Armed with slick PR and fanciful claims, incinerator companies are once again trying to sell "waste-to-energy" as the magical solution to our the mountains of waste in Aotearoa. Listening to them you could certainly be momentarily lulled into thinking these were are good idea. "They have them in Europe," they tell you. So they must be good right? WRONG. Incinerators don't solve any waste problem - they create a market for waste so we are incentivised to create more waste. The toxic ash they create still has to go to a landfill, so they don't get rid of that problem. They spew out the most deadly emissions ever created - dioxins, furans & other "forever chemicals" that go in our air, water, soil and our bodies. And that doesn't even cover their massive contribution to climate change which is worse than a coal-fired power plant - this is why Europe is actually now moving away from incineration. These facilities all want to burn plastics because of their high energy value - of course, that is because they are just fossil fuels that spent a short life as a plastic object. What these incinerator proposals do is to shut down real community & structural solutions to waste - starting with waste minimisation. These will deliver the economic and environmental outcomes that are good for everyone (except the incinerator companies). Don't be fooled by the hype. Regenerate DON'T Incinerate Aotearoa!
