Looking for the ultimate relaxing getaway? Check out our wonderful friends’ (Birgitte and John’s) amazing Airbnb property, Seal House!

In Lubec, the stunning easternmost town of the USA (in the state of Maine), you couldn’t get further from home in Oz…your crazy busy life can’t follow you to this remote slice of paradise!!

There are two properties to select from:
Saelhuset (Seal House in Danish) the main 2-storey house with its wonderful eclectic and authentic Lubec charm which features 3 bedrooms or the glamorous ‘Tiny House’ with its luxurious white-theme featuring a super cool Murphy bed and the most fabulous kitchen (white Smeg everywhere!).

And the view is SPECTACULAR with magnificent nightly sunsets over Johnson’s Bay. And you can pop over to Canada for lunch as the border is only 5 mins from your door!!

Summer in Maine, the way life should be. One of our best weeks of the summer was our trip in Down East to explore Lubec, Easport and Campobello Island. This year I had three weekends blocked off from weddings, and although it's hard to say no to amazing couples, it was incredibly special to be able to enjoy a real summer weekend with my family. Thanks for hosting us, I still dream of slow mornings here!

Calm before the storm. Getting ready for high winds tomorrow . Tucked all the Adirondack furniture down etc. We’ve barely had any snow so far this season and grateful that the impending Arctic blast won’t be reaching Lubec.

Today was a high of 38 degrees and tomorrow is supposed to be a high of 52 degrees.

The luxury Tiny House has a full-size Murphy bed made in Italy by Expand furniture. High-quality linens by Ralph Lauren: organic cotton 624-thread count Sateen Border hemstitched. Prima Loft down-alternative comforter with Ralph Lauren argyle coverlet and matching shams keep you warm and cozy on those cool Fall nights. Reading lamps are provided on both sides of the bed along with phone chargers ready for use. An authentic nautical map of the area hangs above the bed to add to the atmosphere. Eighteen windows in The Tiny House allows you to observe the spectacular nature around you in luxurious comfort.

The best part about spending time in a 100-plus year-old home is admiring all of the charming quirks, character, artistic touches, and artwork to follow the natural feeling of the house. Cute doorways, a glass paneled painted door, one-of-kind wooden blue staircase are just the start that make us appreciate the craftsmanship of our Maine bay view cottage built in 1920 by John Trecartin, the same builder of the Roosevelt Cottage on Campobello Island, NB. Interestingly enough the house was originally constructed in Canada and moved to Lubec. Think of all the stories this home holds such as the first local resident George Wright in the 1930’s to owner Ollie Blake with his famous local cable musical variety show called "Ollie's Kitchen."

While staying at Seal House Maine you can use either one of our two pianos. We’re especially proud of the upright Monochord piano, built for small apartments in occupied Japan in the years after WWII. It has 64 keys instead of 88. An antique stool is provided to play in comfort. The electric piano is a Yamaha with bench included. The Monochord was just tuned and is ready for attention! Two vintage music sheet books are kept on the Yamaha in case you want to tickle some ivories or check out some piano music books in our music book collection.

One of Maine’s mottos is “The Way Life Should Be” and in our opinion it’s easy to see why! Seeing wildlife at your doorstep is a special experience unlike any other. Venture on a hike and you may be very surprised at what you could see. Here is a taste of the beautiful animals and nature that exist in Lubec. We love to explore what this region has to offer and capture special moments like these! Seal House or the Tiny House is the ideal starting point to begin a wildlife adventure. After a long day out on the trails returning to home base is the best way to recuperate.

Our primary bedroom with queen-sized bed at Seal House, The Captain's Quarters is awaiting your arrival! Our side entry at Seal House greets you immediately with positive bright energy. Enter into the mudroom where you can store any belongings or sit at the white foldable table enjoying the majestic views of Johnson Bay. Beautiful red, white, and blue-themed decor as well as an eclectic maritime art and furniture collection makes this room unique and memorable. Binoculars are hanging on the whale tail hooks along with large-sized LL. Bean tote bags. A collection of warm Pendleton and Icelandic wool blankets are kept in the wire basket for fireside! Perfect room for enjoying your breakfast or for a digital nomad.

The Whale Room is a loved space and unlike any other room in Seal House Maine. Downeast nostalgia and details throughout including a full and twin-size antique wrought-irons beds, whale-themed artwork, the original built-in closet, old desks, trunk for extra storage, white terry-cloth robes, and classic bedding. Our working vintage-style Royal Classic manual typewriter is fully-functional to take a trip down memory lane. Learn about the different types of whales by diving deep in the wall art or pick up a whale book on either of the two book shelves. White terry-cloth robes are provided in all of our bedrooms. Sink into pure comfort and relaxation when staying in the Whale Room. Say hi to the plush right whale and narwhal!

Remote work is the new normal nowadays and we’re prepared to make it as easy as possible to work on vacation at Seal House and the Tiny House. Both of our properties have several quality spaces for our digital nomads who stay with us.

The mudroom at Seal House Maine is ideal to use as an office during the day. Glance out the large picture window which looks out onto majestic Johnson Bay. It is the perfect balance of work and play! Another great option is the antique desk in the Captain’s Quarters with cushioned 100-plus year old rolling desk chair for a retro vibe. The Whale Room has two desks one of which has a working antique-style Royal typewriter. The living room Expand furniture coffee table with two lift tops also is an option for work especially with the comfort of our large leather sofa.

Part of Seal House's uniqueness as a rental property stems from our vast collection of instruments! Included in the Seal House Music Room is a Madeira acoustic guitar, Fender Stratacaster guitar, Martin backpack guitar, Concerter banjo, wooden flutes, dulcimer instrument, tambourine, vibra slap, harmonicas, and harmonica neck rack. Guests have access to use all the instruments to create a mini-concert of your own! The room is filled with music posters from The Filmore East among other iconic music venues. Don’t forget the party lights, record player, and JBL Extreme 2 speaker! Turn on the large disco ball to really set the mood for a fabulous evening of grooving!

Seal House is located on a bald eagle flight path and as of late we have been seeing them several times a day! Multiple pairs of quality binoculars are provided in our luxury Tiny House as well as in our Seal House bay view cottage for bird and wildlife watching! We have two bird feeders on the property for entertainment. Scout around Johnson Bay to search for animal species, birds overhead, or boats in the bay. You never know what you’ll see Downeast! ​​​​​​​​
