Refurbishing an 1800's Victorian Door that has been abused, left outside for years, is out of square

Not quite sure what the purpose of this piece of hardware was for. Beneath it was a hole that went through the door, but it had been plugged and nothing was on the other side. Was not a deadbolt or anything like that. Looks to be original to the door though. Open to any suggestions anyone might have as to what it might have been.
