or vegetables.

You can also measure portion sizes anywhere you go by bringing measuring cups with you or by learning how to portion size by eye (though, this takes LOTS of practice!).

Don’t be embarrassed to eat less. You can still enjoy a full meal with friends and family, just eat a little slower! (Plus you’ll get bragging rights as you lose a few pants sizes!)

Cooking shows are great for teaching a variety of recipes but they also tend to overwhelm people with techniques, side-dishes, and other things to remember.

I want to remind you NOT to be overwhelmed! In fact, I encourage you to find one healthy recipe this week (either online or in a cookbook) and do your best to enjoy not only preparing it, but eating it as well!

Cooking at home more and more often will help lay a strong foundation of healthy eating, portion control, ingredient knowledge, and weight management. (Kids will also enjoy being helpful in the kitchen!)

It’s truly a win-win to dedicate a few minutes a day to create a meal you know you’ll enjoy!

Pack your snacks, and eat them, too!

Items like low-fat yogurt, whole-grain crackers, fresh fruits and vegetables, and small handfuls of nuts make perfect snack options to help curb hunger to avoid overeating during the next meal.

While the amount of snacks varies person-to-person (due to their recommended calorie range), most people can afford 2-3 healthy snacks between meals.

We buy unsalted raw nuts in the bulk produce bins and then pack them in snack size ziplock baggies. Perfect snack for the drive home from work.

Many people across the globe find it difficult to dine out when watching their weight and nothing is more deflating than arriving at a restaurant to find out that there is really no ideal menu item for you to choose from.

Thankfully this can be avoided with a few minutes of homework beforehand as most eateries have websites with menu’s available online which makes it easy to count calories before you even leave the house.

The additional benefit of looking at the menu online is that you won’t even need to look at it in the restaurant! (You also won’t accidently see the dessert page, so temptations are also avoided.)

Geno and I used to go to a restaurant and TELL the waitress that if she brought bread to the table we would reduce her tip. She would laugh thinking we were joking but she wouldn't bring the bread. She would then get a nice tip!

A healthy diet should be full of colors like those of fresh produce!

The best part about locally sourced fruits and vegetables is knowing how they were grown, when they were picked, and how you can get more! (If you don’t have a farmer’s market, knowing a few neighbors with green thumbs will go a LONG way!)

Of course, it doesn’t hurt to add some exotic options to your diet when you’re feeling a bit adventurous!

With being more than 60% water, it’s no surprise that our bodies desperately need it to survive! But do you know just how much water is recommended for ideal health?

Eight cups of water is the magic number, and although it may seem like a lot, simply replacing the caloric drinks in your diet and keeping a water bottle with you will make eight cups seem like a breeze.

A sip here, a sip there… before you know it, you’ve trained yourself to reach for your water bottle instead of the soda!

This is one of the huge ways Valentus drinks have changed my life. My Diet Coke addiction is GONE!!!

Between a hovering boss, endless phone calls, and strict deadlines, it’s no wonder many employees find temporary happiness in a fast-food “comfort” meal Monday through Friday!

Wherever their lunch destination takes them (and however many calories consumed it costs them), they find solace simply being away from their desk… but it doesn’t have to be this way!

You could enjoy a perfectly healthy and uplifting meal away from your desk, too… just pack it yourself!

A whole grain sandwich, your favorite fruit, and a serving of delicious veggies is a perfectly nutritious meal that takes less than a few minutes to prepare the night before.

(You could even write a note to yourself where you’d like to enjoy it such as the park, with a co-worker, etc., or even a little reminder to relax and enjoy the little things!)

Have you ever sat down with a full bag of chips and promised yourself you’d only eat a little bit, only to discover that the bag was now empty at the end of your show?

This is what we call “mindless eating,” and it’s a habit nearly all of us face at one time or another.

The trick is to keep your mind on your food so you can track how much you’re eating and allow yourself to feel full faster.

However, if you still want to watch your show or if you REALLY need to send those emails, try bringing only a single serving size over to your desk with you (instead of the whole bag of chips or whole tub of ice cream).

According to a recent study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, Americans drink 400 calories on a daily basis. (Yes, you heard that correctly, DRINK!)

I get it... after a long, stressful day comfort foods and activities become second nature.

We graze, pick, and share not-so-healthy snacks as we engage in not so physical activities.

It’s time to break that habit! Even eating dinner while watching TV is not a good idea. Let yourself get into what you’re eating, not what you’re watching! Engage in a conversation with a friend or spouse, ask yourself how you could have prepared your meal better, and put the fork down between every bite to give yourself time to really chew your food and engage digestion.

If you know for certain that come 7 or 8PM you’ll be ready for a snack, pre-sort out a healthy serving of almonds, fruits, or vegetables. (By planning ahead, you’re less likely to act on impulse later!)

By ditching the bleached white bread, over processed pasta, and refined sugars in soda and cereal, you’re making the conscious choice to fill up on something that does the body good besides just filling it up.

Remember not all carbohydrates are bad, some are simply better for you than others!

There are plenty of ways, times, and reasons to get creative with your fruit and vegetable intake!

You’re probably already aware, but fruits and veggies are filled with vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and phytonutrients that you can't find anywhere else. What you may not know is that these same fruits and vegetables that we eat today generally have less nutrients in them then they did decades ago.

I won’t go into the science of it all, but what you need to realize is that it may take a few extra bites of your favorite fruits and veggies to get the same amount of vitamins and minerals that your great grandparents consumed.

Try them fresh from the farmer’s market, dipped in a low calorie condiment (like hot sauce), on top of your favorite dish, blended into a smoothie, or even frozen!

We love slicing up an apple and tossing it in cinnamon. Yummy! My students even ask when I am going to bring in more apples and cinnamon.

It’s a shame that so many people skip the most important meal of the day… breakfast!

WHAT DID YOU EAT THIS MORNING?

Eating within 30 minutes of waking up triggers your metabolism to start burning calories so eating before your shower or starting your pot of coffee is ideal.

Just be careful to make wise breakfast choices when you’re half awake! Many commercially prepared breakfast foods (like bacon, sausage, and waffles) are high in sugar, fat, and carbohydrates.

You’re best sticking with a revitalizing fruit smoothie, bowl of overnight oatmeal, and/or fresh eggs or yogurt to start your morning with the energy you need for a satisfyingly productive day!
