Tiffany Getz - Painting Blind

Tiffany Getz - Painting Blind

The work of Tiffany Getz, a low vision painter.

This is such a difficult piece to capture in a photo. The entire painting is metallic, and the colors shift and play with the tiniest twitch of your head. I have got to figure out how to photograph this paint better, it’s a blast to paint with!

The video mentioned in the previous post, because Facebook can’t handle a video and a photo in the same post. 🙄😂

This was a beautifully satisfying painting. My health had kept me from my knives and brushes for a couple of weeks, so I was itching to just slather a bunch of paint and medium all over. I decided to try for a tie-dye look, and love how that turned out!

This was also my first good painting video. The recording and editing process has been another fun part of the art journey God has me on!

Another trip to the beach, on a new size! It was rather surprising how much an extra inch one way and two less in another changes the painting experience. I love how the square version turned out, but I enjoy the painting of beaches more on rectangular canvases.

This piece was a fun combination of techniques from my color explosion paintings and my previous sunsets. It has so much energy to it!

Last, but certainly not least of this set of prints: a blacklight explosion! Neon paint photographs too awesomely under blacklight, it had to be shared.

Like the other explosions, I got my test print in the metallic finish...and WOW! It almost looks like it’s actually glowing! If I can figure out a good spot to put it, I’m going to order another metallic photographic print, in a bigger size!

This piece was an interesting lesson in how my eyes and brain process colors. Unlike my previous bright colors on black, the dark colors on white made me much more aware of the background. This resulted in my inner perfectionist fussing with the streaking of colors. The finished piece isn’t as different as I thought it would be, but I am quite pleased with it. 🙂

Like the first explosion, when ordering my test print from Redbubble, I had them print this with metallic finish. Though it lacks the texture of the original painting, the shimmer of the print is so pretty that it’s a very close second!

This was the first of my “explosions”. Streaking the colors through a thick layer of black did not turn out quite how I expected...but that’s ok, because it still turned out to be one of my most exciting paintings yet! The Lord keeps giving me very happy painting accidents like this when I’m trying to do new things. Thank you, Lord! 😀

I painted this for my mother, with a great deal of input from her in the process.

Due to my multiple disabilities, Mom provides a great deal of care for me. She doesn’t stop at the basics; she does what she can to help me do the things I am able to enjoy, including painting! I do the actual painting, but I need a hand with setup, cleanup, and the occasional “paint all over the painter” incident.

Mom always has observations about my paintings, too — it’s great to get a second perspective at the end of a painting session, since my limited vision means I don’t see all the things she notices. I find out what I’ve painted when I can blow up a photo after things dry, and miss some things even them.

My first “good” painting was an ocean, and I’ve done a few more since. Mom has especially loved these, as she is a Florida girl, so I decided to paint her one using different techniques and details that she has especially liked about my art. I gave her choices about things along the way, too, like how big she wanted the beach to be. We both have special memories tied up in this piece now!

The shells were a special addition — they’re real, not painted. I don’t normally include things like that in my art, but Mom and I both thought of them while considering what to put on the very large beach. They had to happen. A bit of God’s art included in a piece of mine! 🙂

This piece was an exercise in patience. To keep the very 3D elements separate from each other, I had to add just a bit at a time before allowing things to dry. One session for the trunks and branches, followed by three rounds of leaves, made this piece slower than many more complex paintings. It was worth the time, though!

These happy trees print just as bright and cheery as the original. A fun way to perk up a dull spot!

Sorry it’s been so long since I posted an update to this Page! Life got in the way of the next round of test prints being ordered a few times, and I will not make new prints available until I make sure (with Mom’s visual assistance) that the image prints up as nicely as I want it to. Only the best for you all!

Thankfully, the next 5 test prints arrived today, and I will be posting the images here and making them available on Redbubble over the next few days! I apologize for being too slow for Christmas printing these next 5 pieces.

The test prints for the third sunset and the pink flower arrived today. They look fantastic! The flower is so happy! 😀

I will be keeping this Page up-to-date with print availability and the occasional available original painting. Prints will not be available immediately for new paintings, as I will be keeping my standards for prints very high! I will work with photos until both I and my sighted mother are satisfied with their printing true to the original painting at home, then will order a test print from Redbubble to ensure that the final print satisfies us both. You won’t be able to order any print that does not meet very high standards!

I will still be sharing new paintings on my personal page; if you just want to see what I’m up to, you don’t have to sift through the print posts here. I don’t want anyone to feel spammed! 💖

Original painting details: 9”x12” acrylic paint on stretched canvas.

This was a modification of the streaking method I developed with my third sunset. It was too fun not to use again!

My third impasto sunset. This is my favorite sky! It was actually a bit of a mistake that God helped me turn into something even better. I failed to properly recreate a technique I’d watched a tutorial for, but the way the colors were streaming together looked good even with my low vision...so I kept going, and love the result!

The third version of my first “special” painting. I love this piece, and keep repeating it to apply new lessons I’ve learned.

I was born with neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2), a genetic disorder that causes benign tumors to grow on nerve cells, mostly on/in the brain or spine. Damage from these tumors has caused me various issues, including deafness and left hand paralysis.

My NF2 causes legal blindness in my right eye before birth, due to a retinal defect that allows me only peripheral vision. Then I became wholly low vision in May of 2015, when a btainstem tumor took all the vision in my left eye besides a small area of peripheral vision (which has further dwindled since late 2020). I’ve got zero central vision now.

I've always loved creative pursuits, but my vision loss cut my creative outlets dramatically.

Then, in July 2020, I decided to find out if I could paint anything recognizable. I discovered God had given me a very unexpected skill! In just a few weeks I was able to apply many lessons learned in past pursuits to the creation of textured, colorful paintings that were more than just “good for a blind girl”!

The whole process has been fascinating. With my limited vision, I cannot see the finer details of my work while I’m painting. Thankfully, God gave me 30 years of learning about things like color and texture! I’ve got a solid enough idea of what I want to do and how I plan to do it that seeing only the larger details still allows me to paint...and it’s fun taking photos afterwards to zoom in and see how things turned out!

God has helped me continue to improve my painting skills, and He continues to surprise me with ever-improving ability! God is awesome, and being the blind painter is a blast. 😀
