Ethan Callahan sat in the corner booth of the only pub in Chestlewood, nursing a pint of cider. He’d been sitting there the best part of an hour, trying to come up with a reason to knock on Jessica Bancroft’s door when she suddenly walked into the pub. Ethan was not the type of guy to get nervous, in any situation, but seeing his mate for the first time sent a thrill of excitement through him that he hadn’t expected.
She ordered her drink at the bar, cast a cursory glance in his direction, and headed toward the beer garden. Ethan took a gulp of warm cider, winced at its sour taste, and plonked the glass heavily on the table, drawing attention from the barmaid who’d been hovering around him since his arrival. Jessica was not what he’d imagined. As the daughter of the infamous Neriah Bancroft he had expected … he searched for the right word and finally settled with just more. She had a look of her mother around the nose and mouth, but that was where the similarities ended. Of course, he’d only seen Neriah in pictures, and even they were faded and old, so his comparison was perhaps a little off.

One thing I like to write about is strong female characters, and with Mother's Day coming up here in New Zealand, it's the perfect time to read fiction based on strong women.
