Follow us to keep up to date on the happenings within the WPHS Agriculture Program!

Fun Farm Fact: It's International . We celebrate our young men and women who study agriculture in middle and high school and college. They are future farmers, veterinarians, ag teachers, biochemists, and so much more!

We are absolutely thrilled for this budding partnership! These kids do amazing work and what better way to learn than by doing!

Check out the Public Market in downtown Wheeling for our tomatoes and peppers and soon to be eggs!!!

14/11/2023

Eggs are now available in the Wheeling Park High School Store for faculty only until our girls ramp up production!

Keep an eye out for more products coming in the future!

It’s an exciting time to be in WPHS Agriculture!!!

25/10/2023

Our first marketable dozen! The girls are still working out some kinks in the process and others are just being lazy still…but in reality egg production is correlated to the length of light in a day. Since these are all going to be new layers, it is entirely possible that these girls might not all lay until the light gets longer again. However, we can look into some artificial light to hopefully promote egg production in the winter months!

Our first dozen eggs from our Agriculture program!! We hope to be selling these in the Overlook soon.
Love our chicks! ❤️🐥💙

07/10/2023

We are so egg-cited to announce our very first egg has arrived!

It is not uncommon for the eggs from new layers to be on the smaller side like this one is!

The hen that laid this egg is a Blue Rock, and we have three of this breed. So hopefully the other two will start laying tomorrow! We will do a breed spotlight on them tomorrow!

We are trying something new this fall!

In the block (2 period) Horticulture class, we have designed it to be a classroom and lab type setting! In the classroom we are learning the meat and potatoes of the plants and then in the lab we are growing some vegetables in the greenhouse!

These pictures are of our 85 cucumber 🥒 plants and their development!!!

It’s and our Science of Ag class has spent the last month working on our chicken coop and getting the outdoor chicken run ready for the girls!

Today was the first full day that all the girls were able to be out in the run! We have 25 pullets consisting of seven different breeds! We are expecting eggs at almost anytime from these ladies and will be selling them at the school and other locations!

Check out some of the pictures of our girls!

The breeds are:

Americana
Olive Eggers
Welsummer
Noir Moran
Golden Laced Wyandotte
Blue Rock
Speckled Sussex

Throughout this endeavor, students will learn basic animal husbandry skills, business skills and the FFA students will be able to practice for their fall poultry CDE! Not to mention we plan on collaborating with several other CTE programs in the fall! But for now we are content with their cuteness!

Keep an eye on these ladies are they grow and watch how they develop their feathers and different patterns. Right now we are hard pressed to tell some of them apart 😅

And we could use some names! The punnier the better as Mr. Bloomfield says!

We took a field trip today to tour the WVU Davis College of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Design!!!

Ten students from Mr. Bloomfield’s classes and four from the WPHS Green Club with Ms. Hempelmann along with three chaperones went and were able to see the WVU Greenhouse, Natural History Museum, and tour the WVU Animal Science Farm!!

We also were able to have lunch with three Animal Science professors. Dr. Dailey, Dr. Minch, and Dr. Bowdridge explained the versatility of this major and how it can be used to prepare someone for a variety of careers!

A special guest, Ryder, the service dog, was also in attendance for lunch!

A big thank you to WVU, the greenhouse managers, the animal science farm manager, and recruiter, Lauren Johnston for setting everything up for us!

The Spotted Lanternfly is an invasive species that has no natural predator in our area! Do whatever you can to prevent and report the sightings of these insects!

This week's weather is warming up! Get outside and hunt Spotted Lanternfly egg masses. When you find them crush them! Use an old bank card, small rolling pin or putty knife.

Come visit our students and learn about our ag program!!!

Students and staff members at Wheeling Park High School want potential students and their parents to See What It’s All About!!!

All About Park and the Wheeling Park High School CTE Open House will be held from 5-8 p.m. on Feb. 23 at Wheeling Park High School. Students with last names beginning with A-L are invited to attend from 5-6:30 p.m., and students with last names beginning with M-Z are invited to attend 6:30-8 p.m. All About Park and the CTE Open House provide an opportunity for Ohio County Schools eighth graders, private and parochial school students and parents to see the amazing opportunities available to students of Wheeling Park High School. Park’s excellent academic, career and technical, fine and performing arts programs and athletic and extracurricular events will be on display during the event.

The expansive new Innovative Learning Center will also be on display for incoming and potential students. The ILC was unveiled on Jan. 23, and it features collaborative spaces that include makerspaces and flexible seating with the goal of blending academic and 21st century skills in an environment that promotes creativity, collaboration and communication. The ILC at Wheeling Park is the culmination of innovation projects that began in the school system’s elementary schools and continued into the middle schools. All of the skills that students learned in the lower grades can now be utilized by students in the ILC at Wheeling Park High School.

Principal Meredith Dailer said All About Park and the CTE Open House is an exciting introduction into the exceptional opportunities available to students of Wheeling Park High School.

“Wheeling Park High is where students discover their passion,” she said. “The new Innovative Learning Center is another example of how Park continues to expand to meet the need of its students. We’re proud of what we have to offer our students, and we want families and the community to see it firsthand. There’s something for everyone at Wheeling Park High School. We provide our students with the best programs in West Virginia.”

All About Park is held in conjunction with “Career and Technical Education Month.” Park’s career and tech students will be giving demonstrations in the their simulated workplaces during the event. If you have any questions regarding the event, contact Ohio County Schools Communications Coordinator Gabe Wells at 304-243-0493.
