If you sleep on vintage Japanese drums, you better wake up quick. The blue sparkle kick and toms here needed a little bit of work to get them up to snuff, but still cost way way less than if I’d bought a vintage Ludwig or Slingerland kit. This particular shell pack is a 20-12-16 and it’s paired with a 6.5” Black Beauty. The kick and toms are made out of a mahogany variant (luan/lauan) with poplar centers and the same solid reinforcement rings you’d find in the American drums of the same period. What’s cool about these over the American drums is that the wraps were much thinner (presumably to keep price point down), the bass drum hoops are lighter in weight, and the drums often have less lugs per drum. Check out how the 16” floor tom here only as six lugs a side (when an American 16” floor tom would have eight). This all brings the mass of the drums down, so they’re way easy on your back when you’re loading in and out on a gig. Less lugs per drum also means you’re opening up the sound of that drum and letting the shell do more work in creating the tone than the head. I think that yields a more personalized drum tone because every single drum is different. So, I guess it’s all to say – When you see a 50, 100, 200 dollar vintage MIJ drum kit, think twice about it next time. And if y’all are curious about the music bed, it’s “Winds” by Pat Carroll!
This is from a few years ago. I was really sick at this point and could play drums a few times a month if I was lucky. It's tough to think about this stuff still, but I'm glad I had some creative output during this time of my life. Hope y'all dig it.
