But be responsible. If you are new to breeding and calving, find a breeder who can be your mentor. Breed quality stock so you can be a good breeder, not someone who breeds calves that will end up standard size.

Mini highlands are not a breed. To become a breed, there must be consistency in calf crop and they must be reliably different than standard highlands. To create the foundation of a new breed, foundation stock should be free of physical and genetic disease.

This developing breed is desperately in need of people who will be caretakers. There are too many people putting profit above creating a healthy solid foundation for the breed. At this point in the breed development, this could easily be a death knell for this beloved breed.

Pet only, no Breeding?
Some people tell us they just want one mini highland as a pet.
Cattle are herd animals. They need to be kept with their own kind or they can end up with serious behavior problems. It would also be a sad and lonely life to live without contact with your own kind.

If you just want a pet but now decide to do right by the animal and have 2… realize that once heifers hit puberty, they will cycle every 18-20 days for life. During this time, they may become wanderlust, looking for a bull and can mount each other. If over socialized, they can try to mount people, especially children.

You are better off getting a couple of bull calves and castrating them to make them into steers. But males will be bigger than females with the same genetic background.

So you want small and need to have 2. At this point, you should think about breeding. Cows are happiest as moms. They are settled and content. They are better behaved and calmer and more docile when they are not cycling every 20 days.

But be responsible. If you are new to breeding and calving, find a breeder who can be your mentor. Breed quality stock so you can be a good breeder, not someone who breeds calves that will end up standard size.
