I have always enjoyed fruit smoothies, but never considered adding greens and other veggies to up the ante. I have to admit that at first, it really didn't sound too appealing. However, from the very first day that I added some fresh baby spinach to my banana, soy milk, and frozen strawberries, I was utterly hooked! It tasted wonderful and I noticed the positive side effects immediately. They helped to reduce cravings for sweets and aided in my digestion and elimination. (Sorry to have to bring up that topic so quickly, but without healthy elimination of wastes, we are bound-literally speaking-to be unhealthy and unhappy).

On gelling: If your smoothie is gelling, perhaps you added chia or flax seeds too far in advance. Blueberries, which are very high in natural pectin, are also a culprit of jelly-like smoothies. A re-blend with a little bit of ice and some creamy liquid (if appropriate for the flavor profiles) will likely do the trick.

You are drinking it too fast: As it is a meal rather than a drink, I usually suggest drinking it slowly and 'chewing' the smoothie to prepare your body for the food which pre-digests it. If you down it too quickly it can be too much for the body.

The great thing about smoothies with plenty of leafy greens in them is that they are a great source of fibre. Why? Greens contain insoluble fibre that add bulk to your p**p, and soluble fibre that feeds the good bacteria in your gut.
